SPI 007: Blogging Success and WordPress Plugin Development with 20-Year-Old Entrepreneur Michael Dunlop

The Smart Passive Income Podcast Logo

In this session of the Smart Passive Income Podcast, I interview Michael Dunlop of IncomeDiary.com, who is a 20-year-old entrepreneur who seems to know exactly what he’s doing. He’s making well over six figures online from blogging working half-time hours, and he’s recently found success with a brand-new premium WordPress plugin that he just launched, Pop Up Domination. I chat with him quite a bit about that process because I’m also interested in software development as a potential income source in the future. This interview definitely makes me want to get it done ASAP.

Pat, great stuff dude. Michael is a young gun who can teach us so much. He has done extremely well generating a blogging empire and cult following. It’s great to hear these inspiring stories, especially from these awesome rock stars like MD.

    Thanks for sharing.

      • Pat

        Thanks dude! I appreciate that!

  • http://bloggersjournal.com Mark Bell

    Hey Pat,
Great podcast – Michael has got it nailed. I’ve actually taken his comprehensive course on developing a blog. What I’ve taken from this though, is that he has managed so much with the important support of those around you. Whilst having an entrepreneur to assist you, you’ll get there quicker. But anyone is capable. I think the key is motivation. His father encouraged and motivated him. For yourself, the motivation was being out of a job and having a family to look out for.
The tips Michael gives always seem so simple – but they work!
Awesome stuff Pat – catch up soon – nice work on your niche site earnings btw!

    • Pat

Definitely – motivation is key. Without it, ideas just stay ideas and nothing ever happens. How would you recommend people get motivated when they don’t have a situation like ours with a father to push them along, or a loss of a job?

      • http://bloggersjournal.com Mark Bell

I think when you haven’t something pushing you along it’s very difficult to stay motivated. I get motivated by a few things,
        – my natural curiosity to learn something new
        – to share what I know in the hope of helping someone
I’m fortunate to have a “normal” job that satisfies these too. I also use my blog as a creative outlet, which I otherwise don’t get being a researcher.

I often fall back on the W5H (Who, What, When, Where, Why, How) to motivate myself. I recommend writing yourself a small mission statement. In this you must answer the 6 questions, W5H.
        – WHO – Any successful business venture has to solve a problem by providing a solution or service. So who do you want to help?
        – WHAT – What has been done already? What can you do to fill a gap in the market,or what can you do to improve an existing product.
        – WHEN – I think is most important. When you’ve no job, your deadline is always the next date your bills are paid. I strongly recommend you give yourself deadlines, and stick to them. Fine yourself for over-running – it’s a great way to make extra savings!
        – WHERE – where do you want to work? Sounds a little random – but do you want to work at home? Do you want the ability to work anywhere, any time?
        – WHY – This is important too. Why do you want to start your business? Your clients are motivation – but that is outlined in HOW. This part focuses on you. Do you want more time to spend with family? Do you want flexibility? You can be a little selfish here – after all you should be rewarded for hard work.
        – HOW – How will you achieve it? Will you sell physical products? Will you become an affiliate marketer? What about a website? Facebook?

I’m a believer in writing out your mission statement around these 6 key points, and expanding upon it. Print it out, or keep it somewhere easily seen to remind you of what you are working towards.

The last point, to stay motivated, because it’s not easy. Get the support of others. I recall times through my PhD studies that things felt stagnant, and I wanted to quit, but my family and peers got me through.

Can’t wait to listen to it!
I’m 20 right now, so it gives me motivation!

I’ve been following you advice, thanks a lot for your help, hopefullly you do a podcast about video soon

I rarely listen to podcast, but when you get two (2) great minds together…Thanks Mentor!

  • http://storageauctionwealth.com Tim

    Hey Pat,

Great episode! Michael always shares a wealth of knowledge and I enjoy hearing him speak. I wish you would have a podcast each week.

  • romantic

The thing is, in life, a lot of people understand what to complete, but handful of people in fact do what they know. Knowing is not enough! You have got to to become self-sufficient

  • http://67dollars.com/ Jason

Unfortunately this guy doesn’t pay much attention to his copywriting as there are numerous spelling mistakes and grammar errors all over his stuff…especially his email courses. But, I guess content quality is overlooked when your design is nice and you’re making mad cash…

    • Pat

They spell a lot of things differently in the UK. But, regardless of spelling and grammar – he knows what people want and knows how to give it to them and make a profit!

  • Ron

Doesn’t “Aweber” and “Get Response” has a system in place to do this type of thing already? Creating the web form, making a light box? And if you are just starting out with less than 100 on your list, the service is free. Its looks like a great product, really, but just seems like an extra step.

    • Pat

They do have those lightbox options, but they are nothing like Pop Up Domination because of the quality of the images that are used, ease of use and the options that come along with it. I think if you did a split test between the Aweber one and this one you’d see a huge difference.

Even though I had Michael on MY podcast a couple of weeks ago, I still took away a few great little gems from this one, too.

    His knowledge level is fantastic.

    Nice work, man.

    • Pat

Thanks Chris – didn’t mean to steal any of your thunder!

  • Devin Elder

Great podcast, Michael is killing it and I got a ton of value from this.

I have a programmer in first grade, I’m thinking of firing him after this :-)

    • Pat

      Uhh..lol. Really?

  • http://www.my4hrworkweek.com Eric | My 4-Hour Workweek

Great podcast man! I’ve seen Dunlop all over lately, especially with the heavy promotion of his WordPress plugin. It was really nice to just hear about his story and how he built himself up.

He reminds me a bit of Glen – both very young and crushing it.

    • Pat

He does remind me of Glen quite a bit – not just cause they are young and from the UK..but mostly their out-of-box thinking and how they are crushing it like you said.

      • http://www.my4hrworkweek.com Eric | My 4-Hour Workweek

I’d love to turn the clock back 6 years and find my way into internet marketing / entrepreneurship.

        Stupid college education…

  • http://www.healthmoneysuccess.com Vincent

    Hi Pat,

Great Interview. I am a high school student who is blogging and trying to make money online so I could relate a lot of this to me. I also related in wanting to make money from everything I do. That was the attitude Michael had and I share that with him. So this interview was amazing for me.

Another great interview. Nicely done Pat

  • http://www.30andbroke.com Will

Awesome interview Pat. Michael is a pretty smart dude, wise beyond his years it seems.

It’s interesting his success and how he really simplifies things to just a few steps.

Sometimes we tend to really overcomplicate things, I guess a form of procrastination.

I know I struggle with that.

But anyway… Kudos. Solid interview and your podcasts are getting better and better each time.
