Back in 2008 when I first started experimenting with generating passive income online, I was introduced to eHow.com and it’s writer’s compensation program. It seemed very intriguing, especially after hearing that some people were making over $1000 a month on residuals from ad clicks on their articles, so I decided to give it a shot myself.

In November of 2008, I wrote a total of 150 articles for eHow just to see what would happen. In November of 2008, I netted a total of $18.99. That’s a whopping 13 cents per article, and considering that each one took me about 30 minutes to complete, we can say that I was making 26 cents per hour.

But, as with all passive income generation, it’s not about the immediate payoff. We can’t expect to see results right away, which is why I think a lot of people think that generating a passive income is difficult and they just give up. It’s tough when we live in a generation where we’re used to things to happening immediately.

That being said, my work finally paid off because in each consecutive month after November 0f 2008, I earned an average of about $165.00 per month from the same batch of articles without doing any additional work. To date, that’s about $3000 total which turns that 26 cents per hour into about $40 per hour. If only I continued to write for eHow, I could have joined the $1000+ per month club.

I would like to get back to writing articles for eHow to increase my monthly income, however that’s impossible now that eHow’s Writer’s Compensation Program is closed.

Like myself, many people have been searching for an alternative to write content for and share in advertising revenue. I’m hoping that the following list of sites (some of which you may have never heard of before) will help you figure out what your options are and give you a nice hub to compare and contrast these sites before you potentially invest your time and future articles into them.

The graphs below illustrate the Alexa ranking for each website. The Alexa Traffic Rank reflects the number of visitors to a website, as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those visitors based on three months of aggregated traffic data. It’s a good indicator for the overall health and growing trends of these websites, which is why I included them below.

1. Associatedcontent.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 553

Ad Revenue / Income: $1.50 – $2.00 per 1000 Pageviews (PPM). Learn more…

US Only: No, but: “Apparently non-US writers must apply to join a group writing on a specific topic and fill in a US tax form to be paid. They then state that they will retain a portion of money earned in case tax is payable.” (source: WebUpon.com)

My Thoughts: I know quite a few people who write for AC and are happy with it, but most are long time established AC writers who already have high ranking articles. For newcomers, $1.50 per 1000 Pageviews seems a bit low, at least to me, especially considering that one Adsense click could potentially earn you that much on your own website, depending on the niche you’re in or what ads are generated.

2. ArticleIncome.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 128,321

Ad Revenue / Income: 50-75% (50% for new users)

US Only: no

My Thoughts: The Alexa ranking is not all that impressive, and a higher one could be achieved simply by creating your own blog and writing content for it every day. The potential Ad Revenue is attractive (up to 75%), but for newcomers you’re going to start at the baseline 50% ad share. Personally, I’d look for another website to invest my time into, one that has seen more growth as of late.

3. Bukisa.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 5,232

Ad Revenue / Income: “Bukisa Index” per 1000 visitors. (i.e. if Bukisa Index is 4, then you get $4.00 for every 1000 Unique Human Visitors). Today, the Bukisa Index is 3.22, which means you’ll get $3.22 per 1000 visitors, for today.

US Only: no

My Thoughts: I first heard of Bukisa as an alternative to eHow back in 2009 when there were some issues regarding eHow deleting people’s articles without warning. There are a ton of related forum threads on eHow.com about it, and it seems like some people are happy switching over, while others are not. The unique ad sharing model which utilizes the “Busika Index” is, well, interesting to say the least. The exact process about how the index number is decided is unknown, which makes me a little hesitant because at any moment it could change and drastically impact your earnings (one way or another). Check out the crazy growth in the first half of 2009.

4. Ethorities.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 1,462,872

Ad Revenue / Income: undisclosed

US Only: undisclosed

My Thoughts: This is a WordPress site using a WooTheme to create a how-to article site. Great idea, however it doesn’t seem like there is much activity, and nothing to really make it stand out amongst the rest of the listed sites.

Alexa graph unavailable.

5. Factoidz.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 23,762

Ad Revenue / Income: undisclosed

US Only: no

My Thoughts: Although Factoidz is relatively new, it already has a reputation online as a decent space to write content online. It’s known for it’s rigorous editing and article reviewing process, which is good for the overall content of the site. As far as ad revenue, I couldn’t find any information about this, but it seems like most people are happy and don’t complain about it. There is potential here, I think.

6. Firehow.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 90,536

Ad Revenue / Income: undisclosed

US Only: yes

My Thoughts: With a clean looking website, Firehow looks promising, however I couldn’t find any information about their ad revenue model, which I know people are interested about. The Alexa ranking isn’t anything to be excited about, but there is a lot of room for growth in the future. It will be interesting to see where Firehow ends up.

7. Helium.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 1,742

Ad Revenue / Income: Based on level of activity and value you bring as a writer signified with “Stars”. See their Terms of Service (#5) for more information.

US Only: no

My Thoughts: This is the first time I’ve heard of helium, but the Alexa ranking and consistent growth of the site is definitely attractive. However, the revenue structure is a bit confusing and I know (based on eHow history) that people want to know exactly how their income is earned.

8. HowtoArticles.net

Alexa Ranking Today: 464,469

Ad Revenue / Income: undisclosed

US Only: undisclosed

My Thoughts: Doesn’t seem like it would be worth investing your time and articles into. Looking at the homepage, it doesn’t look like there’s a ton of activity going on. It highlights 6,798 authors and 9,785 articles, which is less than 2 articles per author. This shows me that people aren’t sticking around (and probably not earning much either).

Alexa graph unavailable.

9. Hubpages.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 230

Ad Revenue / Income: 60%

US Only: no

My Thoughts: Hubpages is one of the sites listed that is most similar to eHow, although it mixes in a little bit of Squidoo too. It has an amazing Alexa ranking and a great community of writers. A 60% ad revenue share is decent (better than the 50% average), but there are other sites that payout better. The page ranking of the site, however, might mean that your articles would get ranked higher (and faster) in the search engines, which could ultimately mean more income.

