How to Create a Facebook Page and Landing Page – Updated with Code & PSD Files

How to Create a Facebook PageOne of the most popular blog posts I’ve ever written was THE Blogger’s Guide to Facebook. It has been viewed over 20,000 times and the videos within that post have accumulated over 120,000 views.

Unfortunately, those videos are now outdated. Facebook, as many of you know, loves to update and change things around – so my walkthroughs for creating a Facebook page and creating a Facebook landing page are a bit off.

Several people have requested that I reshoot these videos and publish updated versions.

I just finished, and here they are!

Below, you’ll find updated videos on how to create a Facebook Page, as well as how to create a Facebook Landing Page.

If you have yet to utilize Facebook for your blog or business, you’re falling way behind. There are now over 500 million users active on Facebook and every month people spend a total of over 700 billion minutes on it (see Facebook Statistics).

Craziness.

For me and my own businesses, Facebook has become one of my top traffic sources (2nd only Google), and it has helped me connect with my audience in a way that no other platform has. On my Facebook Page (now 5,060 fans strong) sometimes I can ask for an opinion or pose a question and within minutes I’ll have 10 to 20 responses, and within a day I’ll have up to 50 or 100. In the past, companies would pay top dollar for an honest response from an audience like that, which is exactly why today you’ll see that most companies, big and small, are setup with their own Facebook pages too.

If you haven’t already set one up, now you can – for free!

If you do already have a page, I still recommend that you watch through these videos because I’ve added a few tips and tricks that will maximize your Facebook efforts, and you may end up changing a thing or two (see the image at the very top for a preview).

At the bottom of this post, you’ll also see some downloadables. These are the PSD files that go along with the videos, and the code for your landing page as well.

Enjoy the videos!

Pat, this post is perfectly timed. I have been researching information on how to do this for the past week and there weren’t any great sources. I’ll comment with a link like you requested once.
I haven’t made my FB page live yet because it’s not finished, do you recommend that I make it live before I have it finished, or should I wait to maximize the 1st impression of people joining?

Thanks,
Matt

Pat January 24, 2011 at 11:08 am

Awesome Matt – I’m glad I posted this at the right time for you. Usually, I could recommend just going live, however with a Facebook Page specifically I think one should make sure they have a landing page setup first because it’ll be a much better first impression than just sending people to your wall. Cheers!

Hey Pat!
As you will know shortly or already do, facebook is pushing all the pages to upgrade.
Which really is like the new profile. It was said it was supposed to help interact with the business or what ever the page is for. But truly for something not well known its not help. It moves the info which helps being on the front page to just a tab. Is there a way to make a page from the new update? It removed my FBML tab when updated.
Thanks!

All I got to say is THANKS PAT – You rock man.

Pat – I spent about two hours scouring through Google and nobody, I mean nobody… seems to be able to explain how to html your own Facebook page in a clear way. That is, except for you. And the video, that made all the difference. I mean, some things just make sense more if you can see it in action!

Also, great tip on the pointing the arrow to the “like” tab at the top of Facebook page – I’ll be adding that to my page shortly.

Anyway, just wanted to say thanks Pat and I’ll be following your blog.

Hi. I have a simple question. Do you really think that a landing page is a good idea? Why do you use it? It is one step more for customer to get to your facebook page. Thanks for an answer and excuse me for my poor English.

Pat January 24, 2011 at 11:12 am

Reply

Absolutely! It’s a must. The landing page is ON the Facebook page so it’s not an extra step, it’s a BETTER step, if that makes sense. Otherwise, people would come to your wall which has no clear call to action or introduction.

Chris Alta March 3, 2011 at 4:54 pm

Lukasz!

I’ve yet to create a nice looking facebook landing page but I can already see from pages that do have thousands of likes, that the one thing they have is an attractive landing page! This gives a clear call to action and even if you might think “oh well if they like my page then they’ll click the like button” wrong! I’ve liked a lot of facebook fan pages but it just goes right past my brain to actually like the page sometimes, so you need to have that clear call to action.

And as Pat said it’s not an extra step but a BETTER step. Also what I’ve been seeing some fanpages do is only have 1 tab showing which is the Welcome page which gives you the call to action. The only way you can get updates and interact with the community is to click the like button. So in a sense you’re kind of enticing people to click the like button!

hope this helped yo! Cheers!

I was just wondering Pat, how do you put the curvature into the image?

Chris Alta March 3, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Anthony what’s up man!?

I’m not too sure how Pat did this but I have an idea. He probably created one huge black template, then added his picture and the text above and below. Then he just used a circular tool to crop out that round part of the image as a whole.

Then he split the image in two so that he could have his profile image, and then the image for his landing page. Then once he uploaded them it blended in nicely.

I’m sure it wasn’t that easy but it’s just a thought! Give it a try and see what happens yo!

cheers!

Great info Pat! But just wondering, would you still recommend creating a facebook fan page even for a newish blog? My site still has a relatively small number of rss subscribers and I feel like it’s almost counter productive to have a facebook page when you’re only going to have a couple fans. ie my parents and several close friends.

Pat January 24, 2011 at 11:20 am

Reply

I would create one right from the start – you never know when you could have new readers or people share your blog content to obtain new readers that could then become fans. Plus, once it’s setup you don’t need to worry about it anymore when your blog gets big and you’ll wish you have had it done already :P

Chris Alta March 3, 2011 at 5:03 pm

Paul!

I thought I’d answer your question from the perspective of someone who’s fairly new to the blogosphere too. You should ABSOLUTELY create a facebook fan page. I created a facebook fanpage but it isn’t super top notch YET.

