This backlinking strategy is modeled after Joseph Archibald’s strategy he generously shared free to the public in his 40 Day Challenge on the Warrior Forum. He was able to rank a fairly competitive niche in the top 5 in Google within 40 days.
(For everyone’s convenience, he has also sinsce published The 40 Day Challenge eBook, which is a lot easier to read than the 1200+ posts on the Warrior Forum. Check out his sample chapter here.)
He’s taken it upon himself to be totally active here on SPI and respond to everyone’s questions and concerns about the backlinking strategy on my blog, which just shows what kind of guy he is. If you use this strategy, be sure to thank Joseph sometime.
***Note: This strategy still works even after Google’s latest Panda Update.
I’ve revealed my niche site backlinking strategy before, but never in this much detail.
Ever since the niche site I created for the Niche Site Duel started to rapidly climb the ranks of Google, eventually landing on the number one position, people have been asking me for more detail about my strategy and the software and tools that I’ve been using to help.
There are several strategies one can use to rank higher in the search engines and the one I’m going to explain is just one of them.
Please note that links to software and tools within this blog post are affiliate links which I do receive financial gain from if purchases are made from them.
Furthermore, the principles of this strategy can be done for absolutely free without having to buy any software or tools. I use the software to help and speed things up.
Don’t spend money on anything you see online unless you can afford it and you feel it will pay you back in the future.
Overview
I’d like to start by sharing an overview of the process with you so you can see how it all works as a whole. Later in this post, I’ll get into detail about the individual parts.
(Click to watch Backlinking Strategy & Process Overview on YouTube)
To summarize what I talk about in the video, the backlinking strategy I’m using involves two layers of backlinks – the anchor layer, which are links that you create which link directly to your niche site, and the indirect layer, which are links that you create which link directly to your anchor layer.
The Anchor Layer
The anchor layer consists of a few parts, again, which link directly to your niche site.
These include:
- Top Article Directory Submissions
- New Blogs
- Web 2.0 Properties
Links from Blog Blueprint(Blog Blueprint hasn’t been performing as well as it used to. It’s not vital if this part of the strategy is taken out)Updated 12/03/11 - Direct Links from BuildMyRank (BMR is a BB replacement that has been working much much better for my sites lately! You get 10 links for free, so try it out! Most of the other niche site creators I know use BMR now as well as a primary link resource.)- Updated 3/20/12 – As of this date, BMR articles have apparently been starting to be de-indexed from Google, so creating backlinks using this tool would be a waste of time, at least for now. The best advice is to not use blog networks to drive links back to your site and continue with the other portions of this backlinking strategy, and to diversify the links coming to your site as much as possible.
Later in this post when I talk about how this all happens, I’ll get into what exactly is involved with each of these 4 parts in the anchor layer – what directories I submit to, what “new blogs” is, etc.
The Indirect Layer
The indirect layer is a way to create massive amounts of backlinks which link directly to the anchor properties we setup in the anchor layer. These links do not point directly to your niche site.
The indirect layer consists of:
- Mass Article Submissions using Unique Article Wizard
- Mass Bookmarking Submissions
The reason that you don’t want to link directly to your niche site is because you’re creating hundreds of backlinks at a time and if you point all of them to your niche site, it will look totally unnatural and your young site won’t be able to handle all of it without raising a red flag. When you point these links to your anchors, because your anchor sites are on high ranking, totally populated websites, they’ll be able to handle the wave/influx of links but at the same time pass or feed that SEO power generated from all of those links into your niche site. Your anchor properties act as a shield while at the same time allow you to get the SEO benefit from the indirect layer.
Yes, I know – it sounds kind of wacky. When I first heard this strategy it really didn’t make sense to me, but after implementing the strategies myself the results are very clear.
The Streamlined Process
Now that you have a general understanding of the what, I’m going to show you the how.
I think the best way to do this is to actually just walk you through the process from start to finish and show you how I can create all of these backlinks from a single unique article.
Step 1: Write an Original Article Related to Your Niche
Everything in this process begins with writing an original article. Personally, I like to have full control of what’s written and what’s published, so I like to write the articles myself, but there are many people who are comfortable with having a virtual assistant or ghostwriter write the article for them instead.
Either way, it should definitely unique content and should typically be around 350-600 words in length. Although the length isn’t extremely important, it’s smart to stay within this range because it will make your life easier in the later steps of this process.
Lastly, you can choose to post this original article onto your niche site before you move on to the next steps. You could kill two birds with one stone by adding content to your site and following the next steps to help build backlinks as well.
Step 2: Prepare The Article for Spinning
Like I mentioned in the overview video above, spinning an article gives you the ability to quickly create multiple variations of an original article so that you can submit them to various places without worrying about duplicate content penalties and so that you can save tons of time by not having to create brand new content from scratch over and over again to get the same message across.
I talked about article spinning in my previous backlinking post and naturally a lot of people commented about it (currently 174 comments) because it is a widely debatable topic.
Not everyone is comfortable with the idea of spinning an article – using multiple variations of an original article and then submitting those variations to several different locations on the web. Some people view it as spammy and others view it as dangerous too. I totally respect that side of the argument, but let me tell you why I think it’s okay.
(I don’t want this post to turn into some huge debate, but I feel I should tell you why I am okay with this method since this is what I’m showing you how to do.)
First, I don’t view it as spammy because I’m making sure that the content that I submit (even after spinning) is good. Since they are quality articles and I don’t submit different versions of an article to the same location, I feel comfortable knowing that I’m doing what I can to make sure my message gets read in the most places as possible, without using the same exact text over and over again.
Also, think about press releases for a second. Press releases are one single version of an article that gets syndicated to tens of thousands of places on the web. Companies like PRWeb make money doing this for other companies, brands and people. As described on PRWeb’s site:
“We send your news to 35,000 journalists and bloggers, 30,000 websites and hundreds of newspapers including the New York Times, Los Angeles Times and the Chicago Tribune as well as local news outlets across the USA. PRWeb gets your story where it needs to go.”
Several brand name companies and individuals use press releases (the exact same article, not variations) to help spread the word about something. This is exactly what I’m doing when I submit my spun content to various places on the web, although I’m taking it a step further and am not using the same exact content over and over again. I’m using different variations because that’s the only way I can make it happen, at least without penalty.
In my previous post, I think Mark Mason’s comment says it best:
“I hate this spinning discussion. Let’s say Pat has the cure for cancer and he posts it on his blog. Curing cancer is good. So Pat spins articles about curing cancer and posts them everywhere so he can help the most people while playing by the rules that GOOGLE has set.
So what about security guards? Pat’s site rocks. It will help people that are thinking about becoming a security guard. Security guards are a help to society. It’s all good.
So what if Pat “advertises” his site by placing similar content all over the web? It’s not like the web is “full” and Pat is harming someone by taking up too much space.
It seems acceptable for Toyota to place the same add on every TV network and run it over and over. It’s OK for AP to syndicate their content everywhere. Why not Pat.
Not to mention the fact that Pat is only doing this because Google’s algorithms are too poor to tell good content from bad content. I would argue that if Pat Does not do something to rank his site, he is being unfair to all those readers out therebat NEED him but cannot find him.
Failing to properly promote your site when there are people to help profitably is A lot bigger sin than syndicating 47 very similar but different copies of a good article.
If you want to take a stand against someone, get mad at Google. They have an inferior product that relies on backlinks — yet they make Billions of dollars each year from it. That’s the problem, not Pat.
Anyways, I think we’ve beat this to a pulp already – it’s time to show you how it’s done.
In the video below, you’ll see me using a piece of software called The Best Spinner, which is by far the best spinning software available with the biggest bank of user generated synonyms that make the spinning process much faster.
Although there is a “one-button” approach that you can use to spin your articles, I would advise against using that feature because although The Best Spinner is awesome, it’s automated functions aren’t entirely perfect. You’ll see that I take the time to go through each word one-by-one to plug in good synonyms that make sense. Even though this takes some extra time (and like I said preparing an article for spinning is what takes up most of my time in this backlinking strategy), it’s totally worth it when you can just copy and paste spun versions of your articles in all of the later steps.
(Click to watch The Best Spinner – Article Spinning on YouTube)
Is article spinning absolutely necessary in order to make this strategy work. No! But as you will see, it does help to speed things up a bit.
Step 3: Submit to Article Directories
In this step, you’ll be submitting spun versions of your original article to various article marketing directories.
The directories I usually submit to are listed below:
You probably know that many of these top article directories check to make sure that the article is unique before approving and posting it onto their site. EzineArticles, especially, is notorious for this, however I’ve never once had an article denied approval or removed. If you are worried, you can still continue through this process by submitting a version to just one of the article directories.
EzineArticles is the top-choice directory, however it usually takes a while to get your articles approved (several days if you have not yet written 10 articles for their site). If you want an immediate approval, you can submit to GoArticles, which helps because then you don’t have to wait days to utilize the article in this backlinking process.
Here is one version of my article that I spun from the spinning video in step #2, live on GoArticles.com. Don’t forget to add a link directly to your niche site in the author bio / resource section, making sure you have at least one link that is an anchor text that matches your target keyword or keyphrase.
And yes, Pete Chamberlain is my pen name for my niche site and all related articles.
Step 4: Create Your New Blogs and Web 2.0 Properties
At this point you can use spun versions of your original article to create new blogs and web 2.0 properties that all have backlinks pointing to your site. They will be a part of the anchor layer that we talked about in the overview, which means they will contain links that point directly back to your niche site.
New Blogs and Web 2.0 Properties
These are new blogs and web 2.0 sites that you create for free, and the real benefit here is that they are a part of a larger, more powerful and higher ranking domain.
So for example, when you create a free blog at WordPress.com, even though the blog you create will start out as a Page Rank 0 (PR0) website, it’s still a part of the PR9 wordpress.com domain. This same ideology goes for all of the articles you’ve written for article directories too.
Each of the new sites will only require one post, which you can grab from a spun version of your original article (although you could and probably should add a little more (spun) content later – just to give the site more meat.
In addition to the content, you should embed a related video from YouTube (and even a picture too) just to make your page a little more relevant to the topic, and so it looks like it’s lived in a little.
Here is where you can create your free blogs and Web 2.0 Sites (thanks to Joseph for the updated list! - updated 2012):

Again, these only require 1 post (2 or 3 is better) with a link back to your niche site, and after that the only thing you have to do with them is remember the URL so you can link to them in the next step (step #5). I don’t do any cross linking between these sites.
