AskPat 789 Episode Transcript
Pat Flynn: Hey, what's up, everybody? Pat Flynn here, and welcome to Episode 789 of AskPat. Thank you so much for joining me today. As always, I'm here to help you by answering your online business questions, five days a week.
All right, now here's today's question from Kit.
Kit: Hi Pat. My name's Kit. I'm inspired by your writings and podcasts to move forward with my own business idea. I took your advice, and I hit the streets talking to anyone and friends so I could validate my idea. As a result, I've got my first customer. I'm a newbie at having a blog, and then I don't have a company name yet. My question is can I start a blog site without having first settled on a business name? Thanks for your help.
Pat Flynn: Hey, Kit. Thank you so much for the question. I appreciate it, and thank you even more for following my advice and taking action and going out there and talking to people about it. It's so cool that you've gotten your first customer. I hope that you are motivated by doing so. To answer your question really quickly, and then I'll get into a few more things there, yeah, you can set up a site before picking a business name. Even in my history, when I started out, I built a website to help people pass and examine in the architecture industry. I didn't even form a business until several months later once I started to get some sales and stuff.
Yeah, you can do that, that way you can begin making sales. You can begin collecting email addresses and whatnot. The business name is what you were talking about. Now obviously when you set up a website and/or blog, you're going to have to come up with a domain name for that, and a name that people can sort of, that will be your brand. The business name can be different from the brand. For example, my business name when I started out was In The LEED, which was for L-E-E-D, which stood for the exam that I was teaching.
That later changed to www.GreenExamAcademy.com after I figured out that, or actually I was told that I couldn't use “LEED” in the domain name because of trademark issues. That's one thing to keep in mind, but my business name is Flynndustries, LLC. Flynn because that's my last name, but my website is www.SmartPassiveIncome.com, and there's a couple other business under the Flynndustries umbrellas as well.
But of course, when you're starting a site, you've got to pick a domain name and a brand. That helps you with your design and kind of your approach. There's a lot that goes into that, but in terms of getting a site up and settling on a business name, informing a business structure, that's not even necessarily needed up front, but definitely should be something you should look forward to. It sounds like you're on the right track, so make it happen.
Yeah, in terms of getting your site up and running, a lot of you know I recommend Bluehost for getting started. Super easy to get set up, and one-click WordPress install so you can get that going. You can checkout Bluehost through my affiliate link at www.AskPat.com/bluehost. That'll help you get set up with your WordPress site. Super easy, you can even use a theme like the SPI Pro Theme if you wanted to, or any number of themes out there, which is really cool about WordPress. You can change the theme any time.
Lastly about changing things, even if you were to settle on a business name now or even a blog domain name or a brand name, and at some point, you just realize that wasn't the right one, well guess what? You can always change it. That's the cool thing. Yeah, Kit, congratulations. Keep up the great work. Thank you for validating the process of validating your business. You got this, and I look froward to hearing about how it all goes after this.
Thank you so much. I want to send you an AskPat T-shirt for having your question featured here on the show. For those of you listening, if you have a question that you'd like potentially featured here on the show as well, just head on over to www.AskPat.com, and you can ask right there on that page.
Thank you so much, and here's a quote to finish off the day and the week from Hannibal. That is, “We will either find a way or make one.” Make it happen, guys. Thanks, and I'll see you in the next episode. Bye.