10. InfoBarrel.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 10,466

Ad Revenue / Income: 75%+

US Only: no

My Thoughts: Immediately, the ad sharing model sticks out to me at 75%, which looks to be the highest of the bunch. Although the Alexa ranking isn’t quite as high as the others, the rapid growth of this relatively new content site really catches my eye, and I imagine the ranking will climb even further still. I can definitely see InfoBarrel.com joining the ranks of some of the more popular content writing sites mentioned here, such as Hubpages and Associated Content. Lots of potential here as well.

11. Squidoo.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 242

Ad Revenue / Income: Multiple methods. Unsure of Adsense revenue split.

US Only: no

My Thoughts: I’ve published a number of “Squidoo Lenses” in the past myself (which is their fancy term for each particular site/article you create on Squidoo), and I have to say it’s a really interesting and fun process. You can add a number of different and cool “widget-style” features to your lens, including Amazon store, eBay, video, photo and other media Modules – which enhance each “article” or lens and make it more informative than a normal text-only article (and also gives you more opportunity for an affiliate commission. I know there are a lot of people making bank with Squidoo, but it’s a little tougher to understand exactly how to maximize revenue here, since it is so dynamic. I have yet to see any income from the few articles I’ve written, but I know I haven’t really tried to maximize the potential here.

12. Triond.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 17,197

Ad Revenue / Income: 50%

US Only: no

My Thoughts: This Israeli-based site is a little different than the rest, because as you generate content for it, they blast it out to their own content network, which includes niche websites related to your topic. Popular for non-US folk, this is the first time I heard of Triond before, and it seems promising. A 50% revenue share is pretty standard, so nothing too impressive there. Lastly, the home page lacks as far as getting your content seen, but again their syndication model is a bit different than the rest.

13. Xomba.com

Alexa Ranking Today: 2,287

Ad Revenue / Income: 50%

US Only: no

My Thoughts: In the game for a while (since 2006), Xomba is definitely a contender when it comes to which sites we should be writing for, however the ad revenue (as of today) is only 50%, which is again the average. The fairly steady Alexa ranking tells me the site is very healthy and getting decent traffic, however there was no growth in 2009 which is something to take notice of.

There are a lot of things to consider when choosing what platform to write on, but probably the most important thing to understand is user experience. So, if you have experience writing for any of these sites (or other content / how-to article sites that I failed to mention), I’m sure everyone here (including myself) would love to know what you think and if you’re happy.

Besides our blogs, where should I and everyone else be writing our content to maximize our passive income potential?

Big news in the eHow world.

If you haven’t heard about it already, eHow is making Demand Studios the exclusive platform for writing and contributing articles to eHow, and ending the Writer Compensation Program (WCP).

The WCP was established in 2007 as a way for anyone (living in the U.S.) to sign up and start contributing how-to articles, sharing the revenue generated from ad clicks on each article. I myself have been a part of the WCP since mid-2008, contributing 150 articles in one month and no articles since. However, every month for the last year I’ve earned upwards of $150-200 for doing basically nothing. This was the power of eHow and it’s WCP, and it’s why so many people flocked to become a part of the program.

Well now, things are changing. Starting April 13th, the WCP writing tools will be out of commission and you will have to sign up apply to become a writer for the Demand Studios platform. Here are the benefits of applying at Demand Studios, as outlined on the eHow blog:

A better publishing system for writers: writers can suggest their own titles (instead of going strictly with articles that begin with “How to…”

Writer empowerment to make more money: writers now have the option to choose to write articles that pay monthly on a residual basis (just like the WCP) or select articles that pay upfront.

Better quality articles: because all articles will now go through a review process and quality assurance.

Why I Think This is a Good Thing

I think the most important thing about this change is the quality of articles that will be published on the platform after the change has been made. If you’re at all familiar with eHow or have written for them lately, I’m sure you know that they’ve been getting a lot of heat for removing articles (without warning) because of poor quality, spam, or certain guidelines that have not been met. Many of the “rules” or guidelines were fairly gray, which is why I think so many articles were removed, and so many people complained.

I could be wrong, but I think change this is their response to that, especially considering the WCP was just recently opened up in the UK. Now, articles will not even be published until they meet editorial guidelines and are of the highest quality, which is good for anyone searching for information on the web, and good for writers because their articles won’t be deleted (or “swept”).

Less spam and clutter that was just there to try and make a buck.

Why I Think So Many People Are Upset

Many people are calling this a scam. It’s NOT a scam, but here’s why I think so many people are upset about the situation.

No one really likes change, especially a change like this that is fairly drastic, involves money and income, where the people involved don’t really have a say.

People react the same way when Apple decides to not approve certain iPhone applications, or remove a large number of apps for whatever reason, as they seem to be making and changing the rules as they go. Again, money and invested time is involved.

What was nice about the WCP is that it was simple. Sign up, write an article, publish it, and get paid a share of the ad revenue. Plus, you get to keep the rights to what you publish.

Now, things are a little more complicated. First instead of signing up, you have to be approved. This means that not everyone who wants to participate can. Secondly, in order to publish an article, you’ll go through an approval/editing process, which is somewhat unknown of exactly how that works at the moment. Lastly (if I follow what people are saying in the eHow community forums correctly), the rights for articles you write under the Demand Studios platform will no longer be yours.

Plus, like I mentioned before, this change comes somewhat suddenly and without warning. Even though many people see this change as being good, they’re still freaking out because it’s all happening so fast.

It makes you wonder…what’s next?

For Existing eHow Writers

For those of us who have articles published on the eHow platform, you’ve probably already seen a number of emails from eHow about what’s going on. What’s good to know is that our existing articles will still be online and generating an income per usual, and we still own the rights to those articles (I believe).

Sweet. I plan to continue to earn a revenue on my existing articles.

But again, after April 13th, you can no longer write new articles for eHow, and you must apply for Demand Studios if you want to continue to contribute to eHow.

