AskPat 802 Episode Transcript
Pat Flynn: Hey, what's up everybody? Pat Flynn here and welcome to Episode 802 of AskPat. Thank you so much for joining me today. As always, I'm here to help you by answering your online business questions five days a week.
We have a great question today from George over in the Philippines, but before we get to that, I do want to thank today's sponsor, which is FreshBooks, one of my favorite companies because they serve millions of small businesses, including my own, with helping us manage our business finances, from our income to our expenses and especially our invoicing. Which is really cool, because in less than 30 seconds you can send a professional-looking invoice to anybody who you are billing. Not only that, they help you understand and keep track of who is paid, who is not paid, but also who has opened and not opened those invoices that you've sent out, which is really handy for the followup process, so you can get paid, which is obviously, really important if you want to run a business. Check them out for free for 30 days by going to FreshBooks.com/AskPat and make sure you enter “AskPat” in the how did you hear about us section, FreshBooks.com/AskPat.
All right now, here's today's question from George.
George: Hi Pat, my name is George from the Philippines. I've been following your blog in about a year now. I found your blog very, very useful and very, very informative. Thank you for your free trainings. My problem is I want to start a website. My target market is for those Filipinos, aspiring Filipinos who want to make money in affiliate marketing. My problem is I don't have any result yet in affiliate marketing. I don't have any income generated yet in affiliate marketing. My problem is how can I pursue them, how can I inspire them to follow me, follow my blog if they don't saw any result from me? They don't saw any income that I generated in affiliate marketing. How can I pursue them? How can I inspire them to start in affiliate marketing? Thank you for your response Pat, really, I appreciate that.
Pat Flynn: Hey George, thank you so much for the question. As you may know, I'm actually half Filipino myself, so Filipino pride and I'm super stoked that you're there in the Philippines, trying to help out our fellow Filipino brothers and sisters over there. I'm so thankful as well that you haven't yet started this process because you're worried about the fact that well, you don't have these results to share, so how can you inspire people if you have yet to have results yourself? I think that's a very, very good concern. It means you're coming from a place of heart and you're not doing what many people do, which is pretending to be like somebody who is successful to help inspire others and share with others to earn commissions yourself and doing that whole thing a lot of people have gotten started in the how to make money online space without having yet made any money online. When you do that, when you come from a place of fake or pretend, or just false numbers, anything like that, it's never going to work out, that's for sure.
For me, when I started online, I had results from an existing online business. That really helped me stand out, because a lot of the people in my space didn't have that sort of proof of what they were teaching. It's really, really important that you get that proof, George. There's two options for you that I want to share. Number one is while you don't have results yet, so get those results. Go out there and begin building your affiliate marketing business and then you can be able to share these things from a place of truth and from a place of serving. That way you'll stand out immediately from everybody else who's trying to do this, because you'll have had your own results. Use that as motivation, the fact that will immediately get results first before you share this stuff.
I know and I can tell you have the passion for wanting to serve others and help inspire others to become affiliate marketers and generate an income that way, which I still feel affiliate marketing is one of the most underutilized strategies out there for starting a business or generating an income or diversifying or online income portfolio. I still love affiliate marketing. I still recommend people do it. I'm totally with you. I want to help others do the same thing, but use that as motivation. The fact that you can't get to that step yet until you have your results. That's approach number one and that's actually what I would recommend, because that's going to fire you up and also give you proof that well, if it doesn't work out, George, you can't get results, then that shows well, you can't yet teach it.
Approach number two is an approach that many people have taken in all different niches and that is the, “Hey, come follow my process in my beginning journeys” blog or approach. That is, in other words, telling people upfront that you are on this journey, that you have yet to get results, being very honest with them, which is one, going to help you build trust with your audience, but secondly, people are going to be really interested in your process and whether or not this actually works out for you. If it does, man, that's going to open up a ton of doors for you like it did for me when I started building niche sites and people started to see that those were actually becoming successful. it could be the same for you.
You can show people that, “Hey, I'm figuring this out and you can come figure this out along with me. Come take the journey with me. I'm going to share every single thing that I learn, all my mistakes, everything that's happening,” and I will say that this works out very well. A lot of people, in many niches, like I said, have done this. People who are getting out of debt, for example, they have thousands of followers and they started when they were in debt. Why would a person follow a person who's in debt when trying to get out of debt themselves? It's because they are there with them, doing it along with them. Somebody is just a couple of steps ahead versus 10 or 12 or 20 steps ahead. When somebody is just a couple of steps ahead of you, you are more likely to follow them, because they had just…were on the same trail as you are. That's another approach. Again, I want to say that you have to be completely honest, no matter which approach that you take, because it takes a lot of work to build that audience and to build that trust and to build that e-mail list and to get to a point where people will then follow your direction, follow your recommendations, but it only takes a few moments to lose all of that trust.
No matter what approach you take, always be honest with your audience. I will say that finally with option number two there, with the sharing the journey along the way, it's difficult, because not only are you trying to build this audience and show the process along the way, but you're also trying to be successful with the thing that you're teaching too and the thing that you're trying to get to the point to which you can then share with others. It's like twice as much work. It's up to you, George, but again, I'm thankful that you asked this question. I do know that you're going to come at it with an honest approach and I want to wish you all the best! Cheers! Thank you so much again, George, for the question and I will be sending you an AskPat T-shirt for having a question featured here on the show, so you'll hear from my executive assistant Jessica the next few weeks or so. We will collect your information and we will send it your way. Thanks again.
