SPI 060: Behind the Scenes of My New Publication, Let Go

The Smart Passive Income Podcast Logo

In this session of The Smart Passive Income Podcast, I’m really excited to talk all about my new multimedia book, Let Go, which just recently went live this past Monday!

To get Let Go, download the Snippet App for iPhone or iPad (Android and Kindle version coming soon!), then download ‘Let Go’ and enjoy!

So far, the reaction to the book has been amazing!

Check out these testimonials on Twitter:

Before it was able to go live this past Monday, a lot of things had to happen in order to get this book “on the shelf”. From writing the book to hiring the team I didn’t know I had to hire to help me complete it, to dealing with a brand new publishing platform and why I chose to publish on it in the first place – I cover all of this in today’s session.

Halfway through the show, I also bring on my ‘Let Go Team’ to chat with me about the entire process: Matt Gartland, editor and producer, and Caleb Wojcik, videographer. I couldn’t be happier with the team and everything we’ve done up to this point. It’s been an interesting, joyful, stressful and fulfilling experience for all of us, and we’re so happy to be sharing something we are proud of with you!

More specifically, in this session you’ll find out about:

  • How the brand new Snippet platform is revolutionizing the way we consume content beyond text.
  • Why I jumped on this opportunity, in spite of the fact that I was in the middle of another book project!
  • How the Snippet platform let me tell my story in a deeper way than I could ever do with just text or just video.
  • My writing process and the tools that I used to help me along the way.
  • Why I hired Caleb Wojcik and Matt Gartland, how I found them, and the roles they played in this project.
  • Some of the marketing tactics I used to build buzz about Let Go.
  • My creation of a personal site, outside of Smart Passive Income, to showcase this book and other projects.
  • Why it was important to build an email list before the book was launched.
  • Some of the hardships we all faced with this project, but what excited all of us about Let Go and the Snippet platform.
  • Where we think publishing is headed in the future.
  • Plus a whole lot more…

    Hi Pat,
Congratulations to your book! I just downloaded it but hadn’t had the time to watch/read yet but I think Easter is the perfect time to do that 😉
Also looking forward to listening to the new Podcast! Really missed it last week!
Happy Easter to you and your family!

    • Pat Flynn

Thanks Monja! I was sad I missed last weeks too – it was supposed to be THIS episode last week but the book launch was delayed a week. All good though! Thanks and let me know how you like ‘Let Go’! Happy Easter!

      • http://winningedits.com Matt Gartland

        Hi Monja-

I agree; Easter is a great opportunity to experience an inspiring story like Pat’s, especially in this Snippet format. Would love to hear your thoughts on the story and reading experience afterward.

True friends, a lot of the best moments we can do to make the passion in our ability. and I am happy to share

  • http://www.amazon.com/author/ankitneerav Ankit Neerav

    Hey Pat,
I loved the teaser and I’m gonna buy and read it asap! Loved the concept of the elephant! But I do have a question.. Do you think its time for you to write a biography like this one? Dont you think there is still a lot more that you can and you will achieve!?

    • http://www.amazon.com/author/ankitneerav Ankit Neerav

Or is there an automatic update feature that snippet offers? Wouldnt it be really cool to have an ongoing biopic..with updates say, every year?? 😉

    • Pat Flynn

If anyone has a message or experience to share that could potentially inspire and help others realize what they may have yet to realize, then I definitely think it’s time. I’m sure I will live through many more experiences that I could share in the future, whether through another book or just a blog post, and whether it’s something that I could include in this story from being let go to finding my way as an entrepreneur, or a new story about something that happens from here on out, again, if it can add value to other people’s lives, then I personally feel it’s okay.

      • http://winningedits.com Matt Gartland

That’s a good thought-starter, Ankit. The nice thing about a platform like Snippet is that you can build an organic/living biography that you can update at major milestones within your life/career.

So, Pat could add a new featured chapter a year from now that reflects some of his more recent entrepreneurial ventures.

The ability to build a living, breathing reading experience is very exciting. I’m thrilled that Pat, with his great story, had the chance to start that process.

  • http://www.marketingyourfarm.com/ Iain

Looking forward to hearing about this process.

I really like the idea of being able to include multimedia into a book. I mean how many times have you read a book and said, “I wish I could see a video or a picture” of what they are talking about.

From what it seems, this type of book is exactly that, which is pretty spectacular.

  • http://www.smartselfdevelopmentplan.com Jantje

Dear Pat, I can’t wait for the Easter Break to start digging into your multimedia book! I liked the teaser a lot, and knowing a bit about your story and seeing the elephant on the cover did it for me (I love elephants!). And the low price came at a surprise! Thanks!

  • http://www.pocketchanged.com Caleb Wojcik

It was an honor to be a part of this project and to share a bit more about it on this episode Pat. Thanks for having me on. :)

If anyone has any specific questions about the launch trailer or videos within Let Go I’d be happy to answer them.

    • http://winningedits.com Matt Gartland

Like Caleb, it was a great pleasure to work on this project. Pat, Caleb and I had a fantastic time putting together a really compelling story. Being able to share some of the details in this episode was a thrill.

