Pivot (Amazon link) was first recommended to me by my team and, coincidentally, I actually met Jenny on a recent trip to New York. In fact, I didn’t even know it was the same Jenny until she mentioned her book. Ha! But once I started chatting with her, I knew that I had to read Pivot. She’s an amazing and bright human who is just full of positive energy. I loved chatting with her; I loved her book for what it said about decision making, and it’s why I’m recommending it to you. One thing I really enjoyed about Pivot is that it’s beautifully organized and well-structured. She tackles a huge topic (career decision, life-changing decisions) and puts it into simple, easy-to-follow terms. It’s handled brilliantly. The book is organized into various stages that represent exactly how to know where you’re at, and where you should be.

Stage 1 is called Plant, which is about understanding not only what makes you happy and what your strengths are, but it goes into how to build a foundation for that as well.
Stage 2 is called Scan, which dives into a lot of the limiting beliefs that that can stop us from making the right decisions. Jenny also helps us learn how to listen to ourselves and our environment to, as she says, “bridge the gap.”
Stage 3, which is my favorite—partly because it has a flying analogy like my book, Will It Fly?—is called Pilot, which leads into Stage 4, Launch, and then into Stage 5, Lead.
Jenny has a fascinating and unique perspective on careers. She doesn’t view them as linear, which is something we often do. Rather than thinking of our careers as “this thing needs to happen, then this thing, which leads to this thing,” Jenny focuses on how our careers can be more project-based. I resonate with this because my team and I use agile project management in the way we work, and I see a lot of that in terms of how Jenny applies it into our lives. Everything she writes is relevant and useful, without the fluff, but I can also definitely see and feel her personality come through.
She’s a self-proclaimed organizer of people’s brains, and this book is a perfect representation of that. It’s perfect for anyone who feels lost or needs some confirmation about the direction they are taking in their career and in life. I feel like that’s a topic we can all benefit from.
So if you’re looking for a little direction in your life, and want to understand how to better make a pivot, this book is for you.
