Do You Think of Money Like This? – My 9 to 5 Disease

Hi, my name is Pat, and I have a problem. Actually, let me correct myself – I had a problem. Do you ever think about the money you spend, no matter when or where, as hours of work down the drain? When I was working 9 to 5, this was a huge problem for me.

Every time I’d spend money, I would calculate in my head how many hours of work it actually took to make that money, and usually I’d end up with a stomach ache or just plain depressed. For example, when I bought my iMac computer, I calculated that it would take me about 15 days of work to cover the costs after taxes. That’s half an entire month dedicated just for my computer. Then I’d think about how that would impact the rest of my budget and how I could possibly work overtime to make up some days – it was terrible. I literally got sick to my stomach. I was too worried about how much time I spent to even enjoy my new purchase.

I did help save a lot of money, but looking back I may have saved too much, if there is such a thing. I remember not doing things I wanted to do, such as play golf, go out to clubs, take road trips and go to the movies because I would keep thinking about how much work time it cost me. I missed out on a lot of fun opportunities and experiences.

Time to Money Relationship with a Passive Income

Since I’ve started making money passively online, I no longer have this time to money relation problem. That is the beauty of making money online using an automated system, which I spoke about in a previous post. Traditionally, we are all familiar with this way of earning an income:

Without time, there is no income. This is why I was so anal about time when it came to spending money. Now, let’s look at the passive income model of making money. The equation is quite simple, when put in an automated system:

Time is spent creating the product, but once that product is created, no more time is needed in order to generate an income.

If you’re working 9 to 5, maybe you don’t have the same problem as I did. I tend to overthink a lot of things (as my fiancee would most likely agree), but I found that I no longer have the stress or worries about spending money as I did before, now that I’m making a passive income.

Again, you probably know there’s a whole lot of other reasons besides this to find an automatic passive income stream – but this is one that has personally made a great impact on my life since escaping the 9 to 5.

What’s to Come

I have a few interesting posts coming up, so keep coming by for what’s soon to come:

  • The One thing I Did to Increase my Earnings by 20% – in 5 minutes: yes, it may seem like a crazy sales pitch, but I really did spend 5 minutes doing something that increased my earnings over 20%. I’ll show you exactly what I did.
  • The Power of Affiliate Programs: how you can earn money passively by selling other people’s products, and also how your product can become viral.
  • The $10,000 mistake I made that you should avoid: Sad….
  • My Work at Home Health Insurance Plan: I met one of the goals I made for this month and found a health insurance plan. I’ll show you exactly how I did this.
  • How I’m Using Google Optimizer with a WordPress Plugin to Increase My Earnings: I’m running experiments on my sales page, which could lead to even more sales. Again, I’ll give you my results and comparisons.

To All of The Readers

I just wanted to say…you rule.

    Pat,
I used to do the same thing. It was discouraging to count up the hours worked. Now, it’s more like, oh, that was paid for by an ebook sale … or a day’s residuals on eHow… Similar concept, but it still feels better!

Yes, it definitely feels better. It wasn’t about the money, it was about the time for me =)

Even though I work for a salary, I find myself calculating how many hours specific purchases cost. I thought I was the only one who did that. While still depressing, I am glad I am not alone. Looking forward to your next few posts my friend. Truly inspiring stuff.

I don’t really think of how much time I have to work to make up for a purchase. I do on the other hand think about how much money I made while taking a vacation day or using the washroom while at work. It’s much more fun that way!