Anchor Text Update for 2012: Also, make sure you vary your anchor text a bit. Meaning, the link from these sites that point back to your main site shouldn’t ALWAYS be using your main keyword. Why? Because it’s unnatural and a good variety of related anchor texts is better. So for example, if your target keyword is “Fly Fishing”, then it’s probably smart to use “Fly Fishing” about half the time (roughly) and then a mix of other keywords like “Fly Fishing Rods”, “Fly Fishing Reels”, “Fly Fishing Techniques”, “Fly Fishing Tips”, etc. for the other half.
Notable Web 2.0 Properties
There are two unique Web 2.0 sites I’d like to mention real quick:
They are free to setup and treated in the exact same manner as the New Blogs, they are just setup a little differently. You can use a (HIGHLY UNIQUE) spun version of your original article for some content, you can add an rss feed from your niche site, some videos, some pictures – there are a lot of cool things you can do with Squidoo and Hubpages. Again, just make sure there’s a least one backlink (with your keyword as the anchor text), pointing back to your niche site for each.
Note about Squidoo and Hubpages (and the reason why they’re separated out): More recently, they’ve been getting more and more strict with the content that is posted on their sites. I would actually write the content on these sites manually if possible, but if you don’t have the time you can test a spun version of your original article, knowing that it may not be approved. This is a warning for you just in case, just remember to think about the end user and what’s actually useful for them. The more “modules” and content you can add on those sites – the better, and the link that can come from those sites can be extremely powerful, if you can land ‘em.
After you have all of the above mentioned sites setup, you don’t need to keep creating more. When you get to this point, you can skip step #4 entirely because they will already be in place and doing their job.
Step 5: Indirect Linking to Your Anchor Sites
In this step, you’ll be creating a load of backlinks that link back to your anchor sites that you’ve created from your article submissions, your new blogs and web 2.0 properties.
Unique Article Wizard
Unique Article Wizard is a tool that I got familiar with a month after starting my niche site and it’s proving to work quite well. Previously, I’ve used Automatic Article Submitter to do mass article submissions, but UAW definitely outperforms AAS in my opinion, simply because I can get a lot more backlinks from it.
That being said, UAW isn’t entirely automatic either, but you can get up to 800-1000 backlinks form a single article, with links to prove it, which is awesome. This is why we use these articles to link to our anchor sites, because 1000s of backlinks to your niche site would definitely be a little much.
Here’s a video explaining how UAW works:
(Click to watch Unique Article Wizard – Massive Backlinks on YouTube)
Social Bookmarking
This is another method you can use to link directly to your anchor sites which will ultimately help boost the authority of your niche site.
There are several different backlinking tools available to help you with this process. One of them, Bookmarking Demon, automates the entire process but I’ve found the software to be really hard to handle, and it’s extremely expensive at $147 a pop. After purchasing it myself (again, I purchased and played around with all of these tools to see what works and what doesn’t so I could report back to you), personally I found that it wasn’t worth that much money to me.
I’d rather use a free tool from SocialMarker.com Social Poster, which really isn’t automated at all (and the initial time you run through it it takes a while because you have to manually sign up for all of the different social bookmarking sites), but it does save a little bit of time.
During my journey with my security guard training niche, social bookmarking was the thing I did the least. If I didn’t have unique article wizard on hand, I probably would have done more of it.
Step 6: Rinse and Repeat
Go back to Step 1.
An Important Final Note
So that’s the bulk of the backlinking strategy, and as you can see there are a lot of parts to it.
The thing is, most of the software and tools I’ve been talking about come with a cost, but I don’t want you to think that you need to purchase any of these things in order to succeed.
You can complete this entire backlinking strategy from the article submissions to the creation of new blogs and web 2.0 properties and social bookmarking without spending a dime. So please, don’t feel like you need to empty your wallet after reading this, I just wanted to show you exactly what I was doing and the tools I’ve been using to help save some time and speed things up a bit.
The tools work, but they aren’t necessary.
I know how much influence I have now that the Smart Passive Income Blog has grown so popular, and with that I accept the responsibility to make sure to never cheat you or tell you that you NEED to spend money on this or that in order to find success. When I created my first online business, the only thing I spent money on was a domain name and hosting package.
In the beginning, I didn’t spend money on a fancy website design, search engine optimization, article spinning software, submitter tools or anything like that. Heck, I didn’t even know those things existing and the only thing I did was publish great content, and I eventually gained a following and things just took off from there.
I am anticipating a number of questions or comments from this post, so please be patient for my response while I catch up on some sleep. It’s has been a long night putting all of this together for you, but I love it. If someone asks a question and you know the answer or have something to say, please don’t be shy.
Cheers!
Update: My buddy Eric over at My4HourWorkWeek.com created a really handy excel file to help you keep track of all of the link building and sites that you create for this specific backlinking strategy. Check it out here!

Created new blogs, got an article into ezinearticles, but still not seeing the links I’d hoped. Guess I shouldn’t have skipped the spinning.
“An” article, as in a single article? As the post indicates, you need to have a bunch of articles in order to see results.
Hey Pat,
Lots of great posts on your blog.
Just curious though, where did Joseph’s website go? It looks like it is parked? If he did so well with the backlinking strategy – why park it?
@lee
About time Pat got somebody to moderate this thread at over 1200 threads
and did a proper FAQ to help people with this type of question
Joe is not parked unless on his backside drinking beer
http://www.josepharchibald.com/
and the 40 day challenge book is available via that page as well or
http://josepharchibalds40daychallenge.com/
which has been revised since the first addition.
hope hat helps a few folks out,
Regards
I am referring to the website that was used in the 40 Day Challenge. Cant recall the name off the top of my head.
But if he did so well in the challenge – why park the site?
LOl. Well there could be a lot of reason. And “if he did so well” i think you’ll find Jo a straight shooter. After all look at all the positive comment on this thread to the method
Pop over to his blog im sure he’ll respond
steve
Very interesting and thorough blog post. Impressive. At first I was skeptical but as I read through it I could see you addressed my various concerns. But I guess the one question I would ask is would you only use this strategy for a niche site? Or put it another way, if you were starting your main blogging site, smartpassiveincome.com, that has your name and brand attached to it would you use these same backlinking strategies?
I’ve got some issues here so if someone could help I’d be grateful.
1. Market Samurai does not in any way mirror the results that I get when I do the Google Search myself. In fact it is WAY out. So If I am basing this very precise process on results that do not appear to be correct then surely the whole thing is flawed. Is this due to regional/local searching that would change the outcome?
2. How do I make sure that my traffic is competing with the UK competitors and drawing traffic from the UK competitively?
Below is a shot of the SEO competition in market Samurai, does it look like I have a shot? I think that positions 3 5 and 8 all look dooable in a few months of heavy process? Am I right?
http://real-insights.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/market-samurai-results.jpg
1. which market samuri results?
are you talking about seo comp? and serps ordering? then use market samuri as google search is being effected by your search behaviour our us scroogle or otehr tools.
if your talking about search volumes they they wont be very different as MS just gets its data from google anyway.
Make sure you have all setting for countries and search types the same.
I assume your using exact match search on both side which you must do not broad.
3. to target the UK (hi from the cold grey south of england) then you want to either host the site on a uk server or in webmaster tools set it for UK traffic preference. In a perfect world use a .co.uk domain but dont worry if youve already bought.
2. Youve not given enough information to provide an informed opinion but to do so we’d need to see the URL’s?
Is this for adsnese ? And if so whats the CPC.
Also whats the EXACT match search volume for the target country? if it say 1000 not worth the effort if its 5000 it might be worth while. However if its a microniche market id walk on by as the average PR is around 2.7 not the end of the world and depends upon the previous two questions.
there are too many sites with vast numbers of lins to the page.
Some of the ones with pr0 are major authority sites although not inthis niche. It feels like a medical condition niche or something like that?
for a small market id probably go find a better target with average PR nearer to 1.9. Spencer haws at nichepursuits has good data for microniche sites analysis.
Bit outside the purpose of this thread mind you
And just my thoughts to be helpfull. unless you want a consult at $500 at which point it becomes fact lol
Caveat – its just that an opinion.
Thanks a lot Steve,
That’s really helpful.
In answer to your question, the search volume is 9,000 at Exact match with the SEOT being 4158. And no, it isn’t a micro-niche, but more of an old marketplace that hasn’t fully gone online yet.
This is nothing to do with PPC, it’s a free blog that does not sell directly at all but gives excellent free information away in a personal way and therefore PPC would be entirely against the ethos.
I’m quite annoyed that I can’t go further into back-links with Market Samurai because of Yahoo Site Directory going down, I mean that happened ages ago, they’ve been incredibly slow to get it sorted out. So actually that whole part of the tutorial with regards to analysing competition is not possible to do in Market Samurai and I need to go elsewhere.
I’m finding this all so much of a headache. Pat has done a great job, but there is still so many questions.
I thank you for your kind offer of consultancy Steve, but I don’t have the budget to do that once I pay for market samurai and link building software etc.
It is a real shame that Google are favouring the big, established businesses and we have to go through all of this. I’m hoping that Google+ will change this though. Do we have any idea how long before Google act to stop this link building strategy from working?
Thanks
Chris
Hi Chris
The conslt line was mean to be humour
Im not sure why you shift cpc to PPC but that was a way to guage compettion not to monetise the site.
So your not monetising this site?
Also the other questions regards PR0 were skipped so were stuck.
The strategy as drawn up by Joesph is just a small part of seo
it gets more complex the further you go. Down the rabbit hole aka alice in wonderland or Neo depending upon your cultrual reference.
There are many other tools out there to look at backlinks the Market samuri solution was neat but you just need to find a new tool fo rnow.
Not MS fault that yahoo retired thet data! Imsure they will come back with something.
The whole thing about google favouring big site is because searers/users/cnsumers/us trust big brands and not small afiliates trying to make money! makes sense to me. I trust Mercedes, Virgin airlines but not http://www.ivegotthebestexactmatchdomain.com (I build those sites monetise and make money but trust is not there).
The bottom line is I buy and below to brand tribes dont you? Americano anybody? The playing field is changing. Adapt or die not that niches sites are dead they are far from that.
cheers
I am referring to the website that was used in the 40 Day Challenge. Cant recall the name off the top of my head.
But if he did so well in the challenge – why park the site?
this is a duplicate post I’ve updated the thread above lee
cheers
Thanks for the very clear and concise instructions. I do not have any doubt that this strategy will work and I am going to implement it on a new niche site I just set up.
