The #1 Way To Increase Traffic then Income – Be Nice

I found the secret to increasing traffic to your website. It has worked for me 100% of the time on both blogs that I currently own. What’s the big secret? It’s being nice to people.

Greetings! How are you today? I hope this day has brought you great joy! Ok, enough!. That’s not what I mean by “being nice”. You can have whatever attitude you want on your blog or website, and a lot of times it helps to have an edge or some kind of personality to convey to your readers.

What I mean by being nice is to always be honest, always be responsive, and always go the extra mile. If someone emails you, you should always do your best to respond. I mean, they took the time to contact you, so don’t be a butt and not respond back. Even just a “Hey, I got your email, and I’ll get back to you real soon” would suffice.

It may sound a little weird, but Karma does exist in the blogging world. If you are honest, show passion, respond, and give people what they want – you will be rewarded in one way or another.

So, how does being nice translate to more web traffic?

Every once and a while, you’ll come across someone else who is also nice and notices how nice you are too. To me, these people can increase traffic to your website in four different ways:

  1. They can simply subscribe to your email list or feed. Yes, it’s only one person, but knowing that they chose to hear more from you is a good sign, and that to me is considered a reward.
  2. They may comment on some of your blog posts. This increases stickiness and promotes conversation. On some blog posts, it’s not the actual post that was written, but the comments after it that make it interesting to read, which may cause other people to join in and/or subscribe too. Sweet.
  3. They can email you directly. If they need help, you give it to them and this increases your trust level and helps them remember YOUR website. He or she will then be more likely to refer to your website to somebody else. If you’re just having a conversation about whatever, who knows – that person may have a blog with thousands of readers. Develop a rapport with this person and you may have found someone who may….
  4. Include a link to your website on their website. This is powerful stuff that could lead to many visitors in short periods of time.

Why does increasing web traffic matter? As you should already know, the more visitors you have to your website, the more potential you have of earning more money. Traffic = potential income.

Example # 1: My Blog at Intheleed.com

Here, I’ve done my best to answer every single email and as many comments as possible to make sure everyone get’s their questions answered. Also, I get a few random customer service emails from people who aren’t so technologically savvy, and I walk them through how to use my eBook and audio guide.

From the beginning, I’ve done all I can to make sure I’m seen as a “nice” guy who goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is happy. I attribute a lot of my success to this, because I found out after holding a poll asking how my customers heard about my eBook, about half of them said it was recommended to them by a friend.

Also, I get a lot of emails saying thanks and I even have a number of people who CC me when they recommend my eBook and/or website to other people. Even though we always hear about people doing bad things in this world, there are actually quite a few people who are wonderful too to are willing to help us out.

Example # 2: The Smart Passive Income Blog

Again, I would say that I’m seen as a nice guy on this blog (I hope). I try to provide helpful and inspiring information to people while doing my best not to “show off” or just boast about how much money I make. I respond to every single email, I read every single comment and respond to those too when needed. I also read some of your blogs and post comments on there when I find something interesting.

Finally, I try to keep the salesman in me at a minimum, because the last thing anyone wants is someone forcing ads and affiliate links in their face. That is not nice.

So how has “being nice” helped me here? Actually, I’ve developed some great relationships with people since starting this blog who have made a big impact on the number of visitors to this site. Let’s take a look at some stats:

This shows the number of people who visited my website each day between December 24th and January 22nd. Notice the two big spikes? Those are times when those very nice people put a link to my site on their blogs.

If you can increase the number of other websites that link to you, you’re golden. Usually, the pattern goes like this:

  • You’re averaging a certain amount of visitors a day. Let’s just say 100 people for this example.
  • Then, a nice person links to your blog, and you see a spike where you have 600 people visit in one day.
  • You plateau for a while, but this time you’re averaging 200 people a day.
  • Then, another nice person links to your blog, and you spike to 1000 people.
  • You plateau averaging 500 readers a day and so on and so on…

This is a basic form of increasing your web traffic. Of course, there are other factors involved such as organic traffic from search engines, but you can definitely see concrete evidence of an increase after getting backlinks to your site. This is why writing guests posts for other blogs is so popular, as it follows the same ideology.

A Personal Thank You!

Pat- I can honestly say that this is my favorite blog. You’ve got a great mix of encouragement and information without the “have a bountiful day” rubbish. I usually read your new posts at about 4:30 AM, I don’t need bountifulness at that point, just coffee and good information to get the brain going.

Oh, also Pat, I wanted to ask for your opinion on this website:

http://www.arethahat.com/

Clearly it’s a microsite made to profit from the popularity of the AWESOME hat Aretha Franklin wore at the inauguration, which I think is smart. On the other hand, the content isn’t that great… I’m of two minds about it.

@Lise, I think it’s a good effort in trying to make money from something that’s a hot topic in the news and the media. This is a technique that is done all the time with affiliate marketing. I can’t really find too many money making techniques on the website other than Google Adsense, which won’t bring in too much money – not enough to spend too much time making that website in my opinion, but I could be wrong. And I agree with you, the content isn’t all that great.

I absolutely agree. My biggest traffic day (although very modest compared to your 800+ day) came after another blog linked to one of my articles.

I will have to redouble my efforts to respond to my (admittedly small number of) comments. I tend to star the emails in gmail while im at work and then forget to respond to them. I’m hoping to promote discussions more at my site and responding to commentors is the best way.

I’m also trying to make my blog more personal like you suggested in an earlier post. Thanks for all of the advice you have provided on your blog.

Wow – that’s a great insight. It’s interesting how supposed ‘old-school’ things like common courtesy and being nice to someone affect our interactions even in a non-face to face place like the internet. I’ll be applying this on my site as well – keep up the good work!

I would that with being responsive more than nice, but I understand your point. Being responsive to your readers will encourage them to come back and contribute more, as well as tell other people about your site. It’s good karma and it works. I would also recommend helping others out. It’s good practice and can come around to you in the end.

So far, two blogs have linked to me on their site, and that is a huge reward for me, seeing that my blog was only made less than a month ago.

I always try to blog daily (excluding Sundays), providing quality content, replying to comments, answering any questions sent my way, and actively contributing to blogs. All this has helped, and I can’t thank my readers enough!

I got a big insight about being nice from a friend of mine recently…he’s one of these online millionaires, and he said the most important thing that contributed to his success was a little book he read when he was 11, which was a book about “savoir vivre”, and in it, the act of being kind and good natured are some of the traits that 90% of the richest people share.

Thanks for reminding me of its importance!

Hi Pat,
Another great post, I think that has to do with giving people what they want and in return they would bend over backwards to help you in return. I remember my first email from you and I was actually surprise you email me back. I read a good book by dale carnegie called how to win friends and influnce people.

The principals mentioned in the book has transform the way I do things online and offline for example when I had a recent job interview I look at it from the employer point of view and look for ways that I can help the company and not just think about myself in return.

This book is so good that I order his other books and looking forward to implement that tactics on my website and in my personal.

Thanks for the great post.