Same thing goes for your newsletter opt in. I launched my blog January 1, 2011 and got 349 visitors that month, then this past month I got 1,049 visitors. Imagine if I’d put an opt in on my blog? I could have probably had at least 25-50 subscribers to my newsletter but since I didn’t get it done I lost some great people who were probably interested in my blog and what I had to offer, but since I didn’t give them an option they left.

So always give your audience options to connect with you! Hope this answered your question in a little more depth!

cheers!

Really good stuff. Took some of your tips and applied them to my fan page. I especially liked the profile picture alignment trick. Having my main picture clipped when I posted updates in my wall always annoyed me.

Also, didn’t realize that they lowered the number of fans you needed to get a friendly url for your fan page. When they initially rolled this feature out they kept sliding up the minimum requirements.

As usual, you provide the information people want and need to know. Thanks for helping me take my facebook fan page to the next level!

There are lots of resources out there about opt-in boxes, and cool engaging scripts for the welcome FBML tab though… I can e-mail you some for review if you want.

Pat, I think we’re going to need a small Photoshop tutorial. I know what you’re talking about in the videos, but why is Photoshop so hard to use? LOL

Ah, here we go! It’s a bit crude, because it’s been trial by fire all morning and afternoon. I finally got it down. I don’t even own this site, but get all the admin perks. :-)

I’ve been reading the blog for a few months now and love it, but have yet to post. It sounded like you said what is shown in your thumbnail picture is dictated by a specific place in your full picture. You can actually edit-ish your thumbnail picture! You can make it show any part of your main fan page picture.

Hover over the picture and click “Change Picture”. A drop box should appear with the option of “Edit Thumbnail”. When the box pops up you can just drag the picture around until what you want to show is visible.

You can use the same technique with your profile picture. Hope that’s helpful.

I am using Photo Bucket and uploaded our picture for our landing page. How do I use your template so our picture will fit entirely on our landing page? I cannot figure out how to put the two together.

Good artlcle. I’ve played with my landing pages some but they’re in need of update.

The one thing I’d add is that you can change your thumbnail for your profile picture pretty easily. If you hover over the image after it’s uploaded, and click on “Change Picture” some options will come up and second from the bottom is “Edit Thumbnail.”

You’ll be able to choose any piece of the image you want, top or bottom. to use as the thumbnail. Less restricting than mapping what you to show up as the thumbnail to a specific part of the image.

Thanks Pat,
I’m presenting a seminar to the local Chamber of Commerce soon and these two links explain the process better than I could ever do. The students will have a link to take home for reference. Great job.

Hi, this video is great!! thanks for posting it.

just wondering if you could help me to only allow people who ‘like’ my page to access the information and those that don’t choose to ‘like’ restricted from viewing everything other than the welcome/landing page.

Love your work Pat! Our blog is just starting out and this is our first attempt at a landing page. Through a lot of trial and error we also managed to get some clickable links in it as well. I think we can do better but it’s a good start I think…

Hi Pat, great article, thank you very much for sharing this information and taking the time to create those videos.

One little thing though: If you edit your profile picture, you can edit your thumbnail from there, so I don’t think it’s necessary to position your face/logo in any specific area in that image. Does this make sense?

My apologies if someone already mentioned this in the post comments.

Thanks again!

I was wondering if you or anybody else knew if Facebook allows us to put Google Adsense on a fbml application (not neccesarily the landing page)?

Thanks!

hi Pat – am working on this fb fan page for a friend – facebook.com/glengardengifts.

She’s got the new fb layout and I don’t see how to reset the default open page to the welcome page – I’m not seeing it on the permissions page. Anyone have any ideas?

Thx, mike

Hi Pat,

Great resources ever had.
I wonder what tools you re using your Video with that gorgeous pen,
Is it Screencast or Camtasia?

Thanks In advance
Regards.

Hi Golgota – I’m using Camtasia, but you can use Screencast as well. The secret is a free tool called OmniDazzle that allows you to draw on the screen. Cheers!

Hi Pat,
Thanks for the feedback, unfortunately, OmniDazzle is only for Mac and not for Windows, I’ve search through and there was no Version for windows..

Great Video!! Quick question… I did select to make my “welcome tab” as my landing page … but no matter how much I try it never lands there….suggestions

Pat February 1, 2011 at 6:11 pm

Reply

Hey Ronnie – if you’re an admin of your page or already a person who ‘likes’ it, it bypasses the welcome page. That’s done automatically by Facebook, because when you think about it, you don’t want to welcome people and try to get them to become fans when they are already a fan. Cheers!

That’s the best information I’ve ever seen for this. I just started a page using this info. You can no longer choose your landing page using this info but setting up everything following your instructions made this whole thing a breeze.

Thank you!

one little thing though. i dont have the standard facilty to make my welcome page my landing page…so i was following your instructions right up to the point where i get the page url and copy it to word pad…and to begin with i was thinking that was the end and it would become my landing page, but it hasn’t. i couldn’t help thinking that after i’d copied that url there should be something else for me to do with but you gave no more instructions. Hope you understand what i’m trying to say..short version: help please.

After you get the URL from the FBML application in Facebook, you can use it to promote your Page wherever you’d like. On your website, on twitter, etc. People who click through to that link will go to your landing page.

thanks Pat. we were at cross purposes. it works exactly as you say.

However what i was hoping and thinking it would do is: when someone searches me on FB then clicks on on my profile it takes them to my wall, what i wanted to do was take them to my welcome page – can that be done?

Good morning Pat!

Well it took me almost 9 days of toil (mostly learning a little gimp), but I’m finally pleased enough to post the first draft of my fan page.

To be honest I really never used facebook to promote my site until you opened my eyes to the opportunities I was missing out on. The link’s still UGLY, but I should hit the 25 fans needed to customize that soon. :)