What To Take Away From This

Personally, I see this change as a good thing for eHow itself because of the quality of articles that will be written. I also see it as a good thing for writers who do get accepted into Demand Studios because of the new and more professional opportunities that come with it. However, I’m a little put off about how the change was made (like other changes that were previous made on eHow) and how little time people have to even absorb it all. One would think that a company who has grown as a result of the people who participate (almost religiously) in it would understand more about how to bring about such a change and communicate with its users.

Maybe it’s not even possible to do it without rebel. Who knows…

For now, I’ll be looking more into Demand Studios, as well as other platforms such as Info Barrel and Xomba, to see what the passive income possibilities are.

The Overall Picture

There are a few things we can learn from this that go beyond the changes at eHow:

It always seem to happen this way: once you get comfortable with the way something is, it changes. That’s life. Be ready for it, welcome it, and take advantage of it if you can.

Don’t put all of your eggs into one basket. In other words, diversify. Things change daily, and what you could be relying on today may not be available for you tomorrow.

When things change like this, it’s okay to be angry and have an opinion. Just don’t DO anything as a result until you have all of the facts straight, and maybe after you’ve calmed down a bit.

I know there are a lot of eHow writers out there, so I’m curious…What You Think? Good Move? Bad Move? How do you feel about the changes and where this is all headed?

This blog post is just my opinion and based on my thin understanding of the facts that I’ve received from various sources, including the eHow blog and its community forum. Actions that you take from this point on regarding eHow or Demand Studios is up to you and you alone. Thanks!

This is why I’m proud to announce a new page dedicated just for my eHow.com readers – <a href="http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/ehow-income-reports-make-money/"title="eHow Reports Page" >The eHow Reports Page.

I’m not going to duplicate the content here in this post, so I encourage you to click on over and have a look at the new page. It focuses not only on my earnings, but also what I could have earned if I had continued to write like I had in the first month.

Now, I know I’ve been pretty big on showing off how I continue to make $150 a month from eHow.com from writing only 150 articles back in November of 2008 and since then never writing a single new article. Well, after writing the new eHow Reports page and seeing how much I could be making, I decided to start adding more articles to my arsenal. So far, I’ve written 8 new articles in August.c

Besides Maria’s Increase eHow Earnings Book, which I always recommend to get the most from your eHow.com earnings, I’m using a new tool, one that I’m sure not very many eHow.com users use. It’s called Market Samurai. Market Samurai is an advanced internet marketing tool that is used mainly by affiliate marketers and those who are trying to find profitable niches. It just so happens its perfect for me when trying to find an profitable article to write about for eHow.com.

It honestly has way too many features for me to list, but just imagine a keyword research tool, Google AdWords ke yword tracker, a page rank checker, a content finder and a backlink generator – all in one place. Plus, they just came out with a SWEET tool that’s perfect for earning an extra commission on those eHow.com articles.

What I can do is type in a keyword and it automatically finds related products that offer a commission for that particular keyword. These are products from Amazon.com, Clickbank, Commission Junction and PayDotCom. It’s crazy amazing and super fast, and I can easily earn a few extra dollars (potentially hundreds of extra dollars) from just a few clicks. For those of you who understand how eHow.com works, I’m sure you can see how powerful this one particular feature from Market Samurai can be. There’s a free trial you can download, but it’s definitely something I recommend. Check out the screenshot below for what it looks like (click to enlarge):

I started writing on eHow.com in November of 2008, a little over 7 months ago (wow, time flies). I went hardcore for the first month, writing a total of exactly 150 articles, and I just stopped. I planned on writing more as the months went by, but I had a lot of other projects going on, as you already know. So, I just let the articles sit.

I have continued to earn money via my 150 articles each month since November. I’ve even made an effort to include these earnings on my monthly reports, but they seem to get overlooked by the larger earnings from my eBook and Audio Guide. I’d like to highlight just my earnings from eHow from the last 7 months here for you (especially you eHow writers), just to show you what happened. I think it’s pretty interesting data.

Here’s the breakdown:

Total Earned: $879.66

Total Page Views: 130,394

Learned Findings From my eHow Experience

Here are a few things that I will conclude about these numbers. These are just my opinion, and you can choose to agree or disagree as you wish.

1. eHow is a Decent Method to Earn a Passive Income

Obviously, I’ve been earning an income from eHow for the last 6 months by doing absolutely nothing. I did not retouch any of my articles, or go back and add more, nor did I do anything to promote my articles. All I did was nothing (and let Google naturally take care of things for me).

Of course, $140-ish dollars a month isn’t enough to live off of, but if you put in enough work (i.e. write many more articles), you could hypothetically earn enough for something like a mortgage payment. How about an emergency fund?

2. Earnings Will Eventually Plateau

At first, I saw my earnings grow more and more each month, but for the last few months, it’s been up and down and averaging a pretty consistent amount. At first, the earnings will come slowly. Remember this if you’ve just started writing and are not seeing any substantial results yet.

As the search engines crawl through eHow and your eHow articles, if you’ve done the correct keyword research (with the help of Maria’s eBook, for example), your earnings will begin to grow until they’ve reached a point where they cannot earn that much more than they did the previous months. In other words, the amount you earn per article each month will generally plateau.

So, to increase your monthly earnings from eHow, you should simply write more articles.

3. You Can Trust eHow

I know a lot of websites that say they will pay you, but either they don’t pay or are very late with their payments (I think I heard this about Busika.com when it first came about). But with eHow, around the same time each month I receive an email stating my monthly earnings have been deposited into my Paypal account. They are very professional and very on time with everything. Even though I haven’t contributed to eHow for the past 6 months, they continue to pay me what I’ve earned.

Also, I poke my head into the eHow community forum every once and a while. I noticed that if there’s one little bug, or earnings are late to show in the daily reports, everyone goes nuts! “Where’s my earnings!”, “Help, what happened to my earnings report!”, “What the *&%$!”. Patience is very thin in the eHow community.

But, the eHow’s support team seems to be on top of their game and quick to respond to the ebb and flow of it’s users. It’s a sign they are serious about what they do, which means that you shouldn’t have to worry about eHow ever “folding” or losing your income stream from eHow anytime soon.

