All right. Now here's today's question from Tina.
Tina: Hi Pat. My name is Tina and I have a question, which asked to an answer you gave in Episode 802. You recommended that if we want to inspire or teach others—I believe marketing—but if we do not have results ourselves yet, then we go with a “follow my journey” approach, and I love that. However, I'm worried that sharing screenshots of Facebook ads, the products and so on, will allow people to copy. On the one hand, I really want to share everything, because I know it can sell this, but on the other hand I do not want people to copy me. What do you suggest? How much should I reveal when blogging about my journey? Pat Flynn: Hey Tina. Thank you so much for the question. I appreciate this and I thank you for referencing one of my previous episodes, 802. Now the big question that you asked was, “How do I do this without having people copy me?” I think the biggest thing about this strategy of sharing your progress along something within a niche, how you are learning, how you are growing, the things that you are picking up along the way that you're sharing with others—this is something that I did with SmartPassiveIncome.com and even with InTheLeed.com and GreenExamAcademy.com (both the same website, two different urls). I was sharing my journey along the studying path to pass that exam, and that helped a lot of other people too, because it helped them realize that I was just like them, just a few steps ahead. And because of that, even when the United States Green Building Council, the company that actually administers this exam, when they came out with their own study guide, people still wanted to learn from me because I shared my journey and they saw themselves in me, which is the big idea about this.
The biggest question that you asked was, “How do I stop people from copying?” The thing is, if you do it and you share personal thoughts and you share your emotions and you share your experience with it and the things that you pick up along the way, nobody can copy you. You are 100 percent original and nobody is going to be like you. Yes, you might pick up things and inspiration from other people, but that doesn't mean it's not yours. Obviously, don't copy or don't steal things, but what I mean is the way that you do it and your approach—that's your voice, that's your method and if somebody else were to do that too, that's their method. And yes, you might inspire them to do that—they're not going to copy you because nobody can. If you put your own experiences, your own stories, and your own case studies in there—this is why I love to share my income reports and the wins and the fails that I have along the way because nobody can copy that. Yes, they can copy my strategies, but they're never going to have the exact same experience as me. They might do better, and that's the goal. I would actually want my audience to do better than me and when you take that approach, the love and the support that you have for your audience is there and then it is reciprocated. They will love and support you back.
How much should you reveal? You should reveal as much as you're comfortable revealing, Tina. I try to push people a little bit to go a little bit over their comfort zone. Obviously, you don't have to share everything, and if it's something that common sense says not to share, then don't share that. But sharing a little bit beyond your comfort zone is crucial, I think, because it shows that you are willing to put yourself out there for your audience to help show them the way, to give them an example, and in return you're going to get a lot of support and love, too.