If anyone’s curious about the production process on a digital product like this, I’d be happy to share some additional insights.

      • http://www.chrisducker.com Chris C. Ducker

Hope all is good – seems like forever since we did that video interview in Vegas together!

You did a remarkable job in helping Pat post this story together so brilliantly. It was, genuinely a page-turner for me (even though I know the story well already).

Excellent work, and I might just be reaching out to you soon on a project of my own…

        • http://thesnippetapp.com Ben @ Snippet

Chris – It would be amazing to see a Snippet of yours, too! Since I read the first manuscript of Pat’s Let Go, I’ve been to your site a few times. You have great insight to share as well!

  • http://www.hcgdietrecipesmadesimple.com Toni Scott

So happy abut your new endeavor and I can’t wait to read the book. Pat, you are adding value every day to thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of lives. Just yesterday I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts and they were talking about what they liked to listen to on long road trips. Pat Flynn was the first name they mentioned! Amazing!

  • http://www.igniteliving.com Charlie Pabst

Awesome work, you guys! Great podcast and work on the SnippetApp.

Caleb, since you offered to answer questions, I’ll have a go at you :) What camera did you use and/or recommend for videos? Yours came out looking so damn good.

    Thanks, fellas!

    • http://pocketchanged.com Caleb Wojcik

Most was shot on a Canon 5D Mark III, but that is pretty pricey. A good starter camera (and what Pat uses) is the Canon T4i. Here is a complete gear list used to create the videos in Let Go (since people are bound to ask ;)). Each piece was used in at least one shot.

Bodies: Two: (1) Canon 5D Mark III, (1) Canon 60D
      Lenses: Three L-Series: (1) Canon 35mm f1.4, (1) Canon 50mm f1.2, (1) Canon 85mm f1.4
      Tri/Mono-pods: (1) Manfrotto MVH502A Head/546 Tripod, (1) Manfrotto 561BHDV1
Audio: (1) Rode Videomic Pro, (2) Audio Technica AT899, (1) Tascam DR-100 Mark II
      Misc: (1) Zacuto Z-Finder Pro

Pat very inspiring! Listening to the podcast now. Getting out of the comfort zone is hard to do but once you are out there the sky is the limit. I need an ios device to read it :-( been working my way through all the podcasts!! They are so great and helpful you need to do them more frequently i cant get enough :-)

  • http://kimanziconstable.com Kimanzi Constable

Can’t wait to dive in Pat, looks very revolutionary. Would Snippet be something you would recommend to an author who already has a book on the other Platforms?

  • http://youronline.biz Darnell Jackson

Congrats on blazing yet another path Pat keep up the good work it’s good to see amazing success is still out there if you work and wait for it.

  • Suad

Congratulations, I love Let Go, inspiring story and the new platform is amazing.
Btw, you have not put the link, for the tool you used to write the snippet “scrivener”.

  • Ian

    Hi Pat,

I picked up your book and from what I’ve read so far it’s great! Also, the app, Snippet is awesome. I love the interactivity. I look forward to reading the rest and getting inspired. Thanks man!

  • http://www.shalusharma.com/ Shalu Sharma

Congratulations on your new publication. I will be looking at the snippet.

  • http://www.hisplushersequalsours.com Derek C. Olsen

I just purchased the book on my iPhone. Very cool. I look forward to digging in.
Question: Can you leave ratings and reviews on Snippet yet?

  • http://yourbuygoldguide.com Ken @ gold buyers guide

Congratulations on producing another winner. I am looking forward to listening to let go.

  • http://bellsandbounty.com Megan Pangan

This Snippet was awesome pat, love this platform, love your story and the vids. I’m looking forward to releasing on this platform as well. I wanted to ask, if I already purchased the book on my iPhone, when it’s available on Kindle, will I be able to simply download it without paying twice?

  • http://www.jasongracia.com Jason Gracia

This episode had so much packed into it. Writing tips, launch tips, marketing tips, audience tips. I’m supposed to be working on my next episode but instead I’m writing down tons of notes. Way to get in the way of my progress. :)

    Hey Pat,
Congratulations on another book… and good work utilizing multiple platforms for delivery of your content. Really becoming a superstar!

  • http://thehowtomakemoneyonlinemom.com Julie

Just bought it and can’t wait to read it. I know it will be interesting reading more about your life. Thank you for sharing it with all of us.

  • http://www.michaelspencer.me Michael Spencer

Bought the book, Pat. I’m really looking forward to getting to know both Snippet and your story a little bit more.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ShelterPet Andy Mathis, DVM

Great Interview. I downloaded and read Let Go yesterday. It is nice to hear about how it came together on the podcast today.

I think it is exciting how digital books and magazines are evolving. Publishing Shelter Pet Magazine to help homeless pets find a home would not be possible with a traditional magazine because of the time needed for printing and distribution. A digital publication is almost instantly available.

  • http://khmerbird.com Santel

    Hi Pat,

I finished the book last night. I know some of your story but Let Go allowed me to know your personal story, how you started your first sale on the internet.