Thanks
Hey Pat,
) and I see they want me to provide unique article for each backlink and they do not accept spinned articles. So if for example I have 10 niche sites, and want to get 100 backlinks this month to each of them thouht BMR. Do I really have to write 1000 (ONE THOUSAND) unique articles to do that?
I’m using BMR for a few days (though you affiliate link
Yes they need t be unique, they are human audited.
100 per month is a huge amount of BMR backlinkss for a site way to many for most niche sites. Unless you aiming them at the anchor layer? but that would be a poor use of BMR’s
You can ofcourse outsource the production of BMR’s on place like $5 and outsourcing sites.
regards
BMR’s FAQ suggests that one post = 50 backlinks. Even if it was 10% of that, the effort of writing 150 words to get good quality backlinks IMO is worth it.
I wonder how they figure that? Your article goes on one of their niche sites…. That’s it. Fairly easy to track too.
@chris miller – You can track the link from within BMR itself so you can find where most of them go before hitting your site.
@chris – thats not what they are saying. You build one link from the BMR post back to your site/url ONLY per bmr post.
What the FAQ is referring to is that they expect to create upto 50 backlinks to the BMR post itself. not that one bmr is worth 50 backlinks to your domain. The purpose is to index your post rather than anything else. in fact they “guarantee” your post will get indexed and this represents on of the benefits of useing BMR over just creating a post on a web2.o property as per this strategy.
Plus of course you get a good PR to the post whilst its on the blogs front page.
hope that clarifies
regards
Yes – BMR are strincly unique articles. But if you want a system that accepts spun articles, then try ArticleRanks. I haven’t seen Pat Flynn do a review of it yet, but there are plenty of reviews on the net you could check out
Just a heads up. I went to create a free blog at typepad and it looks like they have converted to a paid blog format. They are really pushing their monthly blog plans.
I just went to do this today and saw the same thing. You have to read the small print and find the Type Pad Micro option, limited features, but it gives you what you need: an anchor layer to direct links to.
Hi Pat,
I really appreciate your outline above, and have begun the backlink process for my 5 or so sites I set up. I have followed steps 1-5 and submitted to the “anchor layer” directories/new blogs/2.0 such as the high PR Ezine, Go, Squidoo etc.
Now comes the final step; the link building to these anchor layers. I am considering UAW but have heard mixed things (this funny Canadian guy says it has lost its value – http://backlinkreviews.org/do-not-buy-list/). I am considering using My Article Network to do the same thing. Do you have a pick of the moment of a service that is the best in terms of high PR, sticky links, google-love and general online respect? Sounds like a lot is ask
I am committed to high value hyper-niche sites so want to make sure I associate with a service that helps me achieve that.
Much appreciated,
Chris
London- UK
After reading your comments and a couple other’s peoples, I decided to do some research into this as I am just getting started and want to choose the right tools. As it turns out, there are positive and negative reviews of the product. For an example of the positive, check out http://articlesubmissionreview.com/best-article-submission-and-link-building-services-2011# (just remember to come back and buy from Pat; I’m not affiliated with either, just saying).
It should be noted that they chose BMR as the best private blog network and Best Spinner as the best spinning tool. While it is 100% understood they, like Pat, get commissions off traffic they drive, they tested a ton of tools and get commissions off most of them, so neither they nor Pat had to choose these tools. For most of us, who are beginners, it is highly unlikely the difference in results will be noticeable, especially in niche markets. With that said, the only way to really find out is to test them yourself, and I’d rather trust someone like Pat than spend that amount of time and money.
Just my 2 cents
Pat I’ve been back here several times, and this post is just pure gold for backlinking strategy. I now have several wordpress.com sites up and linked to my niche sites. I love this idea for long term SEO strategy, and thanks thanks again buddy!
I have a basic question, hopefully someone can answer.
Are you basically doing 1 key word per round of this strategy?
In other words, with all the articles, web 2.0 properties and links back to the main site, are you just targeting 1 keyword, then starting over “rinsing and repeating” with your next keyword?
Thanks!
Kevin,
Yes, you are correct that you go through this whole process for one keyword and then rinse and repeat for the next keyword. The only caveat to this process is if you go through the process for the same keyword you do not need to make new web 2.0 properties. In your second layer you would still point new backlinks to these web 2.0 sites.
I hope this helps.
That helps a lot, thanks Clif!
Hi Pat, I was just wondering if you’re supposed to mention your niche site in your article and all the spinned versions of it. Thanks.
Hey guys,
I like the strategy, but I thought article directories like ezinearticles just don’t work anymore since they got hit by the panda update.
Has anyone used this backlinking strategy recently? And did it work??
Thanks
The article directories got hit badly with the Panda Update, yes, meaning their pages are no longer ranking quite as high in Google. This doesn’t mean that the articles can still work to our benefit, and especially when you consider the fact that we’re using these article directories as an anchor layer / buffer site for driving links to our site, it’s almost irrelevant, since these articles sites still maintain a lot of their authority. The strategy is still working for me at least.
Thanks for the reply Pat.
And also, if I’m using the backlinking strategy to boost the ranking of just 1 keyword, how many times would I need to do it?
Thanks
See the question above this one, same thing.
Hi Joseph and Pat
Given the evolving interest in this particular post after more than one year, I was wondering whether either of you would be able to comment on the interaction of BMR with the Anchor Layer and Indirect Layer as an update to the original strategy.
Given the original use of UAW to add strength to the anchor layer, if we were to use BMR instead of UAW, it would seem that using BMR with direct links to the niche site replaces both the need for an Anchor Layer as well as an Indirect Layer because each post within BMR has 50 backlinks to it, thus providing direct high-strength links to the niche site.
Does that make sense? I hope it does. An update regarding BMR’s role within the original strategy might be quite helpful because I believe it changes things up a bit.
PS – I love that this post comes up #2 on Google for the keyword “backlinking” (no doubt in part to the continued comment interest). Natural SEO at it’s best
Hi Jenny, Pat’s post comes up number 2 for the kwd term “backlinking” because I’ve been backlinking to it…
Just joking – as you say, its most probably part down to the amount of social interaction, and part down to the “natural” backlinks in the form of bookmarking the post.
I’m not clear as to what you mean by “each post within BMR has 50 backlinks to it”. Each post in BMR only contains a single backlink, although it is possible to achieve more than that in a round-a-bout kind of way.
If using BMR, only use it to directly link to the money site, and not to any outer layer of sites. And indeed, if using BMR, by all means re-trace your BMR links and backlink to those, in order to pump up the juice once the original BMR post you make rolls off the home page of the website its placed upon. Once the post rolls off the front page, the Google PageRank reduces to n/a, and that’s where it will stay unless you choose to do something about it yourself.
Hope that helps Jenny!
Joseph
Hi Joseph
Thanks so much for your reply! And good job on the backlinking to this post, your strategy is obviously working
Apologies if I’ve missed something, but I’m a little more confused now because I am referring to ‘stevewyman December 21, 2011 at 5:24 am’ where he says:
“What the FAQ is referring to is that they expect to create upto 50 backlinks to the BMR post itself. not that one bmr is worth 50 backlinks to your domain. The purpose is to index your post rather than anything else.”
BMR says this directly here: http://www.buildmyrank.com/faqs
What the FAQ suggests is that even if the post rolls off the front page of the website it’s placed on, BMR places 50 backlinks to it to maintain the strength of the post. However, I did check some posts within the second and third pages of the websites that these BMR posts were placed in and indeed they have a PR of n/a as you say so I’m not sure now what the 50 backlinks to the post are/do.
Apologies if this is confusing, I hope I have been able to articulate my thoughts to make some sense – I really appreciate your help Joseph!
Jenny
Hi Jenny, – your reply finally came through!
Since we’ve already covered this issue via email communication, no need to go over the same ground now. Hope you had a great Christmas over in Australia!
Jo
Hey Jo
SO youve been backlinkg to the post !
cool..
Im glad you managed to over come what appears to be me causing confusion. So my explanation sems to have ked to a further problem, and some how to more confusion!
The Faq seem extremely clear to me..
Anyway hope your getting better Jo
Hi Steve – yeah, I’ve been backlinking the post and Pat has me on a retainer, LOL! Joking of course – there’s no need for me to backlink the post – I think its gained top flight rankings for the keyword “backlinking” via “natural” SEO.
Jenny’s totally clear about the BMR stuff now Steve and thanks for following that up.
Yup, I am getting better, thanks for asking – 4 weeks with a pretty nasty viral infection took a lot out of me, but it seems to be passing now I’m happy to say.
Hope you had a fun Christmas dude – all the best!
Thanks for following up Steve – it wasn’t your post that was causing confusion, what you wrote was within the BMR FAQs, I had some confusion regarding the nature of those 50 backlinks which Jo helped me understand
Thanks so much Jo!
Appreciate all your help guys and the invaluable comments on this thread, hope you both had a great Christmas.
Ah cool No wi understand
Have a great 2012
Hi Pat and Joseph
Just wondering whether either of you had a chance to read the above review of UAW? It seems to raise a legitimate concern that UAW was quite good around a year ago (the time of Pat’s original post) but recently has lost much of its power because it has way too many posts with links in them (around 40,000!) so the blog network has lost much of its value and is not great for multiple submissions. I am really keen to hear your thoughts on this as I was just about to purchase the UAW subscription but sense that it is not as strong as it was a year ago. Would be really keen to hear either of your thoughts on this issue as things change quite rapidly in the backlinking world
Chris
Hi chris (there are a lot of chris’s on this thread
)
I’m not Pat or Joesph but
I assume your the same chris as posted the question above with he link out to the review site.
The UAW’s are pointing to the anchor layer not the money site so your point about associating with quality backlinks doesnot apply r.e. UAW as the anchor layer is there to protect you in all these ways.
A lot of folks say this about UAW so sure why not just replace it with another method of producing backlinks to the anchor layer its not important.
As pat said above its is/was a good way to produce lots of links. Many other article creation places out there now.
Steve
Is the 2 layer link building the same as link pyramide? I am quite new to SEO and have not used it yet but have read several blogs and on fiverr that is is very effective.
Hi
Its not the same but similar in principle. A link pyramid would funnel links down to a single point which would then point to your site. This creates multiple connections to you site.
Ok a link pyramid could have the money site as the tip but i prefer to use them as described above.
A note on fiver gigs (which i kinda dislike). They are selling you something. Ofocurse they think they work. Same as the xrumer guys that will happily dump 4000 spammy links direct to your money site in 1 day !! not good. fine if your doing it to an anchor layer thing but its bad news to the moeny site. Buyer beware.
regards and good luck with your SEO journey.