4. eHow Does Indeed Rank High in the Search Engines

As you may or may not know, I started this blog about a month or two before I started writing on eHow. Even so, I’ve had about 30,000 more views on my eHow articles than on this blog, which is definitely a significant amount of views. It’s kind of crazy to think about because I spend a lot of time and effort promoting this blog, and nothing to really promote my eHow articles.

This shows me that if you were to compare starting a blog to starting to write for eHow, you will more quickly rank higher in the search engines and have more page views on eHow. I believe the blog will eventually catch up, and it sort of depends on what you’re writing about, but if you were to write about the same subject, eHow would win in those categories, at first. Again, at first.

Starting a blog, however, gives us more earnings potential, and of course more freedom to do what you want.

5. It is Possible to Earn Money on eHow!

This kind of goes back to #1, but I want to reiterate that to me, eHow is a winner. I wouldn’t say it’s like winning the lotto, but for all of you haters and doubtful people, including those of you who are writing on eHow and not making anything – it really does work, you just have to put in the time and effort up front.

Quick Tips:

Create a goal for how many articles you’d like to write next month. 150 was a lot, but it was doable. Divide by 30 and make sure you write that many each day.

Don’t just write about anything. At first, I thought it was smarter to write about whatever came to mind without thinking about how many people would find it useful or search for it in a search engine, because I could write more articles. Keyword research is the key to your success, and you will earn more money by writing 10 keyword rich, well-researched articles than 200 articles that were not thought about beforehand.

Lastly, in regards to the bold statement above, if you’re serious about earning $100 or more dollars a month like I do, I’d invest a small amount of money to pick up Maria’s eHow eBook or Janet’s eHow eBook and read every page and copy their process. You will earn your money back within the first month or two.

This is the last guest post in queue before I start writing again. I’m happy to say that this is a guest post from Maria, founder of the Residual Income Web Blog. She is also the author of the infamous eHow eBook which I personally used to drastically increase my ehow earnings, and she has a lot more projects underway as well. Here is a wonderful article from Maria about increasing your residual income with content sites.

I began my passive income adventure by writing content articles for a large website that had recently started a user-driven content section. When I started writing these short SEO (search engine optimized) articles, I had no idea what – if anything – they would earn. I certainly didn’t image they would be the start of something big and even lead to a paradigm shift in my freelance writing career.

For many established online writers and Internet marketers, writing content for other sites is something that simply doesn’t occur to them; and for new online writers starting out, going for a sure thing – selling content for a flat rate – is more attractive than the unknowns of writing for residuals.

However, it is my experience that revenue-sharing content sites can be a significant income generator for virtually all online writers and marketers, whether newbies and seasoned professionals. In most cases, the income is truly passive once the articles are written – the page rank and internal linking system on the sites is often all that’s needed to get content indexed by search engines and found by those searching for the information you’ve shared.

Content sites are a great way to explore many different niches at ones, without having to set up a hundred mini niche sites or dilute the topics of your current sites and blogs. I use content sites to get a feel for what I enjoy writing about and what is most profitable for me. This information has been invaluable in starting my own content sites.

They can also be quite lucrative, as I have discovered. Over a dozen individual articles I wrote on eHow have earned over $100 each … a number I have trouble matching on my own sites thus far. For content writers selling their articles for $10 or even $20 or more, experiment with revenue-sharing sites to see if you can earn a better rate writing for yourself.

Choosing Content Sites

Potential earnings are often the main criteria for writers when considering a content site. If earnings potential is not available, for example if the site is new or current writers aren’t broadcasting their earnings, look at the pay structure if published. For example, some sites pay a portion of Adsense or per 1,000 views. There are other factors that should not be overlooked. One of the main things to consider is whether writers retain rights to their content. If so, you can always remove and republish your work if earnings aren’t what you expected. In addition to earnings, look for the site’s Alexa ranking, traffic statistics, age, popularity and number of active users. Spend some time on the site and check out the article input tool. I find the best thing to do is write a few articles on any decent revenue-sharing or user-driven content site you come across and write more – or not – based on your own experiences.

Writing Content Site Articles

Read through each site’s terms of use or user agreement. Some allow only original content, some allow duplicate material as long as you are the author. Some sites are okay with inconspicuous, related affiliate links; others ban them and repeat violators.

Learn basic search engine optimization and do basic keyword research for each article you write. Your main traffic is via search engines, on site and off, and your articles have to be written with this in mind.

Maintain high quality standards. No only is your reputation at stake; your earnings are too. Well written articles perform better overall.

Keep most article between 300 and 700 words. Length is lethal online, but too-short articles may be ignored by the search engines.

Hidden Benefits of Content Sites

With a profile and library of articles on several content sites, you will find that in addition to article earnings, you can:

Gain backlinks to your own sites and blogs through your profile and articles (if the site allows do-follow links).

Drive traffic to your niche sites, information product or affiliate sales pages.

Increase affiliate earnings.

Build an online presence, gain brand/ name recognition.

Do you write for online content sites? Do you do it primarily for the earnings, or traffic and backlinks?

If you write for eHow, then you know how easy it can be to publish an article and begin earning passive income. I joined eHow back in November 2008 after hearing about it from Pat and have since published just about 100 articles. My earnings are steadily increasing each month, which is fantastic, thanks in part to great advice I read right here at the Smart Passive Income Blog.

But one thing I’ve noticed is that there’s quite a lot more to keep track of as I continue to add new articles to my collection. As an organizing junkie, I couldn’t help but see a need for a little organization regarding my approach to writing for eHow.

Why should I bother spending precious time to organize my approach to eHow when I could just be spending that time writing more articles? Well, I believe that if I get a few aspects of my eHow workflow organized, I can actually increase my potential for earning more income. Spend a little time up front and reap the benefits later on. Hey, that sounds familiar…

I’ve been operating my new and improved eHow workflow for some time now and I love it. Today I’d like to share six ways you can begin to organize your own eHow workflow and hopefully maximize your potential for earning passive income!

