My Monthly Report – January 2011

passive incomeWelcome to the first monthly income report of 2011!

Every month since October of 2008 I’ve been writing a detailed report about my online earnings. I do this for several reasons:

  1. To help me keep track of how I’m progressing.
  2. To push myself to see improvements month after month.
  3. To lead by example by sharing both my wins and failures.
  4. To inspire.

These reports are less about the numbers and more about what I’ve been up to and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.

I hope you enjoy this month’s report!

Important Going-Ons in January

The most important thing that happened in January (and the thing I’m most proud of too) is the Niche Site Coaching course that Tyrone and I began.

After the success of the Niche Site Duel, we both received so many requests for one-on-one coaching that we decided to do a group coaching course together for a limited number of students.

I had always been opposed to doing private coaching in the past because it’s definitely not a passive form of income. Plus, I figured that my blogging and podcasting was a better way to teach, reach and help a greater number of people all at the same time.

That said, I’m really glad we decided to do this because it made me realize some very cool things:

  1. I had only announced the coaching opportunity twice: once at the end of a podcast session and another in a blog post. From this soft announcement we had over 100 people apply, which may not sound like very many to you, but when you consider that this coaching course was being sold for $799.99, it sort of blew our minds. We eventually decided to keep the course limited to 20 students because we really wanted to focus on these students and help them succeed while not spreading the attention thin. This made me realize how in-demand a coaching program like this really was.
  2. I really enjoy coaching people! Yes – it’s not at all passive and the actual one-on-one interactions can’t really be re-purposed or reused for a passive income later, but the fulfillment factor far outweighs the disadvantages – at least in my eyes so far. To see our students get motivated and really start to take action because of what we helped them understand is a truly an amazing feeling. Now I know why a lot of teachers do what they do – even though they are severally underpaid.
  3. I’m considering doing consulting for those interested in working with me one-on-one in the near future – once my one-year old decides daddy can have some of his daddy time back.

All of our students are AWESOME and actually they’re becoming more than just students now – but friends too.

iPhone Apps

January was a really good month for iPhone apps.

As many of you know, I’m a co-owner of LOLer Apps, an independent two-person iPhone app development team. We’ve had some good success, but because of the recent holiday season we are experiencing exceptional numbers, as you’ll see in the income breakdown later in this post.

People who received an iPhone or iPod Touch as a gift in December are still busy downloading apps. In case you missed the news, the Apple App Store just hit 10 billion downloads.

And, there’s other fantastic news for iPhone app developers to look forward to as well: on February 10th (this coming Thursday), Verizon will launch the iPhone. This is huge because there are a lot of people who specifically did not buy an iPhone because it was for AT&T only. Now that Verizon will be on board, it’s going to open up a whole new market for the iPhone and its apps.

For those of you who interested in getting into the app market, or at least want to hear about my own experiences with it, I recommend you listen to The Smart Passive Income Podcast, Session 14.

Green Exam Academy

January sales for Green Exam Academy, my LEED exam website, had seen an uptick in sales too. Not because of the holidays though, but because the holidays are finally over.

People are getting back from vacation and back into work-mode so it makes perfect sense.

My security guard training niche site had seen an increase in traffic and adsense earnings too – probably for the exact same reasons.

WordPress Plugin Development

This is a topic that I know a lot of you are interested in, especially because it’s a new potential income stream I’m experimenting with and you’ve already heard some success stories from other developers too.

About two months ago, I found two different developers to develop two different WordPress plugins.

One of them fell through because I’ve lost communication with the developer (that happens sometimes). The other plugin was just completed last week and I’m starting to create the site that it’ll be sold on. I anticipate that I’ll miss my February 15th goal, but knowing that the plugin is complete makes me very happy not only because it’s ready to be sold, but because I really want to use it myself too.

I’ll definitely keep you posted.

A Speaking Gig

I briefly announced in my latest podcast session that I’ve been invited to speak live, which I’m really stoked about. It’s for an event by Sterling and Jay from Internet Business Mastery that’ll be happening at the end of April up in Oregon. I’ll get you more details later, but I’ve been itching to speak live in front of crowds again, which is something I did do almost daily back in college – since I was in a leadership position in the marching band at Cal.

I’ll definitely do what I can to speak at Blog World Expo 2011 too – that would be fun!