Is it true that BMR does not accept spun articles?
Hi
Yes it is true. Each post is subjected to a human reader audit. and if its clearly spun wil be rejected. also they can spot if your spinning the same thing in one series of submmisons.
We dont want that netowkr full of spun crap nor do they.
Also get the keyword in the first 40 or so words. A top tip..
Stevewyman
Thanks a lot for the reply! What’s wrong with spun stuff? Maybe since I’m new to this I’m not really getting it. I know pat talks about it on here (and forgive me if I missed it or misunderstood) but aren’t I supposed to spin articles to submit them to directories to get my backlinks? I’m a little confused on the process.
Hi
Seperate subjects. Very well spun content can be sent out to article directory networks. and indeed i would only use spun content in that situtaion except for the few top article directories where it still wants to be original and unique.
You often need to create at least 500 words post spin but you get to send them to lots of sites
BMR (build my rank) is a privately owned Blog network so a completely different beast. the posts are 150 words to put one link back to your site and are DOFollow links.
Your posting to pages that are PR1-PR5 so valueable links until the article falls of the first page.
Writing BMR article is at best boring but its effective.
regards
unlike you comment which is just spam. 5 years to learn how to spam somebodies blog well done !
still its a nofollow link for your client!
Merry Christmas Pat. Tom doesn’t speak for all of us. There is so much information here it is crazy. Your methods have gotten my site to number 8 in less then 2 months. thanks again.
Kevin
Merry christmas to one and all
@ Kevin – look like toms comment got deleted ! dont need bad mouthing around here i agree.
Cheers
Hey Steve – I didnt delete Tom’s comment, it’s still there (I only deleted his response to a spam comment that was deleted). Again, I appreciate all constructive criticism. Merry Christmas everyone subscribed to this post!
Hey Pat – cool. I was happy if you had deleted it
happy 2012 to one and all.. Epic year to come i think
cheers
Hi Pat,
I want to truly thank you for providing this information on Back links. I have been busy following it and have produced many articles within UAW and I am amazed at how many back links have come my way.
I assure you I am no spammer! Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.
Thanks Pat!
Do you do this for each individual page on your niche site? Or just the home page?
I do this for the homepage for the primary keyword that I’m targeting, and if I want to seriously target another keyword, I create another page on the site optimized for that keyword, and do a separate backlinking campaign for that.
hello pat
i am from Saudi Arabia
and i letin to you podcast in Saudi Arabia using my iPhone 3gs
thank you pat for all thing you provide
and this backlink strategy is the best and i do it all time
Happy christmas and have a fantastic 2012
Such an awesome resource Pat. I may be using this pretty late, but have just set up a tumblr, squidoo and wordpress blog in the last few hours. Its going great.
Thinking about investing in one of the tools here, build my rank or UAW.
Which would you recommend is more important at the early stages of backlinking.
How long do you think it takes to start seeing results?
Ian
HI
typically with any link building program 2-3 months. Ofcourse earlier results are quite commmen but not always.
With your site as its established indexed etc a month or so should show good movement especially on longtail keywords.
regards
Anyone here use any link exchange directory? I don’t think Pat has covered the topic (forgive me if he has, there are many comments on this thread).
I’m wondering if they are legit (especially the free ones) and if they help. I read some mixed reviews. Some stated that search engines can penalize you because their algorithm realizes you’re using a “link farm.” Other reviews stated that it helps in providing backlinks that point back to your site.
Can anyone shed light on the topic? Thanks!
HI
I’ve found them to be weak links myself with the free versions. Id not be worried about google tracking those.
The paid link directoreis. Id not use them. Unless you paying to get a ront page permenant listing on a high PR page I’d again walk away (not that i buy links at all mind you).
Its quite possible that google is finding those paid directories when the human reviwers look at the source of backlnks to site. So again i would not go down this route.
regards
Thanks a lot for the reply Steve
That’s why I like this site. I find Pat and most users are very informative and don’t mind helping someone out at all.
Hope everyone has a safe and happy New Year! I wish all of us happiness, health and success in 2012!
Thanks Pat,
This is awesome, just need something clarifying if you can?
I refer to the last paragraph in step 4:-
After you have all of the above mentioned sites setup, you don’t need to keep creating more. When you get to this point, you can skip step #4 entirely because they will already be in place and doing their job.
Does this mean more of the same, squidoo, hubpages article submissions etc?
Thanks again
John
From an administrative point of view, you won’t need to set up new accounts as you will already have one for each. For blogs, you won’t need to create new posts unless you’re targeting a new keyword. For web 2.0 and hub-pages, you only need to create a new Lens or Hub Page if you’re going after a new keyword. Take note though: Squidoo lenses require maintenance and are not guaranteed to go live. I had one go live and the next time I checked it it was not live; had to add more content and modules. With that said, they’re an important layer, and worth maintaining.
Cheer Chris,
Thanks for the info..
Hi All..
i love it’s info cool!!
I’ve been using a variation of this in which you create open link wheels for each anchor layer site using lower level 2.0 properties (Wet Paint, Live Journal, Blogger, etc.). Works well but it does take forever if you want to use unique content.
Happy New Year!
Hey Pat,
Why, under the Web 2.0 section, do you not include InfoBarrel? Are HubPages and Squidoo something different from InfoBarrel, or is it because IB doesn’t have the domain authority the others do yet?
Another question – When you say the spun articles and new blog posts are linking back to your niche site, do you to link back to the unique blog post or page you just created on your blog, or do you link back to your blog’s homepage?
Thanks for all your great work Pat!
Pat,
I appreciate this article very much. Thank you for taking the time to write it.
I do have a question. When you set up you web 2.0 properties that direct link to your money site, do you continue to use these to rank for other keywords? Is it as simple as making a new lense on squidoo, or a new post on a wordpress.com blog for each new keyword phrase you want to rank and point to the money site? Or maybe in the case of the wordpress.com, should you register another blog for a different keyword phrase?
Thanks in advance,
Brian
Thanx pat for this very useful post u wrote, really help me a lot.
Hi Pat, thx again for all SPI content – it’s priceless. Just a quick one regarding Hubpages rules, I created a few hubs with max.1 or 2 promotional links in Bio and it’s been accepted. Hubs with more then 2 promotional links will not be published.
Hi Pat,
I have a few questions, if I may. Please forgive what may come across as ignorance.
Once I get to step 6, do you start with a brand new keyword applicable to your niche and then just continue with the same process? in other words, you make a blog site for each keyword?
One of my goals for 2012 is to build the backlinks to my sites.
Thanks,
Jenny
Jenny,
Once you get to step 6 (rinse & repeat) you can target the same keyword again or do a whole different keyword.
If you are really trying to boost your rank for a particular keyword you will certainly have to do this process more than once. You may do it once a day, once a week, once every two weeks, or once a month for a specific keyword depending on the competition. You only create the blog and web 2.0 properties one time for a specific keyword. However, when doing the in-direct layer you can push a new set of links to these already created properties.
When working on a new set of keywords you will need to create new web 2.0 properties and blogs.
I hope this helps!
Pat & Jo,
Thanks for chiming in and clarifying my comment.
Clif
Thanks, Cliff. So, let me make sure I have this straight. If I am targeting a specific keyword like “Ragdoll Cats”, then I might have one “campaign (steps 1-5)” be “Ragdoll cats” and then the next one might be “Raising Ragdoll cats” – in other words, you just use a longer tail keyword to achieve the same purpose with the one keyword, “Ragdoll cats”?
Actually, it’s one keyword per page that you’re targeting.
In other words, if you’re targeting “ragdoll cats”, than you do 1-5 using the anchor text “ragdoll cats”. When you get to the end, do it again – for “ragdoll cats”, if you’re targeting the same page. Do this over and over – new articles on your site, through spinning and submitting to articles (although you can skip creating NEW blogs and 2.0), until you are satisfied.
The only time you’d move to another campaign, and switch anchor texts (i.e. raising ragdoll cats, or black cats, or whatever), is when you’re targeting a new keyword, which should point to a different page on your existing site, optimized for that keyword (meaning, that keyword is in the title of the page, description, headers, naturally within the post, etc.)
Hi Jenny, you’d want “raising Ragdoll cats” to be part of the same campaign process as “Ragdoll cats” since they are very closely tied – you could easily target the same page on your website with both those kwd phrases, I guess. But for sure – “Ragdoll cats” would be thoroughly appropriate for your home page, even if your site was targeting a variety of breeds.
Hope that serves to help and not to hinder
Joseph
Ahh – good catch Joseph. Thanks. Indeed, they are close enough together – you can get more bang for your buck that way and rank the page for both keywords.
Oh heck – because I can’t find Pat’s and Clif’s replies, I’ll just reply at the bottom – always my pleasure, gentlemen! Best wishes for the coming year!
Joseph
Jo,
I never seem to understand how comments and replies are placed on the page either. They never seem to be in chronological order of any kind. I am always using the search function (CTRL + F) in Firefox to attempt to find the proper comments.
Happy New Year,
Clif
Golly Clif – that idea works a real treat! I tried it in Chrome – the Ctrl F – popped into the search box a part of your reply from the email I got when you made it, and voila – here I am replying to your previous comment within seconds and no searching around on Pat’s blog to find it either!
Nice one Clif!!
Jo
Hey Pat/Joseph/all other contributors:
I’ve really enjoyed this thread and learned a lot. The challenge is that the more I do it the more I think I don’t understand it 100%! I guess I’m at the stage that can be described as knowing what I don’t know.
I’ve got a few questions. Let’s say I’ve got a company webpage on my business and I’m a tidal wave expert in Utah. I figure I want people searching “Utah tidal wave” to find me, so I use that as the anchor text.
I create 10 blogs with 10 articles on each, with “Utah tidal wave” as anchor text linking back to my main site.
I submit articles to article directories as well, with “Utah tidal wave” in them in the signature box, linking back to the main site.
I then spin articles and post them in UAW, with “Utah tidal wave” appearing twice in the top part of each article on UAW. These UAW articles link through the resource boxes to the article directories and the anchor level blogs.
It just occurred to me that on my company site I have the equivalant of “tidal wave expert” in the footer of every single post and page, but not “Utah”.
So, is the footer an ok place for this keyphrase on my main site, and if so, should I go back and edit every keyphrase to include “Utah” with “tidal wave”?