1. Organize Your Goals

Before undertaking any task, small or large, it is always good to set clear goals. People have discussed eHow goals a little here in the past so I’m not going to go too much more into detail except to say that the more defined your goals are, the better chance you have for reaching those goals. Write them down. Be realistic. Be specific. Be diligent. And be organized.

How I’m organizing my goals: At the beginning of 2009, I made the resolution to write at least one article a day, leaving me with 365 articles at the end of the year. I decided up front that I would not make myself actually write ONE ARTICLE EACH DAY, because frankly that is not always practical. I just make sure that I am caught up to date and I write several articles at a time in chunks. I currently am at 60 articles for 2009 and at the time of writing this post, it was February 23. 31+23=54, so I’m a little ahead of schedule.

2. Organize Your Ideas

As soon as I read Pat’s suggestion to keep a notebook to keep track of article ideas, I knew I had to do it. You can’t possibly remember every idea that might pop into your head throughout the day so it is best to just write it all down. But that’s only part of what you could be doing with your notebook. To further organize those ideas, you could divide them up into subject categories or even into categories of subjects you are very knowledgeable about versus subjects you might have to do a little more research about.

How I’m organizing my ideas: As I said above, I keep a special eHow notebook. In my notebook I have three sections: (1) “anything goes” article ideas, (2) special keywords I’ve actually already researched, and (3) rough article outlines.

3. Organize Your Tools

If you’ve spent any time at all learning about how to maximize your eHow earnings, then you ultimately understand the importance of SEO and keywords. I’m still getting the hang of it all, but I’ve seen a huge difference already in earnings of articles I’ve carefully researched and chosen keywords for, and articles where I just wrote anything. Fortunately there are a lot of tools out there for finding good keywords. However, all these tools can also be a little overwhelming when you are trying to decide which ones to actually use. Enter organization. Understanding all the tools available to you and getting them organized will help clear up some of the confusion and also aid in making your keyword researching workflow go much more smoothly.

How I’m organizing my tools: I have 3 main tools that I use to research keywords: Google Adwords Keyword Tool, Worktracker Keywords, and Google’s auto complete function in their search engine. I also recently have been toying with Anthony Delgado’s free Increased Web Site Traffic Keyword Ranking Tool. How do I organize all these tools? I simply keep them bookmarked in a folder I label eHow SEO. When it comes time to do some keyword research, I open the entire folder in tabs so I am ready to go.

4. Organize Your Time

Even though I’ve only been on eHow for a few short months, I’ve quickly realized that it is very easy to spend time doing other eHow-related tasks besides writings articles. For example, an active eHow member can spend a lot of time reading and posting to the helpful eHow forums. Members also can devote a significant amount of time to reading, commenting on, and rating other member’s articles. Keyword research, article composition, and article promotion are all very important components to writing articles that earn, but each component also takes time. The point is, since there are so many things you could be doing on eHow, you have to not only prioritize your time, but also schedule your time.

How I’m organizing my time: Each week I set aside usually one day that I devote to eHow. I like to write several articles in one sitting because the streamlined process is more efficient. I decide exactly how many articles I will write and then at the end I take some time to RCR other member’s articles after I’ve published my own. I visit the forums usually every day just to keep up to date with the latest news, but I try to only spend a couple of minutes there. Overall, anything I do on eHow I try to schedule first so that I know I am using my time wisely.

5. Organize Your Articles

eHow operates with a system where the writers retain copyright for all their articles. So if you retain copyright, then you should make sure you’ve got all your articles organized and stored offline in addition to online. You never know when eHow may randomly pull one of your articles or if eHow will just one day up and disappear (hopefully not!). These are your articles and you should make sure you’ve got them stored properly. Furthermore, organizing your articles offline by date, or even by subject, will really help you in the long run when you need to access or edit an article.

How I’m organizing my articles: I keep a single folder on my hard drive where I save all my eHow articles. The article files are Word Documents and are labeled with a system that keeps the articles in order from oldest to newest (for example, “2009-02-22 How to build a house.doc”). I also keep one special file that serves as my article template. I include all the regular eHow headings and completely write the articles offline first. I’ve heard too many horror stories of people who are writing an article using the publish tool, something goes wrong, and all their data is lost. That and the fact that these articles belong to me are reason enough to keep them stored and organized offline.

6. Organize Your Earnings

eHow provides earnings data for its writers in a number of ways, but these ways are not always ideal. In order to really keep track of your earnings, it is good to keep a database elsewhere where you can perform beneficial analyses and keep better track of trends. The better understanding you have of earning trends for your individual articles, the better you will be able to earn more in the future by writings articles that have more earning potential.

How I’m organizing my earnings: If I were a programmer, I would have a totally cool database of article earnings to analyze and create graphs for. But I’m not. However that doesn’t mean I can’t organize my earnings data at all. Currently I track my earning trends in the form of an excel spreadsheet. I record anything I can (i.e. anything eHow tells us) so I’m able to keep track of changes, trends, and the big picture.

I started writing for eHow shortly after I started reading Smart Passive Income. I’ve just dabbled in it so far but the last two months have convinced me that eHow is a great way to make passive income and that I need to devote more time to writing eHow articles.

I’ve written a total of five articles for eHow. My eHow earnings have been $0.31 for November 2008, $3.08 for December 2008, and $2.47 for January 2009. Those results are not too impressive and you’re probably wondering why I am convinced that eHow could be a great way for me to make passive income.

The reason I’m happy with my eHow results is because I also made $50 dollars from a referral link. I wrote an eHow article titled “How to Receive the Wachovia Bank $25 Referral Bonus” and two people have signed up for the bonus through my referral link. This is a win-win because they receive a $25 bonus and I receive a $25 bonus.

It seems obvious to me now that including referral or affilliate links in your eHow articles, where appropriate, is a good way to increase your earnings but it wasn’t really something I thought about when writing my articles. I still have a lot to learn about eHow and it is encouraging to see that even while I’m learning and improving I’m already receiving a decent return on my time invested.

