I like that formula. I can see my problem in my business now. Time to start selling off a few small assets. Thanks Pat for sharing your knowledge. :)

There is a lot of controversial opinions out there, makes it tough to know who to listen to. But I choose to listen to you Pat. :) You are so smart! You separate the men from the boys alright. Survival of the smartest- indeed.

Nice follow-up to your previous post. Focus on a niche market makes a lot of sense, especially in the world of blogging and SEO. The relations you use in your equations work well and make for an interesting new take on a widely discussed topic. Again. nice post. =D

As an engineer by training who has just started my own (unrelated) website, I totally understand the point you are trying to make by drawing parallels with Newton's Laws. One thing I am struggling with is determining just how big is too big for a single market niche.

My site is focused on helping engaged couples and those in their first five years or so of marriage be proactive so they can have an awesome marriage. I think this is an under-served area with a lot of potential for readership, but it does relate to a lot of broad topics (as evidenced by the categories I have developed so far).

This is great for writing since I have many things to write about, but I have to be careful not to get too broad and lose focus on my target audience. That's a tough balance.

I see what you mean, and I think you're right with respect to having different entities and businesses that focus on various niches. Diversification.

However, within each of those businesses, you can't be too broad with your market focus. If instead of starting a blog and writing material for the LEED exam specifically, and I just talked about LEED in general, or even just Sustainability and Green Buildings, or even just Buildings, I can guarantee I wouldn't have made as much as I did in such a short amount of time.

I disagree Pat - I think you should create as many sources of different income as possible. For example, lets say money is water and everyone has a bucket with a 1 inch hole in the bottom. Most people have one standard faucet filling this bucket (their primary job/business) and as water flows in (earnings) some of the water flows out (spending/bills) - the problem with this is, if you lose that one source of water - your bucket will soon be empty. I'd rather have twenty different "miniature" faucets all pouring in from different sources. This way, if I lose one or two sources, I can still keep water in my bucket from the other sources!

I think a book deal would be great for you Pat - you can easily create the next "4 Hour Work Week"

Whatever you decide to do, good luck!