Progress update (not super impressive, perhaps, but real) – when I started I didn’t come up first in google for a search on my own company name. Now I absolutely own that web real estate. My keywords for my core business are very competitive, but I have gotten to page 1 on google for other side project sites. Thanks to Steve Jobs for podcasts, thanks to Pat for making one, and thanks to Joseph for giving Pat the subject matter for this post.
Hey Rob, that’s a whole lotta work to do to only find out that you’ve got the wrong kwd phrase at the end of it all!
Is the footer an okay place for the keywd phrase on your main site? It is, but I’d want to stick it in as the title on the page I was optimizing for that keyword. And you can also do what the on-page SEO tools tell you is good which is to add the phrase in the body of your article (on your webpage) – preferably one in the first paragraph, and bold the kwd phrase and underline it and italicize it and make sure you wrap it in a bow
I do joke about this because quite frankly I feel to do all this is simply unnatural (but you can of course argue that SEO is unnatural so who am I to quibble about it?).
Many folks also want to ensure a certain kwd density on the page – some place between 2% and 5% being optimal. Well, I do just fine with my Goog rankings and I could care less about kwd density on the webpage.
There’s other things you can do like linking to that particular webpage from other pages on your site, and ensuring that you tag the kwd on the webpage also, which you have already probably done with the insertion in the footer.
Should you go back and edit the phrase to include “Utah”? Well, I guess that would be your call Rob, but as it stands now you’re not going to gain rankings for “Utah tidal wave expert” where you may very well gain the rankings for “tidal wave expert”.
I think what I would do is go back and edit quite a few of them to make them something like “Utah tidal wave expert”, “tidal wave expert Utah”, “tidal wave expert Utah State”, etc. Then I would probably let the rest of the links ride as they are, and very possibly try to gain a top flight ranking for “tidal wave expert” which no doubt is much more competitive than the Utah version but could very well provide a good return on investment nevertheless.
I’d always be thinking what’s giving me the best ROI – what’s providing, or could provide the best bang for my buck? Is it going to be a ranking for “tidal wave expert” or is it going to be “Utah tidal wave expert”? Chance are good that I’d want to rank for both, so I would not be upset by using “tidal wave expert” as my anchor text.
All the best Rob and thanks for your kind comments!
Joseph
Tom/Jo/Steve/Clif/other contributors:
Thanks for all the info you have provided. I have a couple detail questions that I haven’t seen covered yet (or missed).
1. How many times do you feel comfortable spinning an article? I am currently placing an original article on one article directory, and then spun articles 6 web 2.0 blogs (2 wordpress.com, 2 blogger, 2 posterous) before submitting it to UAW. Can I get more out of one article, or am I already spreading it a little thin? My TBS articles usually score around 50% unique.
2. I may have missed it in Pat’s video, but when creating multiple resource boxes in UAW, I’m submitting to all 7 anchor sites…say 50 resource boxes with links to the posterous blogs, 50 to wordpress, 50 to blogger, etc. Is this correct?
3. For each keyword, I’ve created 15-20 web 2.0 blogs. Once I get a spun article on each of these, is there more strength in adding a second article on each blog, or creating a new blog to get an additional referring domain?
Thanks again for all the help.
@Aaron
3) I would not add another article to teh web 2 blog with a link in it back to the same site.
You can add more article to it to make it look more natural but i would not have links going back to the money site.
Do remeber that the anchor layer elements are disposbale. they will get taken down or lost sometimes. They are shields to prevent the heavy hits coming into them impacting on the moeny site directly.
So if you want more links to the money site – add new web 2 properties
If you want the existing one to be stronger then – you can add more articles but with out links.
There are other variations on this idea as always but tehse are the ones i use.
regards
Thanks for the quick reply, Steve.
That’s kinda what I was thinking, but I got confused by the “no need to add NEW web 2.0 blogs” comments above.
Any suggestions on how many times I can spin an article w/TBS?
Hi
I dont know what the limits are im sorry to say. I spin to about 75% and then submitt once or twice to directories etc.
If you want a generic article to use for submission try a ultraspinnable article.
Just wondering if this system would work with the infamous fiverr link packages, used only on the anchor layer….so technically not pointing to the main site.
Any thoughts?
Jerome, yes, you can use Fiverr gigs to backlink to the outer tier sites and it can be very effective.
Joseph
Thanks for the email reply Joseph!
Wow, I don’t think Tom realizes how much PAT actually gives back to his community and how responsive he is. Some People need to learn to have some patience. I don’t think its allot to expect that PAT has a holiday with his Family. I recently met him in person and can say he’s been more than generous with sharing whats worked (this backlink article is just one Example) and what is not useful on the many of his projects.
Ok, now that I said my 2 cents, I actually did want to ask the community if anyone has had any luck with a service called Tribepro ? This is a monthly service that uses the power of a community/Tribe to post recently pushed articles and content on related groups on Social platforms (FB, Twitter, and others). Google and other search engines pick these up quickly and I’ve seen some videos where they get around 400+ shares within 5 minutes, but I’d like to know if anyone here has had any success/failure with Tribepro to help with back linking and Social Bookmarking?
Any help or advice would be appreciated, thanks all.
Hi Pat
I just want to show up and say Hi!
I’ve been a reader of your blog for quite some time now but I haven’t left any comment yet. So this is my first one. And the first thing I want to say is THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing with us everything about your niche site!
I’m new to niche marketing and I find these kinds of case studies are priceless. But if you’re still replying to the comments, I want to ask some questions.
How many links did you build everyday for the first few weeks of this case study? And of what kinds (social bookmarks or web 2.0 links right of the bat)? Also, do you believe that dofollow backlinks surrounded by relevant content are more valuable than say links from blog comments or social bookmarking sites?
I want to know it because I know the Google sandbox effect is real and I’m struggling ranking my first niche site. I think it fell into the sandbox already
Anyway, thanks a lot Pat. You and SPI are God-sent presents!
Duy.
As a semi update for those working this plan. Buzzle is no longer allowing anchor text on their site. May save you a few minutes.
I know this is an older post, but I just wanted to tell you that this is probably my most visited page on the web. I know I come back here at least once every couple of weeks to see what you have updated as well as to make sure I have all my items in order. Also, since I’ve started writing some how-to’s myself, I know how long this thing took to put together. This is incredible, free, how-to information that took you hours to research and hours to put together. Thank you not for just writing it, but also for keeping it up to date (like the changes to your Hubpages above and other items you’ve updated since creating this article).
This is a great article on backlinks, but could I ask a couple of questions please?
When you place your re-written (or spun) articles on the ‘other blogs’ and web 2.0 sites, do you need to keyword optimise them in the same way as the posts on your website (i.e. keyword term in the url, the title, the first paragraph, the last paragraph and once or twice in the body of the post), or is it simply that you need a keyword anchor text pointing back to the post on your blog with that keyword, and the rest is not important? (Sometimes you cannot get the url that you want, e.g. lowcarbdietplan is not available at blogger as someone else has it).
Secondly, if the later is true, is it a good idea to write a general article covering several related areas of the same broad topic, and have several links on it, all pointing back to a different post on your blog (so each one to a different post)?
And finally is there any value in linking the blogs to each other, e.g. a tumblr blog to a wordpress blog, and the wordpress blog to a blogger blog – all with links back to your main site as well of course? The reason being that in the above example you have increased the power of the wordpress blog and the blogger blog even more.
Thank you and best wishes for 2012
David
Great questions. And shows you get a lot of the seo stuff going on here.
However, No you dont need to do optimises SEO onpages stuff for the anchor layer. In fact there are some reasons not to. You dont want or need then to rank well if at all for the terms they are funnelling juice to the money site. There is an argument to making them look as if you have done a bit f work to them though. Delete the standard posts in a new installation. add in n SEO meta title and description. and have an article thats at least 300 words long is all good practice just dont worry about optimising it.
The otehr question relates to interlinking blogs. This is what was called a link wheel so well dont on spotting that idea. however it probably/maybe/could be detected as an unnatural pattern if done in a fixed manner.
You could do some random interlinking and there are arguments that make that a good idea. However on balance just dont do that and spend the time creating move anchor layers
regards
Thanks for taking the time to reply Steve. Really appreciate it, and that helps, thanks.
What about having a few articles on the anchor layer with links back to several posts on your blog, rather than just the one? All in a similar field of course, with the anchor layer article touching on all of them.
And would you recommend boosting the anchor layer (and maybe the posts on your main site as well) with a free linking service like Social Monkee?
Hi
I would not. Keep the anchor layer properties with only one link back to the money site With one anchor text.
You definetly dont want to go as far as 3 articles with three links back to three pages onthe original site.
When working these thing out try to think “is this natural” its not a 100% rule but its a good place to start. So would a website have x articles all of which have 1 link to another website with matching subject. Probably not. It could but probably would not.
Matt cutts once said that interlinking sites is fine. as long as theres a reason to do that. One link makes sense multiple links doesnot.
Again the anchor layer can have many articles. but remeber the perpusoe is to focus all the juice coming into back to the money site. not dsperse it around itself and elsewhere.
With teh anchor layer you can throw anything at it you want. But free social monkee links wont boos it very much use the ideas pats got about for anchor layer links. volume is required to get juice to flow through to the money site.
Ive never used social monkee it has an ok reputation. for a free bookmarking service you could use IMautomation
regards
@Steve and David – You can get more links with socialmonkee than with imautomator. But it’s hard to tell if they actually do anything. Does anyone know if they do?
One difference that might be a benefit is that socialmonkee gives you the actual links so you can get them indexed whereas imautomator doesn’t tell you where your link was posted.
I’d say try them both:
http://www.socialmonkee.com/index.php?af=67737
http://imautomator.com/
Well I’ve been following this backlink strategy. I’ve only submitted 6 articles to 6 article directories and these are acting as the anchor layer. But after the last article was indexed by google, my homepage disappeared from the SERPs and was replaced by an internal page at a lower position. It’s been like that for four days now. How can I make my homepage start showing up again? Please help.
Hi
How old is the Money site domain?
And how many links did you have to it before you submitted to the article directories?
And are you saying you have written 6 seperate articles and submitted each one to the full list of directory sites? or just 6 articles to 6 indiviual sites?
BTW the answer to your question is that you in a google dance. The best way to look at this is something in the google algo or google bot is asking itself “why so many links so fast to this URL” or something like that. And i like to think of this as they have taken the URL and put it in a Box with a ? on it. In the meantime they have ranked then next most relevant URL on your site for the keyword phrase. With time you’ll come back on the original URL at a higher serps position. probably. but it could take a while.
regards
It’s 14 days old and I had just created the homepage when I started so it didn’t have any backlinks before I started using Joseph Archibald’s backlink strategy. I have submitted 6 articles to only six directories – 6 backlinks in total. Thanks for your response.