Okay, it’s time for numbers…

All I can say is WOW! My highest grossing month ever!

This is definitely a great way to start the new year and although about $8k of January’s income came from the split Tyrone and I received from the coaching program (which obviously won’t happen every month), the difference is still significantly higher than last month.

Looking back into previous income reports, you’ll see that a major player in my income as of late has become my affiliate income, which is about 90% directly related to this blog. I just wanted to take a moment to really thank you for all of your undying support. You’re really making an impact on my life and the life of my family as well. Even if you’ve never clicked on any of my affiliate links, just the fact that you’re here reading my content makes a difference and means the world to me.

What I Learned in January

Lesson 1: Always try something new.

This goes along with the new niche site coaching program that Tyrone and I are hosting and how much fun I’ve been having with it, even though it was originally not an ideal business model for me. Because I tried something new, I’ve learned that I like to do private coaching and wouldn’t mind trading my time to help people individually for maybe one day a week. This opens up another avenue of personal fulfillment and a potential income too – although like I said it’ll probably have to wait because my family is always first priority.

Furthermore, the message to “always try something new” doesn’t necessarily mean to experiment with an entirely new business model, but it could also mean to try something new within your existing one. Stepping out of the box and adding variety is a great way to make good things happen and see results. Take bold actions that you’ve never taken before and you’ll reach places you’ve never been before either.

Lesson 2: Work on what matters.

During the middle of the month I was addicted to keyword research.

The first classroom meeting in our coaching program was all about finding a profitable niche, and after that class for some reason I just went crazy with Market Samurai to find some new keywords for potential niche sites.

Looking for new keywords is great and can lead to other income streams, but I should have been working on more important tasks that really mattered – things that have been looming and I needed to get done that can possibly open up bigger and better income streams.

Basically, I was using keyword research as way to make me feel like I was working on something important, when really all I was doing was procrastinating.

Like I’ve said before, there’s a major difference between working on something, and working towards something.

Once I realized what I was doing, I shifted my focus and got a lot more done. It’s okay to lose track sometimes, as long as you get back on as soon as you realize it.

Lesson 3: The more you give, the more you get back in return.

The numbers for this month are incredible. It’s easy to forget, but I have to reiterate the basic philosophy that I’ve been following since the beginning of my online career: the more you give back, the more you get back in return.

Online karma does exist, so work hard now, make the internet a better place and you will be rewarded.

Again, thank you for all of your support and here’s to a happy, healthy and profitable February.

Cheers!

That’s just damn mind blowing. I haven’t ever seen any other bloggers talk about making this much at least not publicly. One of the reasons I like your blog so much man is this transparency.

Pat, how much time you spent on iPhone application? I know you don’t develop, just outsorce. I’m asking because I’m actually in my first week when I gave up studies/day job and I’m trying do be full time independent Android developer (in future iPhone too) – not freelancer, I want to make living from ads and, in future, sells (wish me luck! ;) ). I have 4 free apps (developers from my country cannot sell apps yet) and my income is… well, I’m a bit startled. How much time you needed, Pat, to earn first 1000$ only from iPhone apps?

    Cheers from Poland!

“The more you give, the more you get back in return” That is the key Pat. May the rest of the year follow

    Wow Pat,

WOAH..You must work atleast 12 hour days?

    PAT,
wow, that amount of COIN, in ONE MONTH, that is more than I make in a year as an “ASSISTANT LANGUAGE TEACHER” in Japan. That is INSPIRING,and i love those comments about what you learned…I definitely have to get off my but and get my online efforts going….my motivation is to find a better reirement faclitiy for my mom who is suffering from a version of Alzeheimers…she is in a shared room facility now, but i hope to beable to get her a place where she can have her own room and a private nurse to watch over her…also coin for me to travel to see her more often or heck even actually live back in canada again…perish the thought!!!!

I like the way you report your earning break ups. I even visited your websites on LEED and Security Guard Training. They look awesome.

Keep up the great work and keep motivating me :-)

  • http://www.planetnaveen.com Naveen Kulkarni

I think your earnings signal every online entrepreneur that he should not depend upon single stream for income. I can see your ad sense earnings are the lowest of your earning streams. That might create chills in many online wannabees :-(

  • http://chezfat.blogspot.com Brian

That’s one crazy amount of income Pat – congrats and I’m looking forward to this mystery plugin. :)

  • http://www.bloggerbusinessplan.com Allan

Well done Pat. Congratulations on your best ever month. It’s good to see how you’ve diversified your sources of income and particularly good to see how well the niche site is going.

