pat-flynn-facebook-pictureFacebook. I hear that word everywhere now: on the radio, on television, and even in conversations while I’m standing in line at the grocery store. Facebook seems to be taking over the world…and judging by the numbers, that statement isn’t that far off.

  • Over 300 million active users (that’s one for each U.S. citizen!)
  • An Alexa ranking of 2, just behind Google.
  • The fastest growing demographic is people age 35 and older.
  • People spend an average of 20 minutes a day on Facebook.

A couple of notable points here:

  1. That’s a LOT of people. A lot.
  2. The fastest growing demographic (35 years and older), is probably the same demographic that has and is spending the most money.
  3. Guess what the average time people spend on a given website is…10 seconds. Facebook: 20 minutes.

Ridiculous numbers. Ridiculous.

I guess this is why we’re seeing more and more companies today ditch the website address on commercials and are putting in their Facebook addresses instead. It makes perfect sense, and it’s a sign that we should be doing the same thing. Click to continue…

online-entrepreneur-testImagine you’re in this scenario:

You have an online business as a graphic designer coach, which means you teach other graphic designers how to make money with their talent. You have a coaching program that has videos and tutorials about how to contact potential clients and really expand their own freelance graphic design business.

To promote your $497 coaching program, you decide to hold a free webinar where you’ll be giving a short presentation and then pitching your course to whoever is watching. 300 people come online to watch your presentation. At the end of your extremely helpful and convincing webinar, you tell your audience about your coaching program, why it will sky-rocket their graphic design business, and where to get it. You also tell them that if they have any questions, to shoot you an email. You go to bed with dreams of seeing an inbox full of transactions in the morning.

You wake up to see that you have 75 unread messages in your inbox! Payday baby! But wait…

You open your inbox to see that you’ve only sold 4 programs, and the other 71 messages are questions from the webinar. 71 emails that you have to go through, some of which are a bit lengthy.

At this moment, how you would feel?

Go ahead, really think about it for a second… Click to continue…

Blog BarHere’s a short but powerful post I’ve been wanting to write for a long long time. It starts with an analogy:

A blog is like a bar.

Let’s say we own a bar together. Without people actually coming into the bar, there’s really no point in having it. Right? It’s the customers who come inside that will make us successful. This is why that online, everything is traffic this, and traffic that. More traffic is what everyone wants and people are paying BIG MONEY for it. There’s so much talk about traffic, search engine optimization, keyword research and advertising, that many people often forget about the second part of the equation, which is what happens when people finally arrive to the “bar”? Sadly, many of those people (often paid for through advertising or pay-per click), just leave and never come back. What a waste… Click to continue…

every-action-opposite-reactIn order to understand fundamentally how the world works and how things move and interact with each other, you have to understand Physics. It’s the same thing for business – in order to understand it, you must break it down and try to figure out how each part interacts with each other. Luckily, there are laws for business like there are laws for Physics that can help us understand.

If you’ve been keeping up with my latest posts, I’ve been comparing Newton’s Laws of Motion to some things I’ve learned about doing business online. I’ve had a lot of fun with the first and second laws, and I’m excited to conclude with the third and final law today. Click to continue…

In my previous post, I presented my First Law of Business and Success, which again was the following:

“Any business in a state of uniform motion tends to remain in that state of motion unless an external force is applied to it.”

Basically, whatever state your business is in, it’s going to stay that way unless something happens. If you don’t have a business or business isn’t going well, nothing good will happen unless you do something about it and take action. If business is going well, your job is to make sure no negative external forces come by and change things for you.  If you didn’t make the connection already, I’m using Newton’s Three Laws of Motion, but relating them to businesses (which include blogs, relationships, your job, whatever). A better title for this 3-part series may be: The Physics of Business. A nice book title if you ask me (dibs). Click to continue…

affiliate-networksThere’s a lot of debate whether or not a person who has a blog or does any kind of social media type affiliate marketing online should hide or disguise their affiliate links. I’m interested to hear what you think, but let’s talk more about it first.

For those of you who don’t understand, affiliate marketing is where individuals promote a business (or products of a business) in exchange for a percentage of the sales they generate. The actual affiliate link is the link on the individual’s website that points people toward the other business’s product or service. Normally, the link will have some sort of identification tag on the end that helps the business identify who is bringing in the leads and how much commission they will have earned. internet-marketing-triple-threatIt doesn’t matter what industry or niche you’re in – different people prefer different ways of learning. If you can cater to each of these types of people, you will not only expand your customer base to those who wouldn’t normally purchase from you, but you’ll give those who would of purchased from you anyways the tempting option to send a little more cash your way.

There are three basic methods to learn new material: reading, listening, and watching. Keep in mind that particular order. While doing business online, we can cater to those who prefer each of these methods by creating eBooks, audio products, and video, respectively. Click to continue…

the-one-thing-you-absolutely-need-succeed-onlineI’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: you can have the best products or services in the world, but without marketing your business will fail. In contrast, if you’ve got the marketing part down, you can sell ice to Eskimos.

We easily can see just how vital marketing is to our online businesses. Some may argue that it’s even more important than what the business actually has to offer. If it’s that important, then why do so many people go into business without a marketing plan? I can think of three reasons. Click to continue…

promoting-testimonialsIt’s one thing to say your product or website is great, but your credibility reaches a whole new level when someone else says the same thing.

Promoting testimonials and proof that your material is worthwhile and definitely something you should showcase whenever possible. If there’s a customer who may be right on the edge of buying your product or a reader who may be thinking about subscribing to your email list, proof of other people’s satisfaction and success could be that little nudge for them to click “add to cart” or enter their email address.

Here are some ways you can think about promoting your own website or products that truly work. Click to continue…
