You may know John Lee Dumas pretty well already. He’s a good pal, and he’s been on the SPI Podcast a number of times (SPI Podcast Sessions 77, 97, and 223). But, if you aren’t familiar, he’s the podcast machine over at Entrepreneur On Fire. And last year he wrote The Freedom Journal, which he successfully created and launched on Kickstarter, earning him nearly half a million dollars. Awesome!
The Mastery Journal is his new project, and I am so excited for it. I think what he’s doing with these journals is really smart: creating a series of practical, hands-on, empowering journals to help you achieve your goals (The Freedom Journal), and master the skills you’ve used to reach your goals (The Mastery Journal) so you can continue leveling up to move onto the next amazing thing.

As I mentioned before, John is a great friend, and I love supporting my friends. That’s partially why I am recommending The Mastery Journal. But the other reason, and the most important reason, is that I love the idea of this journal to help with our focus, discipline, and productivity in the new year. It’s a great way to start fresh!
What I really love about The Mastery Journal is that it’s extremely easy to follow along. Like all good journals out there, it’s not just a blank “here you go, you figure it out” type of thing. The first several pages are easy to read material that gets you primed for what this journal can do for you. Then it gives you specific sample journal entries for things like crushing your morning routine, the pomodoro routine, and staying focused on a task. I also like the charts that you can create with The Mastery Journal. There’s also a scoring component to the journal. You can give yourself specific points for improvement, a thing I love because, for me, numbers and keeping track and improving on those is a huge part of my own drive for betterment.
There are also FAQs in various sections that address some of the questions I had myself when I was going through the book. So, not only is it extremely helpful in improving our skills, but it’s easy to use as well!
The Mastery Journal is a book that will definitely help you obtain more clarity in what you do, and help you get a lot more done in a shorter period of time. As entrepreneurs, this is something we all strive for.
John’s a workhorse when it comes to what he does. And this book, I believe, is his way of guiding us toward our own version of being a productive, effective workhorse, enabling us to put in the work where it needs to be put to get the results we want. But done in a smart way that won’t have us working eighteen hour days.
Oh, and did I mention also that The Mastery Journal keeps track of your progress along the way? It does, and it’s pretty darn cool.
So, is this book for you? I think so! It really is for anyone who needs help focusing, and anyone who needs help staying more disciplined with their work. That’s something I believe we can all benefit from.