PS: Every new page I create starts ranking in place of the previous page.
What about being a guest writer on someone else’s blog, Pings, and Trackbackes? Also what about adding your articles to Digg and other like sites?
to throw at the money site? or at the anchor layer?
This strategy is not really about lower leve links to the money site which do have a purpose in seo and ranking. but at creating a layer to then hit with lots of links.
Blog comments are cool but take a lot of time so I’d not use to the anchor layer myself.
Steve; thanks for the replies to my questions. I’m putting this down here as there was no reply button on your last response. I’ll take a look at IMAutomator.
Excuse my ignorance, but what is a ‘meta title’? Does this just simply mean the title of the post?
And I was wondering if you knew the effect of mixing up keyword phrases. E.g. say my keyword is ‘benefits of intermittent fasting’, would ‘intermittent fasting benefits’ (words mixed up) or even ‘benefits you can expect from intermittent fasting (words separated) be picked up in the same way by the search engines?
Thanks again
David
Thanks for all this info Pat, I’m using it one day at a time. I prefer BMR over anything else, and am making good progress with the daily posts using my anchor text.
Thank Pat for your awesome post. I read it when it first came out and read it again today so that I can start taking action. I just bought The Best Spinner (through your affiliate link!) but just realized that it is only a Windows application. The problem is: I have a Mac! Is there a way for me to run The Best Spinner on a Mac? I’ve tried running The Best Spinner with Wine but it doesn’t work for me. Any suggestions?
Tujer,
Yes, you can run it on the Mac, but the only way I know that will work for sure is to do this. One, get a copy of Windows (I’m using Windows 7) – install it using Bootcamp on the Mac, and then you can dual boot between Windows and Mac OS. Now, if you do install windows using Bootcamp, you can buy software like Parallels that will allow you to run Windows applications without having to boot into Windows. This is the route I’d go (and have gone), but if you don’t have a copy of Windows laying around somewhere, this could be expensive. I’m pretty sure that Windows XP would work as well although I haven’t tried it – almost everyone has a copy of that laying around from some old hardware. Hope that helps.
Hi Tujer – Allen is right, bootcamp will work. There’s also a program that I use on my Mac called Parallels, which allows me to run windows programs right in my Mac operating system, so I don’t have to restart the computer in windows mode, I can run programs like they were mac compatible. Issue is, as with Bootcamp, you’ll need a legit copy of Windows too.
Another option is using a different spinner. There’s a web-based one called Content Professor that runs on the web so it doesn’t matter what operating system you use – only thing is it’s not quite as robust as TBS and during the sales funnel, whether you by the product or use the free trial, they upsell you a lot for other things, so just beware.
HI Pat,
This is a great article and very useful for me. I knew a few things about backlinking but I haven’t thought that we should better not point directly to out niche site.
So this video and the notes explain the whole process. It is clear.
I am a little bit anxious because I know it would be easier to use some tools but I don’t want to spend money on that. This is one of my principles. I see your point when you say that it is not necessary to buy any tool and i appreciate the fact that you are honest. On the other hand I know that the whole strategy becomes much harder and time-consuming if we want to do everything by our own…
These are just some of my thoughts…I don’t have a solution to suggest!
Just a question :
What about post comments on blogs ? Do you think that it is useful to comment on blogs (dofollow or nofollo) in order to build backlinks ?
Anyway, thank you very much!
Lenia
Hi
Blog comments with anchor text back to the money site are a great way to add diversity to the backlinking nd will help with ranking. I woul dnot us e them back to the anchor layer though no need.
When doing blog commenting its worth ensuring the PAGE you put the blog comment on has some PR and that there are less than say 50 comments already on that page.
The higher the PR of the page you comment on (not the site) and the lower then number of comments and othe rlinks from the page (out bound links = OBL) the better
regards
I just wanted to pass by and say that using this strategy I got my blog to be in the 3rd position in Google in less than 2 months, this is a complete mindblow to me that I’m just starting in the passive income world!
Thanks Pat and Joseph, I couldn’t have done this without your help
Thanks Rodrigo for your feedback – much appreciated! Great going on the rankings!
Joseph
Thanks Pat, I have used your techniques to help my own site move on up the rankings.
I couldn’t help but notice no one is mentioning varying your anchor text except Pashek and Archibald commenting on using “click here” for some variation.
Are you all running this linking technique multiple times to your site with the same anchor text until you reach desired rankings?
Hi George, my name’s Joseph – I’ve not been called Archibald since I was at school which now seems a very long time ago, thanks
This “system” is based upon variation of anchor text – more emphasis on that variation being backlinks to the money site, whereby the anchor text has to be varied or it would not work – Google have caught up with non-variation of anchor text and will happily penalize a websites rankings should anchor text variation not be quite enough.
But even if you were to use variations on the main keyword phrase you are trying to rank for, you still get “link love” from that variation to the main keyword. An example:
Say I wanted to rank for the keyword phrase “backlinks”. Of course I would use that word as anchor text, but I’d also perhaps use phrases such as “buy backlinks”, “backlinks checker”, “free backlinks”, or whatever fitted in with my website’s offerings and that I may well also wish to try to rank for. This would confer some “juice” to my main keyword too, providing these other phrases were on the same webpage as my main phrase.
Hope that makes sense George.
Joseph
Hey Jo
DO you use a 70/20/10 split on anchor text or something like that.
So 70% of the time you use the exact keyword phrase you want to rank form 20% of the time you use releated longtial keywords and 10% of the time you use things like the url, Click here, or short tail versons.
The aim being to make the backlinking look as natural and diverse as possible?
regards
Hi Steve, you been missing for a bit! Hope you are well!
I tend to use a far lesser amount of exact match anchor text to my chosen keyword phrase than I used to. Ever since Google became more tetchy about this, which was not long ago, I feel it wise to vary up the anchor text a whole lot more. But I do tend to use variations on the exact match keyword phrase a lot of the time by adding in a word or two to the phrase.
Examples:
“losing weight” being the kwd I want to rank for
“losing weight quickly” being one of my variations on my targeted kwd phrase.
Personally I’m a bit lazy with the “click here” and the url type of anchor text on my own sites, but I will use them more often on client’s sites, particularly variations on the url, which although does not add value to the rankings as such, does of course help vary up the anchors, and looks more natural too since folks often bookmark a site with variations on the url.
Jo
Steve & Jo,
According to SEOMoz they suggested somewhere about a 25% exact match anchor text. To make it easier you could go one in every three.
The full video and post can be found at http://www.seomoz.org/blog/all-about-anchor-text-whiteboard-friday.
Hey Jo
Just less time on blog commenting as got a lot of new client projects to get going.
And a bit of down time as I had no christmas period
Thanks for the insights. Thats cool and makes sense. I tend to your the ratio to just make sure i do cover the variations. 60 to 70 seems to make sense to me.
Your right about Mr Google he doesnot ilike it when folks over saturate the exact match keyword. To many go 100% on exact which is so not natural and certainly they dont blend backlink type either
cheers
Yeah Steve, 100% exact match anchor text to desired keyword phrase most definitely does not work any longer in terms of achieving good Google rankings.
I hope that is very clear to anyone who is starting out in the Google SEO game – you have to mix up the backlink anchor text a whole lot or Google will clobber your rankings!
Regards
Jo
Clif, thanks for that info!
I would say that more recently I’m hitting about 15 – 20% exact match to my desired keyword phrase, and using variations on that particular keyword phrase about 80% of the time, with the “off topic” anchor text being used the rest of the time. Probably I’m a bit low on the exact match keyword anchor text than I need to be, but I’m now more of the “be on the safer side” mind-set than I ever was previously, and for good reason too!
Mind you, if there are a number of good keywords that are very closely related to your main phrase, then you can get “juice” from those related keywords to your main kwd, providing they are on the same webpage.
I’m finding that strategy to be very useful in terms of lowering my time investment, and lowering my cash investment too, thereby return on investment tends to be higher.
All the best Clif!
Jo
@cliff – thanks for the link Id lost that one. made sure ive propely bookmarked it now
I see the reply has broken again this seems to happen always after the reply gets nested to about the 4th level
@Jo – so for clarity are you advocating 20%-30% exact match only!
And for clarity the other 70%-80% could be long tail variants they dont need to be random?
thanks
Hey Steve, I tend to only do about 15% or so exact match to the kwd phrase I want to rank, although I don’t keep an actual tally on that – its a bit more reliance on gut instinct.
The other 80% or so, I tend to use long tail variants almost all of the time, just to try and get some extra juice to my main keyword phrase, although at the same time, I’m often trying to gain some ranking traction with those variants on the main keyword phrase also – more so if they do have some decent search volume showing in the Google stats.
Jo
I see that you updated your recommendation to use BMR and noted that people use this as a primary link resource. Since you must submit a 150 word post for every link, do you feel the value of the BMR links are worth the monthly price and effort? Or would submitting the 150 word summary to a revenue sharing site for free be just as worthwhile? I guess what I’m really asking is how good is BMR, in your opinion, compared to a revenue sharing site?
Hi; I put up a couple of questions that seem to have got missed. I wonder if anyone could help with them? Thanks. They were:
What is a ‘meta title’? Does this just simply mean the title of the post?
Do you know what the effect of mixing up keyword phrases is. E.g. say my keyword is ‘benefits of intermittent fasting’, would ‘intermittent fasting benefits’ (words mixed up) or even ‘benefits you can expect from intermittent fasting (words separated) be picked up in the same way by the search engines?
Also UAW is very expensive. Does anyone know if One-Way Links would be just as good, or is there something else cheaper? Thanks.
@David – Meta Title is the title of the post in a worpress site. And is one of the Meta Tags needed for goos SEO. You should have at least the title and the Description for each page/post on teh site. Esnure they are unique for each page.
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=79812
If your using those three phrases as anchor text in the backlinks, then you are indiciating to google that this is what the page is about.
They have semantic simularities so they reinforce the concept this page is about “intermittent”, “fasting” and “benefits” which one asume is the intention.
if you remove the of,you, can type words then “Benefits intermittent fasting” seems to be what your suggesting the page is about.
its a good thing tomix anchor text like that into the backlinming
Its way more complex than that but a rough guide.
there are elements of ths process which when you do your self do have a cost its fair to say. BMR is not cheap either but they are effective.