Great advice. I’m also very interested in Andy’s article about Living on $10k a Year!

In addition to my <a href="http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/my-monthly-report-january-2009/"title="My Monthly Report - January 2009" target="_blank">monthly reports, I usually write a post each month specifically about my earnings writing for eHow.com. When this blog first started, a majority of its readers were from eHow, which is why I spent a lot of time writing about it as a passive income source in the past. (A tip from Pat: if you write a blog, know who your audience is, and write for them, not just for you).

Anyways, now that I’ve accumulated a significant influx of readers from personal finance blogs and the like, I’d like to take a brief moment and introduce eHow to anyone who is unfamiliar with it – and how it can produce passive income.

eHow At A Glance

eHow.com is a website where you can learn “how to do just about everything”. If you have a chance, feel free to enter something in the search form and I’m pretty sure you’ll find an article about how to do it. The cool thing about this is that each of the articles are written by people like us. It’s basically like a huge open source how-to manual that anyone can add their own content to.

Whenever anyone writes an article, it gets posted along with ads that are mainly from Google (adsense). Whenever anyone clicks on an ad on an article, eHow earns money, and the author of the article gets a little piece of it (for now, only U.S. citizens can earn money from their articles).

The power of this is that if you write an article, it’s forever on the net and awaiting those readers who will click on the ads and earn you money. It’s kind of like a blog post that has ads on it. So, you may be thinking, why not just start a blog and keep all of the cash yourself without giving any piece of the earnings away?

Well – eHow articles rank really high in the Google Search engines. If you were start a blog today and write an article about doggy diapers, it would take a few months for the search engines to find it and your blog would have to have good keywords and metadata, as well as good outgoing links and backlinks etc, just to be ranked near the top. If you wrote the same article and posted it on eHow, your chances of having it show up at the top of the search engine results page (SERP) sooner is almost guaranteed. I once wrote an article on eHow and I found it on Google as the top result with a few keywords within 3 days.

Another perk is that you can write about anything and everything. In a blog, you really want to narrow your focus and find a niche if you want it to succeed. With eHow, you can write about many different topics, although I’d recommend studying which of your articles earn the most money and then focus on writing more about similar subjects.

The Big Picture

I once wrote a blog post about how it’s possible to make over 40k a year writing articles on eHow. I said that if I wrote 5 articles a day for an entire year, this would possibly happen, and I had the <a href="http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/the-math-behind-my-ehow-experiment/"title="The Math Behind My eHow Experiment - 40k a year?" target="_blank">math to prove it. A few people I know earn well over $1000 a month, and the cool part is that they earn money on articles they’ve already written! I mean, they could stop writing new articles today and continue to earn $1000 a month for doing nothing. That’s passive income for sure. Again, it’s about putting in the initial hard work (writing articles, creating a product, etc.) and then reaping the benefits later after it’s on auto-pilot.

Before I get into this month’s earning, here are a few more articles about eHow that I’ve written that may be of interest to you:

<a href="http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/my-second-month-of-ehow-unwrapped/"title="My Second Month of eHow Unwrapped" target="_blank">My Second Month of eHow Unwrapped

My Third Month of eHow Unwrapped

During the month of January, I wrote zero articles. Yes, for the second month in a row, I wrote no new articles on eHow. I did this, one, because I was focused on the launch of my audio guide for intheleed.com (not to mention my wedding), but also because I was curious to see what would happen to my earnings. Would they go down, would they go up, or would they remain the same?

If you recall, in my first month I had written about 150 articles and totaled $20.02.

In my second month, I wrote zero new articles and totaled $96.87. That’s a 484% increase in earnings – for doing nothing. This got me juiced, and I was hoping for another 484% increase, which would make my January earnings about $468 dollars. Hey – I can dream right?

In January, I earned $101.08. It’s not $468, which I knew wouldn’t happen, but I’m relieved and happy to say that my earnings have stayed just about the same. This leads me to believe a few things:

Earnings for a number of articles reach a plateau after a certain amount of time (basically when the search engines finally pick up on them and stabilize their rankings. This is why I had such low earnings the first month). Of course, the occasionally digg or social bookmarking of some of your articles may boost your earnings, but generally you’ll earn the same amount each month if you don’t increase the number of articles you have.

I can control how much I earn. If I write more articles, I will earn more money. I think many eHow writers know this and can see it for themselves in their earnings reports, which often leads to “eHow addiction”.

Lastly, it’s really important to write good articles and make sure they are optimized to earn the most money. This can be done by doing proper keyword research and writing articles in such a way that the search engines pick up on them faster. All of this is explained in these two eBooks about how to increase your income on eHow:

Maria’s “Increase eHow Earnings”

Janet Ford’s “How to eHow”

I’m not going to post any graphs or charts about my earnings this month, because I think I’ve told you the whole story already.

If you write for eHow, just use my two months off as motivation for you to keep writing, knowing that in a sense, like I explained, you do have control of how much you earn.

If you don’t write for eHow yet but are interested, getting started is very easy and just takes a few minutes. Also, if you ever have questions about anything, feel free to ask me or post your question on the eHow community forum after you sign up. The community there is awesome and very friendly. Sign up and introduce yourself!

In my second month of writing articles on eHow, I decided to let my articles marinate on the web without writing any more. I did this half because I was super busy, but also because I wanted to see how much more money, if any, I would make by just letting my articles sit. I’m actually very pleased with my results.

In my <a href="http://www.smartpassiveincome.com/my-first-month-of-ehow-unwrapped/"title="My First Month of eHow Unwrapped" target="_blank">first month of writing on eHow, you may remember that I made $20.02 after reaching my goal of about 150 articles, or 5 articles a day. I’ll estimate that I averaged a generous 2 hours a day writing, or 60 hours in total. In order to see this in a way we can all relate to, that’s about $0.33 cents per hour of work. On paper, that’s chump change. But, as Yoda would say, “After some time, see results, you will. Herh herh herh.” (I used Yodaspeak.co.uk for this, lol!)