Good stuff with the iPhone apps. You’ve inspired me to start learning more about that opportunity.

Congratulations, Pat! I agree that you’ve got to give in order to get; you’re a shining example of that. How much of your success do you also attribute to being organized and disciplined?

  • http://www.1a-hundebox.de Christian

    Pat,
You made my day! I really love to follow your blog with tons of very useful tips and hints! Your January income reports inspires me to refocus on things that bring me further. I tend to procrastinate and leave the important things out of sight. I’ve learned again that you will have success in the Internet when you keep focused.
    Thanks again!

Hi Pat, I noticed your Iphone App business is really taking off. Is it too competitive to get into right now in your opinion? Has that ship sailed so to speak much Ehow did.

    • http://www.smallbusinessunleashed.com Chris Green

That ship is in the port ready to go out to sea. I’m sure pat will give you a great answe to your question, but I just wanted to point out that a busy Market is an indication sometimes to jump in rather than stand back and wonder.

    This is awesome Pat!

You just keep on inspiring me. I really love your achievements this month and it is truly the best month ever. I will also be anticipating you launching your coaching/consulting services for this blog because there is a lot to learn from you.

You’re also killing it with your affiliate income and you might want to write a post on it soon.

Thanks so much for sharing your awesome report and keep on rocking!

Pat, you are very organized and I love that from you. You actually inspire me because you are keen on details; especially on the lessons you learnt. I like the “Work on what matters” lesson. Most of us, especially me, do a lot of things that do not add value to our ventures and thats a drag towards what we are trying to achieve.

Congrats Pat, your numbers show that working hard now, pays a lot later.

One question though, how did you earn from 99designs?

    Cheers, and keep it up.

  • http://www.my4hrworkweek.com Eric | My 4-Hour Workweek

Pat, you’re redefining the meaning of CRUSH IT. #4 on your list of why you post your income reports is “to inspire,” and I think you’re doing an excellent job at that.

Congrats. Pretty soon, your “about me” box won’t be able to say, “No, I’m not a millionaire…” :P

    • KimP

Eric said, “retty soon, your “about me” box won’t be able to say, “No, I’m not a millionaire…”

I said this during the end of the year report, and it was the first thought that popped into my head while reading this report.

With the release of TWO new plug-ins and more things to come, I can certainly see this in 2011! Gooo Pat!

    • http://internetstateuniversity.com Brendon | Internet State University

I too have made mention of changing the ‘No, I’m not….”. If his other niche sites perform at the level his current site does he will be thrust into another income level ‘stratosphere’. the way I see it it isn’t a matter of ‘if’ it is a matter of ‘when’.

  • http://dressyourdollinstyle.com bfine

Fantastic month! I’m still working my way up to that. Only about 3 decimal places so far.

Congrats Pat! I was thinking the same thing that Eric mentioned above…..your millionaire status is right around the corner. If you can do $35K in a month, you can do $50K in a month…and then $75K in a month, then $100K in a month. I love watching your business progress and appreciate how you continue to share your lessons learned with your readers. Way to go!

Pat – thanks so much for this awesome information. I was wondering about the cost side of it – to scale your income, your expenses also increase. But I know that you do a lot of the work yourself. Could you share some info on cost/benefit ratio and how your earnings match up to costs? Thanks.

  • http://www.justmyproductreviews.com Michele

    Pat,
I’m just curious..your security guard website….There is a ton of information on that website. How long did it take you to develop this site? Did you have any experience in this field before? Was your purpose to set it up specifically for adsense revenue? I notice you have some links to Amazon too. But it looks like adsense is the major revenue generator.

    Thanks,

Yo, seriously, after reading these reports every month, its becoming more real to me that this is achievable. Before, it was a little intimidating, but its becoming more and more familiar. All I can say too is “WOW”! That’s some great numbers you have there.

I can relate with three things in your article.

Getting caught up every now and then on what is not so important, at least at that point in time.

Online business karma. Provide honest help to people and you will be rewarded more than you anticipated.

Work hard and work some more.

More power to your elbow Pat.

May good things continue to happen to you because you deserve it for being the person you are.

