At this very moment, I’m running a little experiment to try and promote iCaption Mobile, our new iPhone App, while it’s waiting to be approved by Apple.
I’ve tried to contact a multitude of iPhone app review sites to do previews, which they say they enjoy doing more than reviews since it gives them a sneak peek of new apps, but I have yet to hear back from one of the 10 or so I’ve contacted. So much for that.
So instead, we’re doing something a little different. We’re holding a contest for the best “Pirate Pickup Line” to help bring people to icaptionmobile.com and spread word about the app. I think because of the nature of the application and what people will do on it (leave captions for photos and topics similar to this one), this is a perfect opportunity to do something like this. After the contest is over, I’ll go into detail with you exactly how it works and if it was successful or not.
Like I said before, the application is currently awaiting approval by Apple, but we’re trying to time it so that it’s approved at around the same time we announce the contest winner. We’ll see how it goes. We’re just trying to think of out of the box ways to promote the application.
I’d love for you to check out the contest page and enter too! There’s no need for an iPhone, and we’re looking for as many submissions as possible because we want to compile them all into a youtube video which will hopefully spread the word about iCaption Mobile even more. I love experiments.
Actually, I just sent out the first tweet about the contest at the beginning of this post, and we’ve already got 3 submissions! Good times.
Click HERE to be taken to the contest page. Entries on The Smart Passive Income Blog will not count towards the contest.
Have any of you held any contests on your website before, and if so – how did they go? If you have a link to your contest page (even though it may be over), I’d love to check it out. Thanks!
UPDATE: So it’s been 3 hours since I published this post, and we already have 12 submissions, and an entire blog post at an entry sweepstakes page about the contest. Check it out HERE. Ahh, the power of twitter. I can’t really say this is viral, but it definitely is spreading slowly.

“Gotta little Captain in ya?”
Nice one Son! Are you sure you don’t want to leave that one on icaptionmobile.com and enter the contest
Cheers!
whoops! trying to read on a blackberry while in a movie… not recommended!
Have you noticed this time around that its more competitive to get an application into iTunes because of the new rush of iPhone app designers? It seems like a lot more people are joining the app gold rush nowadays and I was wondering how it was affecting app creators?
and I read this on another site which I thought was hilarious… “Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre you free on Saturday?”
Good luck on the contest!
I really like your resourcefulness. If one idea doesn’t work out like you had hoped, try something else. Glad to hear the contest idea is working better for you. I’m excited to see this app in the itunes store. Question – it looked like users will be able to submit photos for commenting on, but where is the backend for this site? Will there be a web-based version to go along with the application? I’m just curious at to what your plans are?
Interesting contest Pat– good luck!