The Results

In my second month, my 150 or so articles earned me a total of $96.87. This, for zero hours of work. (Note: I did write 6 extra articles in December, because I found some keywords that I had to take advantage of…for the purpose of this report, I have excluded those articles in my results.)

So, zero hours of work in December earned me $96.87. That’s pretty darn good passive income right there. That’s a total of $116.89 in 60 hours of work, or $1.95 an hour. Still, that’s much less than minimum wage. But, remember what Yoda says. Let’s actually do a hypothetical calculation of the future. For this calculation, let’s assume I do not write any more articles, and I only earn $96.87 per month from now on. This, of course, assumes my rate of earnings does not grow at all, which is probably not true – but for ease of calculation, let’s just assume my rate of earnings stay the same at $96.87 per month after the first month, for 6 months:

$8.41 an hour – now we’re talking. But the most impressive thing is – notice how many hours of work was put in between December and April – absolutely none! After a year, I’d have over $1000 and $18/hour. Again, this is what earning a passive income is all about: doing the work now, and reaping the benefits later.

This only means one thing – I’d be dumb just to let the articles sit and do nothing. After my wedding planning and moving into a new apartment – I’m definitely going to crank out some more articles. I would love to earn a total of $4000.00 in 2009. This seems doable, as long as I’m persistent and stick to a schedule, which I’ll figure out later. How many articles are you going to write in 2009…or I should say, first – how many articles are you going to write in January of 2009?

The Growth of the Rate of Earnings

Here is a chart of my earnings per day (in blue) and my average earnings per day over time (in red):

You can see how each day, the earnings may vary, but over time – they will go up. After 2 months, I now average $2.02 a day in earnings. Remember, in December – I did not write any more articles, so I attribute all of my earnings in December to my patience while waiting for Google to pick up more of my articles in their search engine.

Gosh, I wish there was a way to track where all of the viewers came from. It would be really easy to implement, and it would make our lives on eHow much more interesting. Just imagine finding that a website has linked to one of your articles – then you can thank the author for posting the link. Or, a pie chart (google analytics-esque) showing where all of the readers come from, or even better, where all of the people came from who clicked on the ads on your articles. Find that out, milk it, and you’re gold. As much as I love eHow and the opportunity is presents to people, there is still a lot they can improve on. Anyways, I digress. I may write a post in January with suggestions and improvements – we’ll see.

The point here is, as I’ve said before, if you write articles on eHow, and maximize your chance to be ranked on Google through smart keyword research and smart content writing, your earnings will grow over time – even if you don’t write any more. Obviously, the more articles you write, the more chances you have to earn more money.

My Top Articles

If you remember in my last eHow report, my top earning article was How to Be Financially and Location Independent, which I published on November 27th, earning me $1.72. It was pretty cool because it was one of the last articles I wrote right before my 150 article experiment ended. I figured I hit a “golden article”. Today, that article has earned me a total of $3.43 – not the rate of growth I was expecting.

I noticed that my Google ranking for a keyword: “location independent”, had dropped. It is now on the second page, when in the first few days, it was actually ranked 4th or 5th on the first page. This is why I think my earnings weren’t quite as impressive for this particular article. Just another confirmation of how important keywords and Google Rankings are.

Here is a list of my Top Earning Articles since I began:

About My Top Articles

All of my top money earning articles, about 21 out of my top 25, were all written after 11/16/08, which is when I purchased and read Maria’s (aka. TheWriterGig) eBook about how to improve earnings. It makes me sad that I didn’t purchase this eBook earlier, because I could have definitely used the information inside to make my numbers look even better. I pretty much wasted the first half of November…let’s take a look:

Articles written before 11/16/08: $19.71 total, 19,288 views

Articles written on 11/16/08 and later: $100.68 total, 16,390 views

Very, very interesting, and again it’s obvious that keyword research and content writing is key. I know I’ve said that a few times now, and I hope it’s annoying you, because if you’re not doing the research, you’re wasting your time (if your goal is to earn as much money as possible). I just want to thank Maria again for her book and very sound advice.

My later articles were exclusively about topics that I found doing keyword research. My earlier articles were exclusively about topics that I thought would be good, or just things I had in mind – without research. Writing about keyword terms is a little harder, and a little less interesting, because it’s not necessarily something that inspires me, but knowing that it may earn me money in the future is enough to get me through writing them.

Why I Keep Track of all this Stuff

Well, for one – it interests me (I LOVE math), but really, it’s all for you. I hope you can learn from my experiences and earning reports, so that you can begin to produce a passive income stream online using techniques such as writing articles on eHow.

Not only that, but I am learning a lot as I go along too, and I’m hoping to pass along reports of what I’ve learned and the mistakes I’ve made to you – so YOU can improve your earnings and ultimately, your lifestyle.

Keeping track of all these numbers and earnings is not easy. Again, I wish eHow made it easier for me – but each day I wake up and see how much I’ve earned and plug that information into an excel file. I manually find the articles and information that seem interesting, in hopes that you and I both learn and increase our earnings. I just want to say thanks for your comments and encouragement, for if it wasn’t for you, I wouldn’t have the energy to do these reports, that I hope help you out.

To Sum It All Up

In conclusion, I would recommend that you keep writing as much as possible, making sure you do the necessary keyword research and content writing techniques to improve your articles’ Google rankings and click-throughs.

I would create a schedule or goal of how many articles you want to write each week, and stick with it. Even if it’s just 1 article a week – you gotta do it, because time is on your side, as long as you take advantage of it.

Also, if you have been writing and you haven’t seen much in terms of earnings, it could mean…

You didn’t do adequate keyword research – meaning you’re writing about an article that not many people are searching for.

You’re writing in a niche that does not produce many ad clicks. As most of us know, recipes aren’t that good, but you’ll have to look at your own articles and stay away from the topics that don’t do well for you and your writing style, and milk the ones that do well for you.

You did the keyword research, but someone else has beat you to the punch. Writing about something someone else wrote about already will decrease your chances of earning money, obviously. But, you can improve your earnings, if you want to write about that particular topic, by making sure the title of your article is unique, and the content of your article is better.

