AskPat 999 Episode Transcript
Pat Flynn: Hey, what's up everybody? Pat Flynn here, and welcome to Episode 999. We are one episode away from an important announcement in Episode 1000.
It's going to determine the whole future of this podcast, which yes, will continue, so don't worry, I'm not just ending it. But that announcement's going to happen in the next episode, so if you aren't subscribed yet, subscribe now because we've got some great stuff coming, and again, I'll talk about that more in Episode 1000 next Monday. But for right now we're going to answer Jackie's question here, because it's a great one, and I know it's one that many of you are facing right now too, so here we go, this is Jackie.
Now, here's today's question from Jackie.
Jackie: Hey Pat, this is Jackie Bolen from JackieBolen.com, and I'd like your advice. I'm at a bit of a crossroads right now. My full-time day job is ending in the middle of November, so that's in about a month and a half from now, and I am just considering going full-time in the online business world, or my other option is to look for some sort of other day job. I'm making enough money in the online business thing that I could pay all my bills each month, but I don't really have enough for more than that, so what's stopping me is fear, I guess. I feel like the online thing is profitable, and if I did it full-time I actually could make more money. It's just fear. Am I good enough? Do I know enough? It's so competitive. Do I have what it takes to do it? So yeah, any advice you could offer me would be great. Thanks Pat.
Pat Flynn: Hey Jackie, thank you so much for the question. First of all, let me just congratulate you on considering to go on your own. I know that's a tough decision. For me, I had gotten laid off, and that's something that I didn't really want at the time, because I didn't know what was possible. But here you are, you know it's possible, you're already generating some income to cover bills as you start to transition from corporate work, your 9-5, to what it is you're going to do, and you had said what I was just thinking as you were talking there: You said that, “You know, now that I have more time, maybe I can actually do even better and make more, and I can scale this up,” and that's exactly what's going to happen, Jackie. So, take what's working and focus on that. You're going to see that yes, you will, because you have more hours, and not only that, you're going to have the flexibility to do things when you want to do them, and you're not going to have somebody telling you all these things that may not align with what your goals may be. Now you are in control, but now you also have opportunities to do other things that you may not have been able to do, such as build relationships with other influencers, or go to conferences, or do other things that would allow you to grow your business.
The fear—trust me, I completely know where you're coming from because I had that fear myself, and I had that fear with zero income coming in and not really knowing what I was going to do. So I would say what I tell everybody when it comes to fear, and that is that fear is a sign that what you are about to do is something worth doing, or at least trying, right? A lot of people use that fear as an excuse to stop. “Oh, the fear means that this is bad.” In most cases, the fear is actually good.
Did you know that you're only born with two fears? The fear of falling and the fear of loud noises. This is why when you see a baby and you see the parents pretend to fall, kind of how they play, and they jump with the baby, the baby will flail its arms out wide because it's just this natural-born thing inside of us to stop ourselves from falling, and same thing with loud noises. Babies will jolt and act kind of weird when there's a loud noise, and it's because they kind of flail their limbs to try and ward off whatever's making that loud noise around them. All other fears are put into us by society, our parents, experiences from the past, past failures, what other people said about them. We are conditioned, as we're grown up, to consider failure as something bad. All these other things, all those fears we've learned, therefore all those fears we can conquer.
It's funny, because all those fears that were put into us, just those two fears that are innate, born into us, those are there to stop us from dying, right? But all these other fears that we learn as a result, they actually stop us from living. So you are at a crossroads now, and you have the opportunity to see this fear as something like a sign, that this is something that yes, it makes you nervous, but that nervousness is good. It's also a form of excitement, not the fact that this could actually be failure.
Also another strategy I would do is to recommend that you think about, “Okay, well what's the worst that can happen?” Let's say you go off on your own and you try this thing and it doesn't work out. Well, at least you gave it a shot, and you need to give it a shot. You need to put 100 percent into it, and you have the opportunity now, which you are blessed with. Because consider what might happen if you choose to just let this fear take you over and then you do get another job right away without even trying. What might you feel twenty years from now, thirty years from now, when maybe you are happy, and maybe you are just on this great path, or maybe you're not, and you might consider, “Well, what would have happened if I at least gave it a shot?” Don't you want to know what those answers are? It's the regret that crushes most people who are on their deathbed, the regret of not doing the things that they wish they had done, and I would recommend to you that you live—this is for all of you—that you live your life with more oh wells than what ifs. The what ifs are going to crush you, so don't live life with what ifs.
Jackie, I just want to say I'm proud of you for calling in. I'm thankful that you did this. I'm thankful that this is Episode 999 as we lead people into Episode 1000 next week. It's going to help a lot of people, and it's also going to show others, and hopefully it shows you—because I've already said this is going to help a lot of people—that you are not alone. This is a very common thing, but it is those people who push forward and persevere and leap over those failures or bust through them or experience those failures, who face their fears—those are the people who succeed, and that's why most people don't. So keep moving forward, Jackie. Thank you so much for the question. I want to sent you an AskPat teeshirt for having your question featured here on the show.
Before we get to today's winner, I want to give you a quote from H. Jackson Browne, Jr., and that is, “Success is getting what you want. Happiness is liking what you get.” Alright.
