How to Earn More Money Working 9 to 5 Versus Working For Yourself Online

Here’s a quick two and a half minute YouTube video which explains why it’s so much easier to earn more money working for yourself online, versus working for someone else.

Think about it.

    Great video Pat!

The message that is carried in that video is so true. Having your own online business does increase the posibilities you have to earn more money.

    Internet really is mind-blowing.

Whenever i tell people that i make $xxxx from working online the number one reaction is: “How is that possible!”.
My usual answer is : “Nah, i am just kiddin!” , cause i am too freaking lazy to explain the 1on1s on internet marketing to someone who has no basic knowledge about it and seems to have a limited perception of reality.

Pat, you forgot one IMPORTANT point about working for yourself!

You can wear whatever clothes you like! *thumb up for the yellow shorts*

Looking forward to your podcasts, hope they will be released soon.

    regards,
    Pete

PS: Is it only me or is the “Sphinn-Link” still wrong

    • Reply Pat on April 14th, 2010 at 9:50 am

Yeah Pete, some people just don’t understand the possibilities, which is quite unfortunately. I’m sure most everyone who visits this blog though knows that making a living online is really possible.

And yep! We can work in whatever clothes we want! Although, I still sometimes change out of my PJs before I get to work at home because it helps my mind shift gears.

And the yellow shorts…LOL. Those are my Cal Basketball shorts. I had just gotten home from the gym when I shot the video.

      Cheers Pete!

    Pat,

Didn’t you once say your conversions/sales started to go up when you actually INCREASED the price of your eBook?

    • Reply Pat on April 14th, 2010 at 9:51 am

Yep! It showed that the book had more value and so more people ended up purchasing it, even at the higher price point. There’s a line of value versus overpriced, and so some experimentation has to be done in order to maximize profits.

Hi Pat, the video is also blocked for me at work so I’m going to have to wait until I get home to watch it like Moon above. However, the title of this post and the first paragraph don’t agree with each other. The title makes it sound like it’s better to work 9 to 5 and the paragraph states it’s easier to make money working for yourself. I’m a bit confused; however, maybe the video justifies it? Anyway, can’t wait to watch it when I get home!

    Hi! Pat!

I’m a subscriber and lurker till now! I enjoy reading your blog and find it very inspiring.

But, when you post a video it takes ages to watch from my end because of poor internet download speed in my area. That is why I always thought it would be great if bloggers also provide transcripts of their videos – not to mention the SEO benefits thereof.

Anyway, downloading the video from youtube now….

    • Reply Pat on April 14th, 2010 at 5:05 pm

      Hey Carey,

Sorry about that, I totally understand what you mean. Luckily, this video is only 2 minutes long, so it won’t be as long as some of the others I have on the site. If I do provide videos later that provide more content, I’ll definitely put up a transcript of some kind.

      Thanks!

Hey Pat, Love the video. I like how you went outside of the box for the title. “How earn more money working 9 to 5 Versus Working for Yourself Online” this is a great eye catching title. I had to do a double read at first when I saw the title.
Great information in the video. You are right there are many opportunities to make a living from online income.

    Great video…loved the rapid takes.

The beauty in your video post was demonstrating the limitations of the 9to5 job. It’s easy to forget about the glass ceiling a typical career places on you when you’re getting a paycheck every pay period.

You really made an impression on me that with the right attitude and some motivation, the possibilities to be happy making money are endless.

Keep up the great video posts. Also, I can’t wait for some podcasts to show up on your website soon! I’ll keep checking in!

    • Reply Pat on April 15th, 2010 at 11:43 pm

Thanks Mike! I’m glad you got exactly what I was trying to convey, which was the limitations of the 9 to 5 job like you mentioned.

  • Reply Brian on April 14th, 2010 at 6:54 pm

Great video Pat…it really is a whole new mindset. The title was a bit misleading though, I had to hear the inflection when you said it to know online was better.

Of course I have been reading for awhile so I already knew the outcome but it threw me off. I would be interested to see if that helps or hurts the views on YouTube.

    Good Luck!

