LIST BUILDING LIVE: One Event… 300 Leads with Courtney Vickery

Pat Flynn: Hey, it’s Pat Flynn, and you’re listening to List Building Live, our first ever virtual audio summit right here on the SPI podcast, where each day we release about six mini episodes to help you grow your email list. Why? Because you don’t own social media, but you should own your audience. So each day for three days in a row, we are bringing you people directly from Liz’s and my communities to share what’s working to grow your email list today.

That’s right. No, quote unquote, experts or eight-figure entrepreneurs talking about what worked for them years ago. Just regular creators like you who are working towards making a living online. Enough talking. Let’s get into it.

Liz WIlcox: All right, Miss Courtney, this one is gonna be good. I can feel it. What is one way you’ve been growing your email list in the last six to twelve months?

Courtney Vickery: Yeah, we actually have doubled our list, which again, we’re a small business, so, you know, that doesn’t mean that we have tens of thousands of subscribers, but we have the ones that, you know, are our audience. And the biggest reason is because I’m selective about what bundles I sign up for. I really kind of got into looking into different bundles and different communities to see what would be a good fit for us, because we do have a pretty specific niche.

We work with mostly weight inclusive private practices, but we will work with any weight inclusive business as long as our– you know, we vibe and our values align, we’ll work with you, um, and are service-based. So, um, you know, we started looking into what kind of bundles we could participate in, and the biggest thing is that they have to make sense for us because I don’t…

You know, I don’t want a list of people that don’t really want to be there, that just want to grab the thing and then dip out. So we look for service-based businesses. We love working, you know, with women business owners, so we look for bundles like that. And then, yeah, another thing is that I don’t like to create something that I don’t already have.

So I want to make sure I’m not creating extra work for myself if it’s not necessary. So if we have an opt-in or a product that makes sense for the bundle, then that’s even better.

Liz WIlcox: Okay, how are you finding bundles? I feel like everybody and their mother is like, bundle, bundle, bundle. But if I’m brand new, how, how am I finding these in the first place?

Courtney Vickery: Yeah, I found them through mostly Facebook groups, which is where I meet a lot of other business owners. It’s really the only reason I use Facebook at this point. Um, but started there, and then it just kind of… You know, once you kind of get into the entry door of bundles, you start getting access to tons of others.

So, you know, specifically I’m thinking of, like, Cat Griffin, who does tons of bundles. Liz, I did her Christmas party. I don’t know her last name off the top of my head. And then another one is Letitia Jadene, I think is her last name. She has like a whole community that’s collaborative. So kind of getting into those communities, and they have almost like a directory of collaborations you can s- choose from, which is really nice The Cat and Liz are free, but the Letisha’s one is like a membership.

So kind of just depends on where you want to start.

Liz WIlcox: Yeah. So side note, Cat and Letisha are a part of List Building Live. Yeah. So y’all, you know I’m bringing the heat. I’m bringing the best guests possible. And then Lizzie Goddard is who Courtney’s talking about, and, uh, she’s really great for collaborations as well, if you can get into her Facebook group.

Yes, it is on and… I think it’s even called Party Pad, y’all. It is on and popping over there. So if you’re into collabs, into, you know, seeing what you can see over there, definitely get in. So if I… Like, can we break down what a bundle is? ‘Cause I know there’s a lot of people that, you know, they’re… Maybe they’re in an industry where it’s not as popular, but it definitely could be if they just knew what it was.

Courtney Vickery: Yeah. So I would say it’s a bunch of business owners that are aligned in some way, whether that’s the audience, or the kind of offers, or, you know, values aligned, whatever it may be, and they all come together and give their either opt-in offers or their products, either for free or at a discount. Sometimes they have different tiers.

But basically, it’s a way for people that want to, quote-unquote, “attend” the, the bundles and get all of the products for free or at a discount that you normally either wouldn’t know of, because it’s really a networking opportunity too, and then also get it at a discount. Which is always nice.

Liz WIlcox: Yes, we love a discount.

Listen, y’all, I always say I’m like the Walmart of email marketing. Like, I l- I’m for the everyday people, so I h- I love a discount. I think bundles are a great, great way to grow, and even especially if you’re in an industry… Like, okay, so I’m obviously in the internet marketing industry. There’s a lot of bundles.

