SPI 056: LinkedIn, Likability and Leveraging Your Affiliates with Lewis Howes

The Smart Passive Income Podcast Logo

In this session of The Smart Passive Income Podcast, by special request, we’re bringing back a guest that I’ve had on the show before. Several people have asked me to bring back many of our previous guests, such as Dane Maxwell from Podcast Session #46, which was the most downloaded SPI Podcast to date. I do plan to bring him back, along with some of the students from his training program that are doing some phenomenal things.

Today, however, I’m happy to welcome back a great friend of mine and a great friend of the SPI community, Lewis Howes from LewisHowes.com.

Lewis is doing some amazing things right now in his life and business. In this session, we talk about many different topics; from LinkedIn, to affiliate marketing, relationship building and even his role as a member of an Olympic team!

It’s as if we were just chillin’ together at a cafe having coffee, which actually did happen last month. :)

More specifically, in this session you’ll find out about:

  • How Lewis got started on LinkedIn.
  • Why LinkedIn is powerful and how people who are not using LinkedIn effectively are missing out.
  • Tips for optimizing your LinkedIn profile.
  • The #1 thing you MUST do on LinkedIn in order to be successful.
  • Emailing a group on LinkedIn vs. emailing your regular email list and the benefits of each.
  • How Lewis and others are making money from LinkedIn.
  • What someone has to do to be likeable.
  • Lewis’ interesting response to the question regarding why he thinks he’s so likeable.
  • Tips for finding great affiliates, and how to get them to go all out when promoting your products.
  • Lewis’ first business adventures with inventions.
  • The struggles Lewis had bringing in money and the best advice he received for making money online NOW.
  • The new podcast Lewis just launched and who he has coming on as a guest.
  • Lewis’ goal of getting into the Olympics on the U.S. handball team.
  • Plus a whole lot more…

Great Pat! Is there a picture of the desk?!!

  • http://wpthemesdaily.com Robert

Awesome podcast as always :) I haven’t been participating in LinkedIn actively, it’s a great advices and experiences. :)

    • http://pagerankworld.com/ Brandon

This makes me wonder… I made a LinkedIn profile such a long time ago, like a year ago, and basically abandoned it because at the time I didn’t have any connections or people to connect with. Maybe I should spend an hour or so this weekend looking into it and re-connecting/connecting with my current associates. It can’t hurt right?

  • http://www.brettb.com/ Brett

Apparently I’ve got 7 3rd degree connections to Lewis on LinkedIn. Small world isn’t it?

    • http://whyarepeoplelefthanded.com Vince @ Why Are People Left Handed

We are all connected eventually lol Social Networks have proven this theory! How many time have you noticed a mutual friend that you had no idea existed? Pat, another other podcast!

Excellent advice… I just created a LinkedIn group and am looking forward to connecting with people and helping them out with their questions!

    Thanks Lewis/Pat!

Great podcast guys! I had no idea there was so much potential with LinkedIn!
Lewis really is “so disgustingly likable” haha. Seriously though, there is a ton of great stuff in this one. I really appreciate the straight forward and tell-it-like-it-is approach that Lewis has. Great tips on relationship building too!

    Pat –

Thanks for this great info as usual!

Just a suggestion – could you rename your transcripts so that they have more useful titles?

    e.g. SPI056-Likein_LinkedIn.pdf

Pat, I’m sure you hear this a lot, but you have certainly earned a new fan in myself. First, I started reading your blog, loved what you were putting out, and now I’m a subscriber to your podcast as well — I listen on my walk to and from work, every day.

    Keep up the awesome work.

Thanks Pat for the podcast. Learned a nugget or two. Will definitely be starting a group in Web Design to grow my business. I’m five years behind in building my email list. Gotta get that started this week. You rock. Thanks for the motivation.

This is great information, and I have enjoying using Linkedin. Though, after listening to this took away tons of thoughts to apply!

Also enjoyed the handball highlights, funny thing I am sure many Americans know much about handball.

    Thanks for so much information,

P.S. I am just sad that Linkedin cancelled Linkedin Answers

Hi Pat. I am a nurse and I enjoy your blog. I can tell you that sitting down more than a few hours every day is extremely bad for you. Several reputable studies show this. Check out this New York Times article http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/17/get-up-get-out-dont-sit/

Hi Pat. I am enjoying your blog. I am a nurse and I have noticed many recent health articles from reputable sources that speak of the evils of sitting too much. Its actually really bad for you. Great podcast. Lewis got me started on LinkedIn after hearing a webinar with him on it about a year ago.

I also started reading your blog about a year ago and love it. I have learned a lot. Keep up the great work.

Pat, I’m loving your latest podcasts. This one encouraged me to go back and update my LinkedIn Profile and look at the groups I’m a part of.

After those simple steps, I posted my latest post to a large group and already started seeing traffic. Definitely something I’m going to focus on going forward.

Thank You Very Much for posting this.. :-)

I recently started using Linkedin at my current job. It’s pretty interesting to see just how many people you can potentially network with. I will be honest and say I haven’t listened to this particular podcast yet – still playing catch up with your last one. However, I’m going to tomorrow at work! I’m sure I’ll enjoy it. :)

  • http://www.partialpassiveincome.com Partial Passive Income

Good stuff. I will be spending a couple of hours in train in the weekend. Seems like a good opportunity to get around this podcast..

Great show. I am loving the weekly episode – keep them coming and big up for taking the plunge. Loved this episode in particular: great advice on getting connected, on charisma, and giving your network value. On the topic of charisma I suggest you get hold of Olivia Fox Cabane. Keep rocking it!

What a terrific podcast! Lewis blew my socks off during the podcast on webinars. The amount of information he gave away was amazing. And now here he is again doing the same thing for LinkedIn.

