Ridiculous and Interesting Passive Income Topics

I never want to hear anybody say that they cannot possibly come up with an idea for something to sell and succeed with online. The first rule of earning a passive income is: there is absolutely no room for pessimism. This is, of course, unless you’re thinking that the convertible might ruin your hair on the way to dinner.

To sell something online, you don’t have to be an expert at anything. I mean – what is an expert anyways? To many, an expert is just someone who knows more than they do. If you were to go to the bookstore today, pick up a book about fishing for rainbow trout in California, you’d become an expert in the eyes of someone who knows nothing about trout fishing in California.

Now, I’m not saying to sell an information product about something you hardly know about – quite the contrary (although this is possible). Selling something about what you know will be much easier and profitable because you’ll be more passionate about the subject. I’m just showing you that you don’t have to be an expert in your own eyes, in order to be able to provide helpful information to people, who may pay you for it.

A Real Life Example

Let’s take my blog at intheleed.com as an example. Again, it’s a blog I started that contains study material and tips for a specialized exam.

When I started it, I was a total newbie as far as the exam material went. As I learned things, I posted about it. People who visited my site immediately saw me as an “expert”, even before I passed the exam. This was because I knew where to start and how to guide them through the process.

Then, when I finally passed, I was seen as even more of an expert! Did I get a perfect score? No. Were there people who probably knew a lot more than I did at that point? Uhh, yes – most likely. But because I organized the information that people needed, people were listening.

I’ve digressed a little from the point of this post, but I really wanted to prove to you that you don’t need to know everything about something in order to sell a product about it, you just have to know more than others, or at least have that information available. The “others”, in this case, is your target market.

There will always be people who know more than you, but they aren’t who you’re trying to sell to. It’s the people that need your information who you will sell to, and there are some juicy ways to find out exactly who needs what you’re selling, which I’ll talk about in a later post.

The Point of this Post

I just wanted to show you that there are people out there making money selling information products, like eBooks, on subjects that you probably would never even think of. Check these out, and then tell me that there’s nothing that you could sell online (I’ve included the links to the following websites as a reference, not as an endorsement of their products):

Actually, for the subjects above, quite a few of them have similar websites selling the same type of things. I wish I could tell you exact numbers about how much money these websites bring in, but they are paying a lot of money for keywords through Google Adwords, and some of these sites have been up for a long time. It’s my educated guess that they are doing fairly well.

To The Reader

Again, I’d just like to point out that I do not use any of the products from above – really, I don’t.

Before finishing, I’d just like to ask you one simple question: what is keeping you from creating your own product to sell online? There are no wrong answers. It could be anything. Lack of ideas, time, money, family, motivation, whatever. I’m going to review your comments and see if I can address most of the major concerns, and how you can still get things done.

A BIG thank you to all the new readers, as well as any of you who may be pointing towards The Smart Passive Income Blog from your own website. You rule!

It is amazing how varied the internet is and one of the things that I have realised recently is the sheer vastness of it. Since it is so big, there is always someone how there who would want to buy whatever it is you created, therefore, just go and create it to see how it does!

Simple is it? Great post.

I am a fairly successful massage therapist by day. I wonder if I could make an ebook that is a layman’s guide to giving your partner a great massage? Think I would have any takers?

I think my biggest challenge in getting the “bigger” projects done is being able to envision the finished product and really get from here to there. When a project is broken up into attainable goals, it’s easy to see the next goal, but harder to see the bigger picture.

It looks like writing an ebook will be on my list of things to do next year. I have a subject in mind, I just need to figure out how to present the information.

I agree with you 100% Pat. When I started writing for eHow I used to wonder what made me such an expert on the things I was writing about? Then I realized that what set me apart was not that I knew more than anyone else about those topics, but that I enjoyed (and was good at) organizing information.

What holds me back from creating an ebook are two things: 1)time and 2)deciding on a topic.

And Green Ninja, I think you could totally write an ebook about massage. Go for it!

I will agree with the comments from Tight Fisted Miser. I hope to write at least one eBook in 2009 and possibly more depending on my success. I am throwing around a few topics right now with my wife.

FYI – I am going to use the outline you provided in a earlier post. Thanks so much for all the information!!!

Also, don’t be afraid to write an ebook in a very tiny niche. Although eHow writers are indeed a tiny niche, my eHow ebook has been extremely successful for me … even though a competing ebook arrived on the scene only a couple months after I wrote mine. If you over-deliver on content and sell it well, you can be successful in areas you wouldn’t expect.

I see you reference “The Magic of Making Up”. That product does sell well, but anyone trying to promote it now would have too much competition. There are already a lot of affiliates promoting “The Magic of Making Up”, as it is a great product.

After reading through your archives, I feel like I can write a few different ebooks using a similar style that you used with intheleed: start out making a learning tool and then follow up with an ebook. I appreciate your efforts on this blog. It’s full of great tips for earning passive income and it’s super motivational.

Hi! I’m a new reader ! just found your blog last week & I’m finding it very interesting. I know what you mean about there is no need to be an expert but in my case, I have no idea about what to write about :(
Where, how can I find inspiration or ideas?

You are so right Pat, I make money selling one of the products you have mentioned above. I found that peoples illness, particularly an embarrasing one, prevents them seeking advise from friends, relatives etc, and a lot are even embarraased to visit their GP.

Whilst some of you may think that I am making money from peoples misery, it is more a case of the books and information I am supplying are helping lots of people get treatment and even cures for conditions that would otherwise go untreated.

Regards

James…

Hi Pat,

Thanks for all of your helpful information. The thing that’s keeping me from selling an online product is a lack of money. I graduated from college recently and haven’t found a 9 to 5 job. I don’t have a bank account so this isnt a case of having very little money. I have zero dollars. I don’t have many ideas either, but after reading this post, I don’t think I’ll have a problem with that. Thanks for your help.

Hi Pat,

I’m a new reader and found your blog a week ago and am loving it! This is awesome! You’re such a great writer and you have great and simple ideas to pass on to people! Truly an inspiration. Keep up the good work and I’m working my way up to present day! haha :)

I took your advice on writing for eHow (by the way, they’ve opened it up to Canadians now! hurray!), but I got rejected :( . Maybe I’ll try again in a few weeks. I guess it’s fairly competitive now since it’s been around for awhile. Any advice?

After reading a few of the things you wrote about writing Ebooks it motivated me to write one. In fact someone asked me if I ever wrote a book just the other day. One day I would like to write a real book but for now I’ll start with an ebook.

I’d like to have it ready for the beginning of 2012 but we’ll see. I’ve never done that so I’m not really sure how long it will take to have something that I’m comfortable with.