Hi Pat, I’m really happy to find your blog. Many great post here. Just a little bit question about this method, is it still work? What about the google panda issue? Last, the method of buiild new blog, do you build another new blog to repeat that anchor layer or just add some article on existing blog and link them again to your niche site?
Thanks n regards,
Nata
Hi Nata
Yes it still works. Panada didnot really effect this process.
You’ll see Pat has changed a few recomendation above as time has gone on to keep the proces fresh.
Yes build new blogs is probably the best process to folow. You dont want a blog n the anchor layer pointing to many URl’s on the money site
regards
Hi Steve,
Thansk for explaining. Do you really mean build new blogs for the same niche site? On Pat’s case, for security guard training site for example, do we need to build a new blogger again and pointing the anchor to that niche site to enrich backlink? Or just add more article on existing blogger and pointing the new anchor to the same. Which one? Again, thanks for your words
more web 2.0 properties rather than more articles on teh existing ones.
Pat, when you say rinse and repeat, do you mean to do steps 1 through 5 for all the keywords to your niche site? So if you had 10 keywords you were trying to rank for, you would write 10 articles on each of the free blogs, squidoo, etc? Sorry for the noob question.
Hey Bob! No worries – not a n00b question!
When I say rinse and repeat, I mean you start over from step one and post a new article on your website, then spin it (well) and then post it to the article sites. From there, you can skip creating new blogs and new squidoo lenses because you already did that (although if you wanted to add one or two more articles to those sites to make them more meatier, that wouldn’t hurt!), and then go right to the second layer of backlinking – this is all for the task of ranking for the same page, although recently, as you may see from recent discussions here on the post, that varying your anchor text a bit would be beneficial – so don’t ALWAYS use the same anchor text when pointing back to your money site. Looks more natural that way. Hope this helps!
Hi Pat, let me join here
This is very clear words. But when I read this, I realize that this is hard work, not a very “easy button” like other gurus say out there. By now, I think focus on one niche site is better. Get rank for it before we go to another site. What do you think?
Yes this definitely helps, Pat! Wow, the free content you are giving away has taught me more about making money online than any other expensive ebook and course I have bought in the past. I wish I had discovered your blog sooner because I’d be so far ahead than where I am right now.
I’m applying the free techniques you’ve taught on your blog at the moment just to get a handle on the process. Once I have it dialed in, I’m going to purchase UAW and Market Samurai through your affiliate links to streamline everything. For what you delivered you’ve definitely earned it. Thanks man!
I have a small but mature domain, 5+ years, with maybe 500 uniques a day, 200 or so backlinks. Would that be able to handle or gain from direct backlinks from a UAW tool, or should I stick to the anchor strategy only?
Hi Leon,
I’ve started this strategy in the last couple months, and was in a similar situation.
I have mostly used the strategy as outlined, using UAW to the anchor layer, especially for my interior pages.
However, I currently have an article running on UAW pointing directly to my home page on my $ site. I just greatly reduced the number of submissions per day (very important) to around 7-10.
From what I understand of this process, this trickle of links will not create the high PR links that the anchor links provide, but it does boost the total number of links for your site (which you could use if you’ve only got about 200).
This seems to be working for me, as I’ve moved from 4 to 2 in Google for this keyword over the last 2 weeks.
Hi Leon
You can and should create other links to the money site other than just using this strategy only.
I would personally not use UAW to do that but say BMr posts.
Dont forget to vary up the anchor text as well.
regards
I just wanted to post this as a “You can do it!” type thing.
Because of this blog I have completed my site today (with adsense) and I am currently 7th on Google. I launched at the end of October.
Keep working and you will get results. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help.
Thank you Pat.
Kevin
Does anyone else on here have problems with squidoo? I know you said to avoid hub pages because they are getting strict. I never used them, but I get constant problems with squidoo. I just can’t get a lens accepted and I’ve no idea what’s wrong with them. Anyone else have the same problem?
Hi David, although a Squidoo link is a good link to have, there’s not enough time to be messing with it if its not playing ball with you. I suggest you move along swiftly and forget about Squidoo as far as these backlinking methods are concerned. Here’s a list of other web2′s which are fairly “sticky” i.e. are regarded as being “solid” websites to use for this type of backlinking. One or two may not work – apologies for that if this is the case…
Regards and best wishes,
Joseph

Thanks for the advice Joseph – and for the list. Should blogspot and tumblr have been on there. I’ve already started to use those two, as well as wordpress and ezinearticles.
Hi David, this is not an exhaustive list, its merely a number of web2 “properties” that you can use if you so wish.
Regards
Joseph
I started down this list and found 2 out of the first 5 were inactive site. Of the other 3 it was not apparent how to get a back link.
Could you provide more information?
Joe.. Thank you so much for all your useful info. Do you have an updated list of article directories we should be submitting our articles to? It seems like policy has changed on a few of them since pat posted this guide.
Thanks again.
Kevin
Hi Kevin, sorry I don’t have an updated list of article directories to share with you. I know its a pain what with the article directories constantly on the change. That’s part of the game, I’m afraid. You may do fine by carrying out a Goog (or Yahoo or Bing) search for “article directories” or something similar. Mind you, you may actually find results for 5 years ago – the search engines being still very far from perfect. Take care to try to find a date that the post was made.
Regards
Joseph
David,
I’ve not had an issue with Squidoo personally, but I have had problems getting things through on Ezine articles in the past. I would get the pre-canned messages telling me x, y or z was wrong, I would fix them, resubmit, and I would never get any further. I finally just contacted them and got a real person’s response and found out what the problem was. That being said, it might be worth dropping an email to their support and seeing why your articles aren’t making it through.
Yes; thanks Allen. I have sent them an e-mail under ‘feedback’ as I couldn’t find ‘support’. I’ll see if they reply.
Hi Pat, I tried to check your backlink for your wordpress blog, but backlinkwatch.com can’t find any. If Google doesn’t index your second layer link, then what’s the point? Or Google has deindexed those pages?
Hey Yenny, I have two wordpress blogs pointing to the security guard site, the other one is the one I was focusing on: http://securityguardtraining4all.wordpress.com/
Hi Pat, I mean the indirect layer, mass article submissions that point back to your blogs (wordpress, tumblr, livejournal). I want to check them out because I want to see how do you point to your blogs from those mass submission, the inner page (http://securityguardtraining4all.wordpress.com/2010/09/13/becoming-a-security-guard-isnt-that-hard/) or the main domain (http://securityguardtraining4all.wordpress.com). However, using backlinkwatch.com, I couldn’t find pages that link back to your wordpress.
I just ran the backlink checker and saw a bunch of 2nd layer links pointing to the main domain. I don’t use the 2nd layer to point to the inner pages of the anchor layer, just the root domain.
I couldn’t reply to your last comment
. anyway, how about backlinks for top ADs, do you link the author profile page or directly to the article?
For article directories, I link to the article because that’s where the link back to the niche site is located.
Pat, thank you for a great article. I have a question for Tom/Jo/Steve/Clif/ or any other contributors who can help:
Once you finish steps 1-6, Pat says we ‘RINSE & REPEAT’. Ok, that’s cool. BUT.. here’s where I’m confused;
Suppose my desired keyword is ‘Green Cockroaches’. This means the URL I want to rank would be insects.com/green-cockroaches. So this is where I’d point my direct layer of links with ‘Green Cockroaches’ as the main anchor text.. yes? Fine.
I’ve got this far.. I get it.
However, what about this business of rinsing and repeating then? If I post another article targeting the same keyword, where will I now point my first layer of backlinks since I now I have another url that is insects.com/green-cockroaches2′. Right? So when I spin this new article and post it to article directories, do I point the links to the new article or the old one?
Also, what sort of frequency should these links be built? Should you be doing 1 wave (steps 1-6) at-least once a week or once a month? If it takes 3 months to rank a new domain.. on average, then roughly how many times should I be repeating this process?
Dennis, congratz on your success thus far!
May I ask – why would you want to post another article on your website which tackles the same topic as before?
With regards to how frequently you should carry out the processes (1 – 6), that’s up to you. The more you do and the sooner you do it, the greater the potential for better results. And providing you are not “attacking” your money site too aggressively with article directory submission backlinks and web2 backlinks etc. then you should be just fine in terms of ranking in Google.
Regards
Joseph
Thank you for getting back to me Joseph. So basically, just to clarify and make sure I have understood this fully;
If I were to ‘rinse and repeat’ the process for the SAME keyword, then I would be required to:
1. Write another article
2. Spin it
3. Post it -not to my site, since I have already tackled that topic/keyword -but to article directories.
4. Skip the creation of new web 2.0 properties & new blogs but add the new article to the existing ones.
5. Use the article for mass article distribution (UAW)
Have I understood this fully?
Many thanks,
Regards,
Dennis.
Dennis, sure sounds like you are very much on the right track – yup!
Joseph
Just wanted to say my article has jumped from 70th (when it was indexed) 4 days ago to 15th after doing the direct layer. Bear in mind my articles from iSnare, ArticleAlley and Ezine haven’t gone live yet. I’m about to start doing the first run of second tier back links and I expect some further movement in the SERPs. Powerful stuff.
I refer back to this site over and over and over. The comments are almost better than the epic post (I assume this qualifies as an epic post, eh pat?). What a winner!
How many times are you suppose to spin 1 article? Or what is the most you can spin 1 article?
I wonder if this technique still works with the last google algorithm update “Panda”.
I hope it works because I just started this strategy.
Thanks for the tutorial.
Hi Wing Tsun
The strategy still works as you’ll see reported here.
best of luck
Thank you
Hi Pat, I love the simple and natural way you blog. I’ve used Spinner Chief to spin articles but it is very difficult to use and the resulting spyntax has been full of errors. I’m seriously looking at the Best Spinner or perhaps outsourcing that part of seo. Would you be able to recommend an outsourcer for the spinning. I find this the most difficult work.
Hey Pat,
Couple tweaks to the newly updated blogs and 2.0 properties list.
wordpress is listed twice, livejournal twice, webs.com twice, newsvine twice.
musocity, blog.maycontainmusic, http://www.zesty-irc.net are closed down.
barnculture is offline. wetpaint and atom.com were a little confusing, couldn’t find anything to sign up for.
Thanks Jay – much appreciated. List has been updated. Cheers!
I’m just curious if you can do more than 1 keyword at a time? Or if you you just go quickly through the steps(is a week too fast?) then start over.
I’m sure this has been touched on, probably buried in the amazing amount of comments on there though!