I didn’t know a lot about LinkedIn before this. Not even sure if I had an account. But after listening to this podcast and taking notes I realiize how much I’m missing out on.

Great job. And I agree with Lewis, Pat, that the amount of valuable information you provide during these podcats is priceless. Thx again.

  • http://williamlfletcher.com/ William

    Hey Pat,

I love the new weekly format! Hopefully you will be able to stick to it, weekly seems so demanding for producing a podcast. I definitely want to try out standing up when I record to see how it effects my energy levels. It certainly makes since. Anyways, keep up the good work.

  • Steve

My takeaway…your biggest competitive advantage can be *deeply caring* about those you serve. Thanks Lewis!

Off “Linked-In topic” question for Lewis, but dialed in to everything you’re doing online… as a publisher, what do you suggest as best ways to structure partnerships when you promote an expert? For example, an expert in _____ (say the next big social site…) is someone you know could help people. They want to partner with you & Sean to help get their expertise (their product with you in it) to market faster. Do you own all rights for 3 years & they cut big % or how does that work? Thanks for all the great wisdom!

  • Reggie

I can’t believe no one mentioned this yet… Doug is the best cartoon ever! You just got even more awesomer, Pat

  • http://www.socialmedialatest.com jay venka @ social media latest

Linked in can be the field for the pro, its hot and its a “no fluff” network where we don’t see cat videos or memes haha :)

I also feel its less harnessed by marketers so its high time to get into linked in 2013!!

    Thanks pat and Lewis howes.

Hi Pat, I notice you don’t have a visible “posted on” date at the top of your blog posts. Is this strategic? The reason I ask is because I find myself looking for the date on your posts just to see how current it is. But then again, not having the date easily visible might be a good thing (i.e. not having the date determine the value of the content presented). Just curious.

  • http://www.graphicblueprint.com Brandon Halliburton

    Awesome Post.

I love LinkedIn. I appreciate what you do with Lewis Howes every time.

He helped me leverage my linked in profile in to two dream jobs. Go figure.

Also, I would love to see you have Leslie Samuels back on your show. I think he has some amazing insight and I love the input.

I look forward to seeing you in San Diego.

Very insightful information here, Pat. LinkedIn certainly isn’t as “glamorous” as Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest, but it is a wonderful networking tool for professionals. As a manager whom often neglects his profile, it’s important to recognize that this is a reflection of yourself in a professional environment. Thanks for the reminder!

Now… off to update my profile..

  • http://thelatestarter.com/ Eden

I was on Linkedin until I started being stalked by some freak who had been tracking me down and I found out had been viewing my profile. Would go back on but I closed my account. Damn!

Hi Pat & Lewis- awesome interview. Thanks for putting that together and sharing insights. Guess I’m in this online thing for the long haul… ! One podcast a week minimum. Better go download some more… lol

Pat, this is my new favorite podcast. I signed up for Lewis’ email updates. You continue to provide hugely valuable info Pat! Thanks much!

This was an eye opening podcast. I knew LinkedIn was important, but didn’t know how best to use it or how flexible it is. I will start working on building a profile there. Also I visited Lewis Howes’ site and was really inspired by the $22,000 weekend post. It is a great model for launching a new service or product. Thank you!

I knew that joining LinkedIn was a good idea, but you opened my eyes to benefits that I had never considered, thanks.

Lewis should also talk about his video product- Video Traffic Academy, which was a hit and it still is a great selling product on Clickbank that has helped a lot of people.

    hey Pat,

    congrats for the podcast…

I wonder why not add a SlideShare presentation for readers to check out?

this way you’re not only getting more traffic/views and time spent on site from SlideShare/visitors checking the built-in SlideShare PDF, but at the same time, provide users with a fast reading experience (hint — they won’t have to download and open the transcript, everything will be there for the taking)…

    Sounds good? :)

Re: Handball – Handball is pretty popular in at least some South American countries. My wife is from Paraguay, and she played through high school as the goalie. The irony is that the girls play handball there because the boys don’t let them play soccer, but handball is 10x more brutal!

I don’t want to play handball with girls – I’d never want to play with huge, beefy guys like Lewis!

  • http://www.passiveproductive.com Sam Matla (Passive Productive)

Thanks for the great podcast, Pat.

Lewis Howes sounds like an amazing guy. In terms of LinkedIn I’m in a similar position to you, I’ve got an account and I accept connections – I’m not involved in the site that much. I plan to change that though!

  • http://www.internetentrepreneurconnection.com Hector Avellaneda

Very cool podcast Pat. I was checking out Lewis site while I was listening to the podcast and thought it was kind of interesting that his products were related to social media marketing but yet he seems to be in the Health in Fitness niche.

I really like the recognition incentives that Lewis give to his affiliates. It’s alway great to win a prize but if you can be in the top five and receive recognition for making the most sales, then you must be on to something. I agree with Lewis, I think at the end of the day people are looking for that recognition to be able to be seen as ‘expert’ or a go-to in business.

I’m like you, I havent been on linkedIn as much as I would like to but I think it may be time. :)

    Hi Pat,
as always, you have really great and inspiring speakers on your blog and Lewis is definetely one of them.

    Hi Lewis,
I promise, if the US handball team makes it to the Olympics in 2016, I’ll be there with my son. He is 17 and very engaged in handball in France (player on a regional level, coach, referee) and knows a lot about the French team and handball in Europe. So if you have a question, just connect with him on Facebook (he would be proud to have a future Olympics player amongst his friends). His facebook adress: http://www.facebook.com/thomas.gruenbeck
On the photo, he is with Jerome Fernandez (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%A9r%C3%B4me_Fernandez), captain of the french national team.
He would be very delighted, if you connect.
Cheers and every success in your preparation.
    Just Do It.
