My husband just taught me how to set up blogs on blogger. These 3 tips have been so helpful because it does take a lot of commitment to keep the blog going. I found this out the hard way and needed to start writing out goals everyday. I am definately coming back to check out your other tips. Thanks for the information.

Good points, Pat. Once you started blogging you only find out on your way what all is involved and that it is not done with writing the posts. However, it’s also exiting what you are getting back. With my blog still being in the baby shoes, I am still exited about every new subscriber and comment and when the statistic goes up!
Thinking of that, a blog is a little bit like a baby – more work than you thought, but you are also getting back quite a lot!

I can’t tell you the number of ABANDONED blogs that come up on any given topic when searched on the net. It seems lots of people start out with an idea and then for one reason or another let it fizzle out. The three points you make about commitment, uniqueness, and being worthwhile are definitely key factors to the success of a blog.

Great post. Commitment is the big one. I have many people ask me how I post to three blogs daily (many multiple posts per day) . . . You get in a groove I tell them.

It is easy to say you want to do it, but actually doing it is another story. My first blog will be a year old this week and I have missed only three or four days– usually because of being really under the weather– like I was the other day.

I have actually told one person not to try blogging, but to do a one time write-up website. Persistance is a requirement in the act of committing he just can’t meet.

Bottomline, a blog isn’t for everyone . . .

Nice post! For the record, if I can manage to keep it to 250 words I can get a blog post out in an hour. But, I have the luxury of a topic that can be very formulaic (computer programming). For a more thoughtful blog post or a real original screen-cast I may spend closer to the 2-3 hours.

As a tip – keeping in mind that you need to blog at least three times a week and probably more like 5 try to start following a system where you break up the more thoughtful posts with posts that your users will still like but do not require so much time: ie: commenting on other blog posts your audience may like, top 10 lists, links to other websites, inviting “guest bloggers” to submit work.

Anyway, Pat thanks for the post and I know for myself that the advice you are giving works. I just looked at the sales from my e-book which is essentially based on this type of system (from Internet Business Mastery as well as your ebook series) and I can see that I added $6500 to my business so far.

So, you can make money at blogging.

Hi Vanessa, thanks for your comment, and welcome! I definitely recommend using WordPress (http://www.wordpress.org) as your blogging platform. In addition, I’d buy a domain name and some hosting (I use http://www.bluehost.com), which has a really easy WordPress install already built in. You can literally start blogging within minutes.

Congrats on your recent intheleed makeover. The new site looks really good. I think people are often amazed that someone can make a living from writing. So often we are told of the starving artist that we make that same assumption about bloggers. Some do extremely well. Some do very well. Some toil along for months with few visitors, no income and lots of frustrations.

I think the key is
1) Identifying why you are unique. You mentioned that.
2) Having a system in place to produce quality content
3) Having a system in place to produce targeted visitors

Without all three of those you will struggle in any business. As you grow optimize the system (such as your recent makeover)… and never forget to test test test.

Eagerly awaiting to see how your makeover impacted your earnings