I just opened my email before this call, and I had three people in my inbox asking me if I wanted to be a part of a bundle. So it’s true what Courtney says. Like, once you’re in it, you’re in it, right? But even when I was an RV travel blogger, right, that’s an industry you might be thinking, “Oh, well, I’m not you, Liz.

I’m not Courtney or whatever. You know, it’s not in my industry.” You could even host your own bundle, and then you get all the leads because you’re the host, right? She mentioned Cat, Lizzie, Letisha. You know, they’re the ones creating the landing page, you know, reaching out to me and Courtney, et cetera, and they’re getting all the leads to sign up for the bundle.

So if you are in an industry where you’re like, “Oh, I would love to do this, but I just… You know, I did what Courtney said. I joined the Facebook groups, but I can’t find one”… Guarantee you, if you hosted one, people are going to jump on it, right? Like we, Courtney just said like, “I’m only on Facebook because I need to network.

I need to like connect people,” are… I don’t, I don’t know if I could say the word desperate, but you know, they are actively searching for those collaborations. So if you wanted to kind of go the extra mile and host your own, I think hosting your own bundle is a great idea as well.

Courtney Vickery: Yeah. We, um, you know, I’m in a very specific niche, like I said, and we even have other dieticians who have also done bundles, and I’ve participated in theirs.

So like you said, if you don’t have one, just be the first one.

Liz WIlcox: Yeah, and I love that, you know, Courtney is not the typical, you know, content creator trying to, you know, make money with reels or build an email list to sell a digital product or have a membership or, you know. And so if you’re listening and you’re thinking like, “Wow, I can relate.

Maybe I could do a bundle too,” you definitely, definitely can. And what I like about bundles is you can get a lot of subscribers at once. So Courtney, do you have any numbers that you could share with us, even if they’re just roundabout of, “Oh, I participated in X amount of bundles and got this”?

Courtney Vickery: Oh, I should have.

I love numbers. I should have that written down somewhere. I will say that Lizzi’s Christmas party, I got the most that I’ve gotten ever. I don’t know if it was because of the time of the year, but I know we got several hundred new subscribers just from that one bundle. And another thing I like to be conscious of is that the people that are already on my list, I always give them the option to opt out from, you know, getting the tons of emails about particular bundles if they already came from that bundle.

Like, I don’t want them to keep getting the same email from me over and over if they’re like, “I already have this. Stop telling me about it.” So once they get on it, it’s most important to me that they want to stay on it. But yeah, Lizzi’s party was probably the one that we got the most from.

Liz WIlcox: Yeah, so listen to what she said.

Rewind it if you need to. Several hundred, that’s a lot of leads. Holy moly. I know s- there are some other speakers that have talked about ads and things, and even, you know, sponsoring newsletters and things like that, and they spent, you know, anywhere from 100 bucks to $3,000. You know, there’s was a guy I think talking about, you know, he’s spending hundreds of dollars a day, you know, to get those leads.

Courtney just signed up for this bundle free of charge. She’s just offering something, and people are signing up hundreds of leads, and she’s doing the right thing by saying, you know, “Hey, do you want to stick around?” Or, “Hey, you know, am I, am I talking about something you already know about?” Right? So I love this.

The potential is absolutely huge with bundles. So I’m getting excited thinking about people going into Facebook like, “Oh yeah, I remember my login. Let me go find these Facebook groups,” things like that. And even I have a Facebook group called Email Soundbooth, and we can link that in the description. And, you know, there’s a l- there’s a lot of people in there always promoting their bundles.

And I work with a lot of different types of folks. It’s not just like B to B to B to B. So if you’re looking for that sort of random bundle, you just might find it. So anyway, speaking of email lists and growing them, Courtney, if we want to get on your email list today, how can we do that?

Courtney Vickery: Yes, there’s several ways.

If you go to my website, which is Declet, D-E-C-L-E-T, which is my kids’ names smushed together, decletdesigns.com we have a page that has all of our free resources on it. I like to just keep it simple, and they’re all on that one page, and it’s just a, a list of forms with exactly what you get, um, with our top resources.

A lot of them are website focused, local SEO, and branding.

Liz WIlcox: Awesome. Thanks so much.

Pat Flynn: Okay, another great list-building strategy from one of our amazing community members. I just love seeing people find ways to grow that I didn’t even think of. That’s something I’ve always loved about being in communities with other entrepreneurs.