I love the video of your life in the train which you called it a classroom. If we are ready to face any challenge in life, we will find our own way out. As for example you could transfer the train into a classroom!

I am doing exactly the same now on my way in my car between home and office. I listen to your Podcast and many others.

    I learned new things everyday.

I a so glad that you share this story with us. What I can get the most from your book is that we need to control our own destiny. Spend time to think and figure out the solution!

  • Karen

Congrats! I’ve been reading your blogs for quite awhile but never conmented here. You’re doing amazing! Always was curious to know about your wife, April. Will deginitely check it out. Hey quick question. Is thesnippetapp.com a WordPress theme?

  • http://tiepthilienketblog.blogspot.com/ tiep thi lien ket

Hi, i am wondering why you choose the brand Let go for the book, what meaning it stands for ?

  • http://9booksource.com/ Hannah Tran

Thanks Pat! Great stuffs! I am a fan of yours and has been revising most of your posts a few times. You are my inspiration !

  • http://www.omgtoplists.com Michael

    Great book Indeed.
Pat, I noticed that you haven’t published your February Income Report yet.
Are you gonna publish it this month or will you mention it in March report?

  • http://wealthyturtle.com Mike Collins

Must be pretty cool to be one of the first authors who gets to publish on an entirely new platform. It will be interesting to see if Snippet really takes off.

  • http://www.herviewphotography.com Darlene

Bought it! Haven’t read it yet but the platform looks really cool, looking forward to it!

  • http://my1stlook.blogspot.in/ Hossain

Hats off to you! Excellent work sir!
I am so glade to be a visitor of your site and tanks for inspiring me a lot.

  • http://www.raspyni.com Barry Friedman

This might just drive me over to Apple platforms! I’ll give it a bit more time for the Android version… but then!

Congratulations, Pat. It’s been a pleasure watching and learning from your journey.

  • Suad

Why Snippet App, does not work fully.
The videos take quite some time to load, literally days. Plus when it gets loaded, it is not full content. The interview with your dad is 4 minutes or so but it cuts off after a minute.

I got my copy of Let Go, 4 days ago but I don’t have the full content. I am not getting the full story.

I love your your story and thank you for sharing it, it is very inspiring, I am just not happy with Snippet App performance & they need work on it.

  • http://www.naylandhouse.com Lewis Saka

I love your story Pat and was looking forward to experience it on this new Snippet app, but the app does not work as advertised. The media content (videos) don’t load you have to wait ages; when your reading a page turner you get impatient and just close the app. Is this a known problem with a fix coming soon? I hope so otherwise this is a wasted opportunity for the makers of the app.

  • http://installationelectriquemaison-fr.blogspot.com/ thomas favore

I agree; Easter is a great opportunity to experience an inspiring story like Pat’s, especially in this Snippet format. Would love to hear your thoughts on the story and reading experience afterward.

  • Tipjar

    February income report?

  • Mike

Why haven’t you released a February income report march is already gone????

  • http://www.webdevisland.com Nicole

Congratulations! Can’t wait to check this out! I’ll have to wait until the app is available for android. Any idea when this might be?

  • http://www.empowernetwork.com/earnwithaleshia/ Aleshia Green

You have come a long way Patt. I remember when I was just reading your blog to learn how to blog, and you were discussing a niche site duel..then I got all inspired by the others involved and I followed through but ventured off late last year sometime..Never forgetting, just trying my own thing..which ended up being social media consulting after trying the building an adsense niche website income..which didnt work for me..

Now I have venturing back into blogging. Keep inspiring Pat. Really!

  • http://www.printerwhiz.com Mark McKnight

I’m looking forward to seeing how your sales on this book have went in your upcoming monthly income reports. I think it’ll be a real winner.

  • http://www.mycanoncamera.com Peter

Hey guys. I purchased a copy of Let Go. It looks great. I really like the formatting and transitions from one chapter to the next. I love the interactivity too. I think Kindle has some competition. Good job.

I loved the Snippet. I really liked the way that the videos tied back into the story and gave it deeper meaning. Great Job Team Pat!

  • http://voitureeconomique-fr.blogspot.com/ France 2013

I cannot wait to listen to the podcast.

  • http://www.internetentrepreneurconnection.com Hector Avellaneda

Definitely an inspiring story Pat. I think that ‘letting go’ is definitely the hardest thing to do as a full time entrepreneur running an online business. I will say however, that I think ‘letting go’ is not only harder for part-time entrepreneurs (people still holding on to a full-time job and building a business part time) but in a way it can be self-limiting.

I think once you make the decision to become an entrepreneur, build a business and accomplish something great you just have to go all in and not look back, otherwise you;re always going to be on the fence with the ‘what if’s’ and the ‘but’s’ of life.

I sent you an email about the development work for your .ME site. Definitely looks very cool and you answered my question on this podcast. Awesome stuff!

You’re an inspiration to all of us Pat and I always learn something new from all of your podcast’s – its what has me coming back to learn more from you. Good stuff.

  • http://www.kentanphoto.com Ken Tan

Looking forward to the podcast, Pat!