Congrats Pat. You’re hard work and willingness to help others is paying off, it’s really amazing to watch. Like you mentioned in one of your podcasts, helping others does come back to you in positive ways. Web Karma!!

Each month when I read those summary posts on your blog I get this mix feelings – on one hand I think it’s amazing and if I work hard maybe one day I’ll get to the level when I can earn at least @0% of what you make, but at the same time I feel like the amount of work required to get there is much more than I can handle….
Anyway, thanks for sharing those numbers. They are a motivation!

Each month when I read those summary posts on your blog I get this mix feelings – on one hand I think it’s amazing and if I work hard maybe one day I’ll get to the level when I can earn at least 20% of what you make, but at the same time I feel like the amount of work required to get there is much more than I can handle….
Anyway, thanks for sharing those numbers. They are a motivation!

    Pat,

I really do love your blog. However as you and I know, most affiliate marketers lie out of their ass just so people can be impressed by their earnings, and eventually buy their info products. Case in point:

    http://www.tyroneshum.com/i-am-sorry-i-lied/

My question to you is, if you’re confidently posting your earnings..maybe for just 1 month you should post PROOF of each and every earning (screenshots of Adsense acc’t, e-junkie, Paypal, and a verifiable income statements)..You can cross out all the confidential stuff like your name, tax ID, etc. Take a look at how Andrew Warner from Mixergy did it….he actually shows you his Ernst & Young tax reports..This will immensely boost your credibility with your more advanced readers who can see right through all the hoopla.

    Just sayin..

    John

    • sam

      Yes that would be awesome..

    • http://www.JoinShaneWilliams.com Shane Williams

I think he’s provided enough proof. Trying to sniff out the falseness of others, can only be a reflection of our own skeptic behavior, and truly hold no merit. Maybe I’m old school, but I still go by innocent until proven guilty, not the other way around. With his profit break-down alone he has done more than most would dare….or even be capable of doing. Keep tearin’ it up Pat!!!

      • http://www.earnmoneybiz.com Maxjohan

There’s nothing wrong with being skeptic. The only people that thinks that is wrong, is the manipulative pychopaths, and the naive. Seeing that story about tyrone and seeing how many subscribers he got, makes me obvious skeptical about pats income claims, and his four hour working day.

Just because he got passive in the (domain) name, doesn’t mean that he works four hours a day. Making that kind of money working four hour days, as he stated above. “That’s the beauty of passive income” …and that’s also the dream pat is trying to sell us, so it makes perfect sense.

For some, making $20k and lieing about your online income, is better than making $20k and working at McDonalds. I’m not saying that pat is a liar, I’m just saying, that being skeptical is way more rewarding than falling for the psychopaths and their gimmicks.

        • http://www.earnmoneybiz.com Maxjohan

Well, I got to admit I’m a bit paranoid at times. Yesterday was one of those days. If Pat says he’s making $35,000+ a month. He probably does that, there’s just no reason to lie. And, obviously Tyrone Shum isn’t a pychopath. Just my paranoia kicking in, sorry. lol.

        • http://www.digitalhype.ca Emmet

In the past Pat has shown screenshots of my detailed information. For example info on his ebook sales back when Green Exam Academy was his major source, and lately he has shown specifics on the growth of his niche site for security guards.

However, the reality is that Pat has never sold a product of his own saying he makes “this much” income. All he is doing is chronicling his progress and telling you what he is doing. Tyrone has produced is own info products on the other hand.

        • http://www.digitalhype.ca Emmet

Lol, sorry I meant “screenshots of his detailed information”.. :)

Wow, that is truly incredible that you can earn that amount of income from just 4 hours a day! This is a great motivator!

He Pat it’s cool to see how you’re working on so many different income streams. Quick question on the security guard site — how many back links on average do you have to setup on an ongoing basis to move the site up the first page of google? I’m just starting out myself and am trying to gauge the amount of work this will take.

I just wanted to suggest you that in order to be fair with the name of your blog, you should reconsider counting the course income as PASSIVE income, keeping the total number pure, as it is equally impressive. Regards, Pablo

Hi Pat, started visiting your site this month and very impressed with your results. I have couple web properties earning with adsense as much as yours , and looking at your other income streams I realize that I have to focus on affiliate marketing then building other streams as well.