You need to give yourself more time. Be patient, trust your research, and you’ll do great!

I hope this post was informative. Good luck to you, and I wish you the best!

P.S. – Useful eHow Books to Increase your Earnings

If you haven’t read one of the following eBooks, you may want to if you want to increase your earnings. I’ve only read Maria’s, but I’ve heard that Janet’s is just as good. Good luck!

This will be the biggest assessment and study of anyone’s first month on eHow – EVER. Okay, maybe not, but I am going to give you lots of information. Note that all of the charts, graphs, numbers and earnings are from my own personal experience with eHow, and everything I tell you will be my own recommendation and opinion. I cannot guarantee that if you follow the same path you will do the same, but hey, maybe you’ll do even better! I hope so, and I’ll try to help.

As you may recall, I planned to write an average of 5 articles a day on eHow. Currently, I have 130 written, and because I started writing on November 4th, I consider myself right on track to meet my goal of 150 by December 4th. I decided to write this blog post a few days early to keep track of everything each month, instead of each month + 4 days. Therefore, all of the following is based on 130 articles over a period of 28 days.

eHow Earnings over Time

For you eHow newbs, you can earn money by writing “how-to” articles on eHow.com. You get a cut of the earnings generated every time a reader clicks on one of the advertisements on your articles. Below is a graph showing my earnings for my first month (November 2008), based on a 5 article per day average:

In 28 days I’ve made $20.02, and I’m not complaining. As you can see, the graph is generally exponential, which means earnings are accelerating and growing over time. Based on my and other people’s records, a constant growth of income seems to be the basic trend with eHow earnings, so don’t be discouraged if things seem slow at first. I even had a few early days of no earnings at all. Keep writing and be patient.

Something cool to think about is what would happen if I just stopped writing articles today. I doubt that I would ever earn less than $20 per month from this point on. An extra $20 is like: your child’s allowance, a tank of gas, Starbucks for a week, a gift card for a friend, or that New York Time’s Bestseller you’ve been wanting to get. Again, it’s about putting in the hard work now, and reaping the benefits later – that’s what making a passive income online is all about.

Article Particulars

Here are my top 5 money earning articles of the month along with the amount earned, date written and number of views:

Interesting to say the least. My most profitable article is the one that was written more recently than the others, and I see no real correlation between the number of views and the earnings. In addition, I think it’s important to tell you that none of my articles from my first week were in my top 20 money earning articles.

There is one thing that all of the articles above have in common that would have helped me get off the ground a little faster. What is it? I’ll tell you, don’t worry.

Moving on, I thought it would be interesting to show you my top 5 most viewed articles of the month, with the same data as above.

Obviously, having more page views does not mean more earnings. Also, you may find yourself writing on a topic (e.g. my relationship articles), that get a lot of views – but little income. Little or no income means: 1) no one is clicking on the ads, and/or 2) the ad competition is little to none, and the earnings per click is lower as a result. When I think about it even further, what kind of ads would people want to click on about the articles listed above. Let’s look at the ads for my top viewed article: How to do the small things that make her smile, laugh, etc…

So, if you’re a dude and you’re reading an article about how to make your woman laugh and smile, are you going to click on any of these ads? Well, the top 2 ads are about men, so those are out. Maybe if you were an alcoholic, but what does that have to do with making your girl laugh or smile. And the last ad? I’d feel bad if you were reading an article about the “small things” and clicked on that one. Bottom line, these ads suck for my article, and it’s because of a poor title, poor keywords, poor writing, and mainly a poor topic choice. I’m surprised I even got $0.43 cents out of it.

Based on my 1 month’s experience on eHow, I will stay away from the following topics. If you have had success writing about any of these, please do continue writing about them – they are just not for me and my quest to maximize earning potential:

Relationships

Recipes

Writing on eHow

Things that are free

Specific sports

Little Daily Activities

The “Golden Article”

I’ve heard stories about “golden articles”. These are articles that some people write that seem to just be way ahead of the rest, sometimes spiking over $100.00 in one day! This can be due to some promotion on a social bookmark website or another high ranking webpage. I have yet to find a “golden article” in my arsenal, but I think it’s still a little early for anything like that to happen just yet.

The Trick to Earning More on eHow

After an entire month and looking back at my list of articles and the views and earnings for each, I can literally pick a specific point in time when I finally started to see results. It’s November 19th, and that is when I started to get really serious about choosing topics and keyword research.

Let me give you a few more numbers:

Before November 19th

Articles written: 78

Earned income: $7.69

income per article avg: 10 cents

After November 19th

Articles written: 52

Earned income: $12.33

income per article avg: 24 cents

I increased my income by an amazing 240%, and this is all within the first month! I made more money with less articles, which means less time wasted. This was because I was smarter about what I wrote about, smarter about keyword research, and smarter about how I wrote each article. If you look at my top earning articles, the one thing they all have in common is that they are all written after November 19th.

So what exactly did I do on November 19th? I read Maria’s (aka WriterGig’s) eBook about increasing eHow earnings. She makes over $1000 a month with her eHow articles, and so I just had to give it a read to find out if her methods work. As you can see by my results, they absolutely do.

If you want more proof, type in the keyword “location independent” in your google search engine. My top earning article is 4th on the list, and i just wrote this article a few days ago. (article placement in google search engine may change over time)

It took about 15 minutes to read Maria’s eBook, and everything is really easy to understand. I think that if you want to write and succeed with eHow, you should definitely purchase Maria’s eBook and learn what she has to preach.

I’d tell you all about it myself, but Maria’s book has really helped me out, so the least I can do for her is help promote her eBook. Click the button below to Get Maria’s eBook:

Your Thoughts?

I need to know if any of this stuff is interesting to you. If it’s not, I won’t worry about keeping track of statistics and making graphs and such for eHow. If it is, I’ll continue my work and try to help you increase your earnings if you are writing for eHow. Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think.

If you write for eHow already, and want to help me out, tell one of your friends about this blog post.

Thanks everyone – Happy Wednesday!
