And here's today's question from Jackie.
Jackie: Hey Pat, this is Jackie Bolen and I have a question for you about PageRank. For example, one of my websites FreedomThroughPassiveIncome.com has a PageRank of zero and it's been around for quite a while. It has lots of content on it and it has a decent number of back links. I'm just wondering what I'm doing wrong and how I can improve the PageRank. Thank you very much.
Pat Flynn: Hey Jackie. Thank you so much for the question. It's interesting because over the years, PageRank has actually become less and less important. So if there's one thing I can tell you right now, it is literally to not even worry about it. You're not doing anything wrong. Google updates PageRank very, very slowly. Sometimes just a couple times a year. Your PageRank may actually be something much higher, they just haven't reflected that. Again, it's nothing to worry about. Literally, just keep moving forward, keep doing what you're doing, keep providing value. When you do that, over time, it's just going to improve anyway.
Really, the PageRank … That doesn't really help at all. What helps is building relationships, creating unique content, and the byproduct of that is seeing all these kinds of numbers go up. The same thing goes for your Alexa ranking, your PageRank and Authority and just all that stuff. Just focus on delivering value, deliver unique content, and things will happen as a byproduct of that. Neil Patel said, “Just write great stuff, the search engines will catch up.” That's what I recommend you do.
Super short episode to start off the week and I hope a lot of you take into account the fact that a lot of us worry about things that maybe we shouldn't have to worry about, because when it comes down to it, it's not actually going to move our business one way or another. What is going to move our business is everything I just mentioned. Providing value, understanding the pains and the struggles of your target audience, and delivering stuff in a way that they haven't seen it before. Creating unique value. That's what it's all about.
So Jackie, thank you so much for the question. I appreciate it. We're going to send you an AskPat t-shirt for having your question featured here on the show. This might be a record actually for the shortest episode of AskPat but hopefully, one that is very useful for you. I know a lot of you might be like, “Wow, I needed to hear this because I'm actually wasting my time thinking about things I don't need to think about.” Actually, it's just a form of procrastination. We often look at things like this when we get uncomfortable with certain things or we try to do something new and then we go back to just, “Well, what's that one thing that's going to help change everything?” Well, not this. I already told you what the answer is, you know what to do.
Again, Jackie, thank you so much. We'll send you an AskPat t-shirt. Everybody else out there who has a question you'd like potentially featured here on the show, just head on over to AskPat.com, you can ask it right there on that page. Thank you so much. I appreciate you and here's a quote from one of my favorite people, Gary Vaynerchuk who I had the pleasure of meeting almost exactly a month ago. Gary Vaynerchuk said, “I hate how many people think glass half empty when their glass is really 4/5 full. I'm grateful when I have one drop in the glass because I know exactly what to do with it.”
Cheers, take care, and I'll see you in the next episode of AskPat. Bye.