    • Reply Pat on April 15th, 2010 at 11:45 pm

Thanks Brian – the title was meant to be compelling, and a little ironic as well. The views on YouTube are going fairly strong so far – almost 850 in about two days, that’s not bad! I think, hehe!

  • Reply Sid Savara on April 14th, 2010 at 8:23 pm

    Hey Pat,

Happy to see the iPhone has changed your life – and I’m sure as a result, has enriched your tweets ;)

I think ultimately what I like most about working online is that every action is a risk, with some potential for return – and I can track and (assuming it wasn’t a huge faux pas) rollback from the risk such as changing copy, trying a different tact, trying video, etc

One interesting thing I’ve been playing with is Google Web Optimizer for my sign up page for my ebook – mostly just for fun, but I’m amazed how changing *one word* in the headline can have a 20-30% difference in conversions. I think it’s likely that the small changes affect whether people care enough to continue reading the copy

I am thinking of testing later with some utterly ridiculous headlines like “Sid Brings Home The Bacon.” I am genuinely curious to see – will it help conversion? I have a hunch that something totally out of left field would probably convert way better than what I have going now – though I am a bit scared to try ;)

    • Reply Pat on April 15th, 2010 at 11:47 pm

Yeah, it’s totally true that one word can make all the difference in the world. That’s why I always say to test and keep testing, and never stop! I’d be interested in hearing how your “different” headlines work out for you. I might try something in a newsletter sometime soon.

Thanks for the awesome comment Sid. Cheers bud!

Good post Pat, cheers. Nice shorts by the way ;)

I have a question that will probably seem a little random – what plugin do you use for embedding videos in WordPress? I’ve been hunting around for one that will embed videos even via RSS through Feedburner – so you can actually watch them via RSS on the iPhone, but so far I haven’t found anything…..

    • Reply Pat on April 15th, 2010 at 11:49 pm

Those are my yellow Cal shorts. Gotta sport the Alma Mater!

For the videos, do you mean on the blog posts, or on my video page? On the video page, I use “TubePress”, and in the blog posts, I don’t use any at all. In fact, I pull the code from YouTube (the embed code), and then copy paste it into the html portion of my blog post. It seems to do the job, and it doesn’t take very long.

      Hope that helps!

  • Reply Ivan Walsh on April 15th, 2010 at 6:52 am

    Hi Pat,

    Two more suggestions:

#1: don’t follow the news. If everyone is writing about the ipad, the market will get saturated very quickly so look elsewhere, for example, into similar products such as the Kindle.

#2: before you start a site, buy the domain etc., setup a sub-domain e.g., kindle.yoursite.com, setup a blog and see if there is interest in the topic. Give it 4-8 weeks min and wait for the ‘novelty’ to wear off.

If you’re going to do this, you need to think long-term.

    • Reply Pat on April 15th, 2010 at 11:51 pm

Ivan, those are all great tips. We should always think about the long-term, however we shouldn’t let the long-term stop us from taking action now and just getting things done! Remember, things don’t need to be perfect!

      :)

I really appreciate the message that comes across in your video! There are seldom reasons to work for someone else when you can work for yourself!

I wanted to let you and your subscribers know about a website I found that lets you save and earn money for shopping online! Go to http://www.ShoppingPayday.com to download your free toolbar, then every time you shop online you earn points which you redeem for cash! You also have the option to tell your friends about this free opportunity and earn more points when they download their toolbar!

Like you say up front, passive income is not a “get rich quick” scheme, and neither is this website. However, it provides some mailbox money to look forward to each week, and it is simple and free so you can’t really go wrong.

Thanks for maintaining a great blog!

    Hi Pat,

You are just so cool! I love this video. I run an association for self-employed communication professionals and lots of our new members have just been laid off from the 9-5. They initially “resort” to working for themselves until they can get another job. I’m always telling them what a bad idea that is. Now I can just send them to this video – it’s soooo true how much more control and – dare I say it – fun you can have by working for yourself.

I send my readers over to you blog all the time. Love the fresh insight. Thanks for sharing your journey.
