AskPat 244 Episode Transcript
Pat Flynn: What's up everybody? Pat Flynn here, and welcome to Episode 244 of AskPat. Thank you so much for joining me today. We have a great question today, especially one to finish off the year. We do have episodes coming up next week as well, but this is a great question closing off 2014, because it'll help us think about what's coming up next year. Let's hear from Reuben right now.
Reuben: Hello Pat. How you doing? This is Reuben over here in Livermore, California. Dig your podcast. It's a great resource for everyone. My question today is, you mentioned some conferences that you have attended over the past year and a half, two years. May you suggest the top five, or a top 10 list of conferences to go to for 2015? Now I understand that there are thousands, so I would like to narrow the list for podcasting, networking, and online businesses. Okay? Thanks a lot. Looking forward to the next podcast.
Pat Flynn: Reuben, what's up? Thank you so much for this question. I think a lot of people are going to benefit from listening to this, because there are a lot of great conferences out there. Like you said, there's thousands, and I'm going to point you toward a few that I have experience with, that I will more than likely be attending. I may or may not be attending all of these, but all of these I have attended in the past, or well be attending in the future as well. The first one, and I'm going to go in sort of a chronological order throughout the year . . . I will probably be speaking at more. Some of these, like I said, I may not be speaking at, but we'll see. I'll have a schedule on SmartPassiveIncome.com and PatFlynn.com very soon, with my speaking schedule. You will be able to see an updated list there as well, if you're listening to this in the future. For now, I'm going to give you my top, one, two three, four, five, seven. My top seven. You said 5 to 10; I'll meet you in the middle.
The first one is Social Media Marketing World. Again, that's Social Media Marketing World. You can check it out at SocialMediaExaminer.com. It's an even that I've been at for the last few years. It's put on by Michael Stelzner, the CEO and founder of Social Media Examiner, the number one online magazine for all things social media. You've got to check it out. It's a higher priced event, but it is definitely worth the price. You get a higher caliber crowd there, and speakers, and it's just such a well run event. Michael always knows how to put on a great show. The last two years, the opening party was on the USS Midway, here in San Diego. It's always in San Diego, because that's actually where Michael and I both are from, and he puts on a fantastic event there. Again, that's Social Media Marketing World. That's great, especially for networking. They actually have these networking games, and ways for you to really easily meet new people, so that's really cool.
Next is New Media Expo. This is sort of, I would say, my home blog conference. It's not just a blogging conference anymore. It used to be known as BlogWorld Expo. I remember first attending it back in 2010. Now it's New Media Expo, and it's going to be even bigger this year, because it is working in conjunction with the NAB, National Association of Broadcasters. I believe that's what it is. There's going to be a lot of people there, which means there's going to be a lot of opportunities to meet a lot of people, and network, and that sort of thing. As a bonus, I am actually doing the opening keynote for the event, which I have already been preparing for and I am so excited about. It's going to definitely be my biggest presentation ever in terms of audience, but hopefully in terms of production value and content value for the audience as well. You can check that out at NMXLive, New Media Expo, nmxlive.com.
Next I want to mention Podcast Movement. Podacasting is huge now, and last year was the first year of Podcast Movement. Unfortunately I couldn't be there to keynote like I was asked to, and I was just so glad and amazingly humbled by Dan Franks and Jared Easley who had asked me to speak, but I am actually opening the keynote . . . I'm the opening keynote for Podcast Movement this year as well. That's coming up in the end of July, I believe July 31 through August 2, I want to say. You can go to PodcastMovement.com to find more information about that. If you're at all interested in, or are already a podcaster, you've got to check it out, PodcastMovement.com.
Then there's a conference I want to mention. For those of you who are overseas in Europe, NewMediaEurope.com. I was asked to speak at this as well, although it conflicts with some other things that are going on, so I won't be able to make it. I know it's going to be a great event. Chris Ducker will be there, so you have to go if you are over in that area. Again, NewMediaEurope.com. That's going to happen sometime in September. Sort of a new media, podcasting, blogging, new media type of event for those of you in the UK area and around there. NewMediaEurope.com.
I also want to give a shout out to Michael Hyatt and his conference, Platform Conference, so PlatformUniversity.com. I don't know when the next one might be, but I've been to two out of the three that have been put on. I went to the first one which was in Tennessee, Nashville, Tennessee I believe. The last one I went to this past year was in Colorado Springs. Both were just mind blowing and completely amazing. Just such a great crowd there as well.
I also want to mention, to finish off, FinCon: Financial Blogger Conference. I have space in my heart for this conference because they, especially Philip Taylor, the person who puts it on from PTMoney.com . . . This is a conference that was originally created for the personal finance community, which is one of the most tight-knit blogging communities out there, and I was asked to speak and I did. Actually the closing speech was my . . . In 2011, that was my very first time on stage, so I was sweating bullets. I was wearing a shirt that was probably the wrong color, because you could see my pit stains and stuff, but anyway I had a great time. I owe a lot to Philip and the Financial Blogger Conference, because they were such a great crowd, especially for me being so nervous at my first public speaking gig. Now I've since been addicted to it, so a lot of credit goes to them. It's just such a well run, very well thought out, conference. All the little details that you love to see, they're there. Philip puts on a great show. You can check it out at FinConExpo.com. F-I-N-C-O-N-E-X-P-O.com.
I also want to mention a site that . . . Chris Ducker and I, we do these live events every once in a while. If you're interested in what me and Chris are up to next year, you can check out 1DayBB.com. We have something cool coming up in January of next year, and maybe some more things coming in mid-year as well. Again, 1DayBB.com. You should all go there. Check that out.
Thank you again for the question, Reuben. I hope you guys get a lot of inspiration from this, and hopefully are able to attend at least one of these, because there's just nothing like meeting people in person, and getting together with this many people, who have the same mindset, who are all there for the same reason. Not only do you learn a lot of stuff, but you get to have a lot of fun and meet a lot of cool people too. Just to go down the line one more time: Social Media Marketing World, New Media Expo, that's in April, NMXLive.com. Podcast Movement, that's at the end of July, beginning of August. New Media Europe. It's New Media Europe in September. Platform Conference. Fincon, and me and Chris's stuff at 1DayBB.com. Check it out.
Thank you so much. I appreciate you. I will see you in the next episode of AskPat next week, which is our final three episodes until 2015. Got some good questions to answer for you there. To leave you with a quote . . . this quote is from Zig Ziglar. He says, “Far too many people have no idea what they can do, because all they have been told is what they can't do. They don't know what they want, because they don't know what's available for them.”
That quote hits home for me, for sure. Cheers, take care, and I'll see you in the next episode of AskPat.