Thanks in advance for the help.
From another Aaron…
Yes, you can work on more than one keyword at a time. I’m currently working on 8-10 keywords (a few different pages on a couple sites).
As far as how quickly you go thru the steps depends on how new your site is. If you have a completely new site, start fairly slow with links pointing to your money site. However, you can point many links to your anchor layer sites right away (as we target sites that can handle the load.)
Hey man, thanks for the tips. I followed it to the tee and it seems to have worked. Quick (noob) question: On my wordpress site, is it safe to say that I should be approving all the ping back requests? I’m not too sure how this works…
Hi, can I use backlinks genie for the indirect layer instead of unique article wizard?
Great wealth of information. Found that these strategies normally take about a month to start working. Found some additional tips here…. http://www.promostadium.com/How-To-Guide-To-Backlinking_b_48.html
I am in the process of building a semi-authority site. Lets say I have the keyword of diet and my domain is thediethq.com. My main keyword is going to be diet and I will use this strategy to link back to my home page with the anchor being diet correct?
Now lets say I have different pages on my site that such as thediethq.com/southbeach-diet and thediethq.com/nocarb-diet should I repeat this same strategy for every one of the pages if i wanted to target those long tail keywords? (ie. backlink strategy for south beach diet and have all the links point to thediethq.com/southbeach-diet instead of my homepage)?
This is a great post and like one of the commentators said above me, I too come back to this link a couple times a week.
Frank,
Yes, you will want (NEED) to repeat this process for the inner pages (/southbeach-diet, /nocarb-diet, etc) as well. Targeting keywords like diet will definitely take some work.
Good Luck!
Can anybody tell me why the link from my anchor layer didn’t indexed by google?? I’ve checked it on majesticseo and backlink watch. The result is no backlink to my niche site. FYI, I’ve finished built my blogger on January 12 ago. Is it any setting on blogger and other blogs before we pointing the anchor text to our niche site?
Thanks for any reply
Hi Nata
!stly you wont find all links you build using tools. Google simply discounts or doesnot register some. And you’ll get different counts from different tools.
Dont get into the trap of obsessin about each link focus on building more.
Now to diagnosis your problem. Is the blooger site indexed? if its not then google has yet to find it an the link wont count.
If the blooger site is indexed then is th epage your pointing it to indexed?
You will ofcourse be buildin gbacklinks to the blogger site and in time it will be indexed and the link MAY appear in backlink tools.

Thanks very much Pat…… for such an explanatory an informative article on backlinking process. I will certainly follow your guidelines and reply back with results. Take Care
Your podcast (and site I’m sure) are absolutely GREAT!! I just started listening to your podcast and I’m so excited to keep building my brand. You’ve really expanded my mind to what I’m actually Trying to do, I just hadn’t realized it yet!
I’ll get around to Liking, +1′ing, rating on Itunes, commenting, everything I can to help promote you because this is some good stuff.
Keep up the great work and God Bless!
Just noticed that my posts are being liked every time by a blogger who is following several hundred other wordpress.com bloggers.
Is there an automated process for this? I can’t believe she’s putting real time at this.
HELP!! Im having trouble with Step 5: Indirect Linking…Which websites do I create accounts with? And how many spun articles do I use with UAW???
I signed up for xanga and then after posting an article noticed that the link in to my site (when I linked out) had a “no follow” tag added (you have to use one of their forms to post a url). I promptly removed my article and posted it on a wordpress.com site.
The guys on the seo 101 podcast mentioned that a lot of web 2 sites are going “no follow”. Although a no follow may pass a little “link juice”, I don’t think one would want to build up a web 2 property with article backlinks only to get no follow links to your money site. Wordpress.com is ok however I have not tested the others sites mentioned.
I have just started using article samurai does anyone have any test data on it’s effectiveness? I know Pat mentioned trying it out however I have not seen any follow up info.
I would like to know more about this, i.e. which sites use the ‘no follow’ tag. As like you say, it would be better to avoid these. Do you know if blogger and tumblr are ok, as these are the other two I currently use? Need to open more accounts though, so would be good to know which others are ok too really. Thanks for pointing this out.
I would not over fixate on trying to avoid all nofollow links. Natural link building will always have some percentage of links as no follow. If you only have do follow that’s not so great a thing.
Ok you don’t want all nofollow but id have left the one Sean had and just carried on building more posts/links
There are plenty of list of DO follow web 2.o properties on Google just make sure they are current before you dive in.
And i assume you have a plugin such as SEO for firefox that you can turn on. Then just visit somebody else’s existing post on that site to verify dofollow

Google “article directors” and your first result will list the best directories and tell you if they are no follow too.

So I think I’m finally beginning to understand what’s going on here. But I have a couple questions. Okay, I suppose I have a lot more than two questions. I’ve read this page four times now, but I still feel confused on some stuff.
—The backlinks are for the search engines and not really for people to find the spun articles and click on the links to your page. Right? I’m sure that people clicking on those article links directing them back to your site are a bonus though.
If that’s the case then I think I’ve answered my next question.
—Should I create a totally different article to spin when using UAW? Or can I just use the same article that I’ve been spinning and submitting to all the various article directories? At first it seemed odd to me to use the same article, just spun, with UAW that I am using for the article directories, but it makes sense if the main reason is for SEO.
—Do I need to submit more articles to the blogs every time I spin and submit a new article to the article directories? I have about 30 different articles each with unique content but focused around a general theme. Or do I need to create new blogs around the new keyword I’m targeting? I think I saw this answered by the same person saying two different things. So I’m real confused now.
—How many articles can I submit to UAW at a time and still look good in the search engines eyes? If I have 30 articles can I submit an article a day, or is this too much? What if I continue to write 4-5 articles per week, is it okay to submit those articles throughout the week as I finish them?
I think my brain’s gone to mush trying to understand this and answer my own questions. I suppose I shouldn’t of read it so many times in a row. LOL
I really appreciate anyone that takes the time to help me out here. So a future Thank You is in order. I started my first website 5 days ago, when I decided to jump in with both feet, and the learning curve has been steep so far. So thank you very much for holding my hand and helping me here, if you do.
Hi
“—The backlinks are for the search engines and not really for people to find the spun articles and click on the links to your page. Right? I’m sure that people clicking on those article links directing them back to your site are a bonus though.”
Yes the back links to the anchor layer are not for people but to create Link juice down to the anchor layer which it pass to the money site to increase the value of those links. Not really anything to do with ranking either.
The next paragraph is ansered therefore
you ask “Or do I need to create new blogs around the new keyword I’m targeting?” – yes is the answer
“—How many articles can I submit to UAW at a time and still look good in the search engines eyes? If I have 30 articles can I submit an article a day, or is this too much? What if I continue to write 4-5 articles per week, is it okay to submit those articles throughout the week as I finish them?”
If your refering to UAW point to teh anchor layer we dont need to worry to much as were not trying to rank the anchor layer just create backlinks to it were blasting it. DONT do that to teh money site though that would be bad
I know its a mine field. It can be worth scan reading back through the comments, rather than re-reading the article over and over again, as there is a lot of valuable info which will answer questions you’ve not even thought of yet
Do bear in mind that soemthing said 8 months ago might have changed..

Thank you Steve.
I just now noticed that my message is up here on the page. I’ve been checking everyday down at the bottom of the page trying to figure out where it went.
I’m going to go back through the comments again like you suggested. And then I’ll probably be back with more questions.
LOL
I posted a message yesterday, and I don’t know if they need to be approved or what, so if you see two of em pop up then it’s cus I didn’t know.
I’m making more of an authority site. And the content on the site is focused around a general theme. So should I just be using the same blogs to upload spun versions of the articles to each blog every time I use the strategy? Lets say that I spin 30 different articles each with unique content. Should I put those articles into the blogs so I end up with 30 different articles in each blog?
And it’s okay to be using the same articles I’m adding to my site right? Because I’m building backlinks to get the website to the top of google to get traffic and not using those blogs and spun articles to generate the majority of traffic right? Mainly I was a little concerned of people reading the blogs and spun articles and then coming to my site to find the same content. But I’m starting to realize that this strategy is about building backlinks and not traffic. And the traffic comes from being at the top of google correct?
Thanks for the help,
Joshua
P.S. I’m really loving your site Pat. I’ve been devouring the information over the past week. I decided to jump in with both feet 6 days ago and purchased my domain and got it hosted, and your site has kept me motivated. Thank You, Thank You.
Really important point! thebestspinner.com is PC ONLY! I found this out after I bought it. I tried to get a refund but they’re not responding to me. Only $7 but still, I don’t like that they won’t refund and didn’t say anything about no mac version…
I just learned of a program a few days ago called virtualbox. I run Linux and needed to have windows simply so I could run a program that has to do with templates. And I didn’t want to dump everything from my computer just to install windows.
Anyhow,….. It says on their website that it will run on Mac. It’s free and I like it so far. After you get it figured out and installed and you are running your PC software through virtualbox, also known as a “virtual machine”, go to devices and click on install guest additions. This will allow you to do a few other things such as change the screen window size and share documents from the pc software virtual machine to your mac. Also check out the manual, the fourth chapter talks about the guest additions.
If you already have the PC software then it may be worth giving it a try?
This model of link layering is impressive. I’ve read thou that UAW isn’t near as effective as it used to be. Does it matter so much when using it for the secondary layer?
Cheers,
Anthony.
What if I just spent all this time (that it would take me to figure this out) to write 50 solid posts.
Actually, I should just read this when I’m not so tired. Great info!
Hey Brett
Well then youd have 50 articles with nobacklinks and maybe not even indexed by google so no traffic
I get you were being maybe just joking though!
One thing thats for sure is there is a balance. No point in having one page site with 10 anchor layer sites point to it only either.
So some articles and some anchor layers is good.
Dont forget this is not the only way to backlink but it does allow you to blast the anchor layer with cheap links to good effect

Steve–
I thought I got an email notification of a response to my heavy-lidded attempt to comment on this post on backlinking. I’m new to the game and so far, I’ve just read the Copyblogger type of SEO-aware content creation and haven’t thought much of backlinking (outside of commenting on others’ posts, using social media, or maybe posting to Digg or Reddit.
My current blog, also, isn’t a great ‘niche’ site. I have a couple URLs that will make decent niche sites, so I look forward to doing a step-by-step experiment (and hopefully putting 50 solid posts together as I go along because that’s the fun part for me–but I’d love to figure out a way to add pennies to the bank account if I can be useful to folks).
Thanks for this article
