How I Built My Business With No Money to SpendThis is a guest post by Paul Cunningham of BloggingTeacher.com.

In 2008 I was standing at a cross roads in my journey as an online entrepreneur. My wife and I had one child already and a second one on the way. We were also getting ready to sell our apartment and move into the new family home that we were building.

To say money was tight would be an understatement. We were literally counting our money to the last dollar and starting to make a list of people we could stay with if the new house wasn’t ready in time.

Meanwhile, I was working on my blogs outside of my day job hours and trying to build them into a viable online business. I knew I needed to do it without spending a single dollar of our savings, but my blogs weren’t making any money yet. Click to continue…

In this session of the Smart Passive Income Podcast, I welcome Corbett Barr from ThinkTraffic.net as a co-host, and we discuss something I know most of you are very interested in…traffic!

We talk mostly about traffic for bloggers, although many of the same principles and techniques can apply to any other type of website you may have.

Here are just some of the questions we answer on today’s session:

  • What can you expect traffic-wise when you’re just starting out?
  • What things can you do to get your name out there and start to get traffic coming to your site?
  • How do you create buzz for a relatively new blog or website?
  • How many posts should you write before you start up a new blog?
  • What do you do with the great content that you’ve written for your new site that probably not very many people will read, since there’s hardly any traffic coming in at first?
  • Is blog commenting and participating in forum discussions a good way to drive traffic to your site?
  • As a blog starts to pick up momentum, in many cases the traffic will eventually begin to plateau. What can you do to break through to the next level and get off of that plateau?

So far, this has been one of my favorite podcast sessions to record, so I’m hoping it will be one of your favorites to listen to.

Enjoy!

Question MarksI was always taught to include some kind of freebie when building an email list. Whether it’s an eBook, a course, a report or something else, a freebie will capture people’s attention and grab new subscribers.

I mean, who doesn’t love something for free, right?

Well, at Blog World Expo last week, an interesting discussion came up during Thursday’s lunch banquet. It started when Maren Kate from Escapingthe9to5.com shared that when she took out her freebie, more people ended up subscribing to her list.

Why do you think this happened? Click to continue…

My time in Vegas for Blog World Expo is already over! I guess time flies when you’re having fun.

The family and I drove in on Tuesday, and we’re headed back today. Although BWE runs through the entire weekend, I don’t think my family could last that long in Vegas. This was our first “long” trip since we had our son 9 months ago, and he did awesome! I’m so proud of him!

Next year, I’ll definitely stay the entire time. In just two short days, I’ve met a ton of awesome people – finally shaking hands with people I’ve been online friends with for a very long time, and meeting people who I’ve never heard of before who are doing amazing things on their blogs.

Here are just some of the wonderful people I met in person and actually hung out with:

I’m sure I missed a few people (sorry if I did! most of the above handed me business cards), but honestly it was such a humbling experience to meet everyone that I did.

It was especially cool to hang out with Leo Babauta from ZenHabits.net, who I’ve always looked up to and admired for what he does and what he has accomplished. We must have chatted for several hours at one point – some of it business related (which I must say was VERY helpful) and some of it totally random, but definitely fun. If you ever wondered if he was as nice and as wise a person as he seems on his blog…he is. No question about it.

As far as the event and the speakers, I sat in on a few presentations and they were great, however I felt like the presentations were more for the new blogger – at least today’s presentations. Not everyone watches the presentations though, and many people stand in the hallways outside of the conference rooms just to network. I actually found that my time spent networking and building relationships with other people was more valuable than the information I actually learned in the presentations I sat in.

I think the biggest thing I learned this week was something that I picked up just from hanging around some of the most successful bloggers here: they all have the drive to help others accomplish something. Whether it’s helping someone make money online, take fantastic photos, commence a raw food diet, help kids stay active – whatever it is, their primary goal is to help others, and because they do that so well, they have become successful entrepreneurs.

I’m quite tired, so I’m going to leave it at that until Monday, but here are a few pictures from the event:

Thanks for following me on my journey to my first Blog World Expo! Maybe I can land a speaking gig next year? We’ll see. Either way, I’ll be there, and hopefully see you there too.

Cheers!

p.s. For those of you who signed up for the webinar on Sunday October 17th with me and Joost about the SEO of the SPI blog, Joost had to reschedule. Do you think I should cancel the existing webinar time slot, or keep the webinar open and we can chat about something else? Let me know what you think.

p.p.s. Someone commented on the last post asking how traveling to Vegas and handing out business cards and networking can count as “passive”. Well, for those of you new to this blog, The Smart Passive Income Blog and what I do around it is totally NOT passive. A blog is not passive because it takes a lot of upkeep to keep it going, and going to Vegas and networking is NOT passive as well for obvious reasons. But like a blog, going to events like this and networking can be used as a platform or a launching pad for something that can become a passive income stream. This blog is where I talk about the passive income streams that I have already created or are in the process of creating. I hope this clears things up a bit. Good question though, thanks for asking!

In this session of the Smart Passive Income Podcast, I interview Michael Dunlop of IncomeDiary.com, who is a 20-year old entrepreneur who seems to know exactly what he’s doing. He’s making well over 6-figures online from blogging working half-time hours, and he’s recently found success with a brand new premium WordPress plugin that he just launched, Pop Up Domination. I chat with him quite a bit about that process because I’m also interested in software development as a potential income source in the future. This interview definitely makes me want to get it done ASAP.

Enjoy!

StrategySo we’re about 1 month into our niche site duel (since I was challenged), and things are starting to move.

I’ve posted the latest updates from the other participants on the niche site duel hub, so I definitely recommend checking that out because there have been a lot of recent updates and a lot of excellent content to take in.

Because I’m targeting a relatively more competitive niche than my other niche sites (and my niche duel competitors), it will take me a little longer to reach the first page. Plus, I’m doing most of the work myself, and I don’t have a team of VAs working for me like the other guys. That said, I’m quite happy with the results so far, and am confident that I will eventually get there. Here’s the latest on my rankings: Click to continue…

HeadlinesThis is a guest post by James Tayo of Entrepreneur Blog’r.

One day I was shopping for groceries and as I walked through the magazine section, I was stopped in my tracks. A title on one of the magazines had caught my eye and it read “One Wedding secret Prince Charles must take to his grave”. I just had to stop to pick it up to find out what they were on about. If you live in the UK, you always are interested in some crazy thing the royal family does. This moment reminded me of how powerful a great headline can be.

The Power of a Headline.

In a previous post, Pat explained why an incomplete headline will help you get more traffic to your blog and this post is a follow up to expand on that idea. In the age of social media and millions of other blogs competing for your audiences attention, it has become a noisy world out there. Today it is not who shouts the loudest that gets the most attention but who shouts the smartest. Especially if you are a new blogger, you could write all the great content you want, but to get that content read, you need to have a great headline that pulls people in from the RSS readers, Twitter or wherever you may be promoting it.

How to Learn to Write Great Headlines

Writing great headlines is not hard at all, you just need to know what works, the psychology behind why it works and put that into practice. Click to continue…

Are YouTube and Podcasting Worth It?Last year, I made a conscious decision to turn my growing Smart Passive Income blog into the Smart Passive Income brand.

I knew nothing about “branding” at the time, except that I knew that successful brands utilized all different mediums to reach their audience. Stick to one medium, and you’ll limit your reach to only those who use that medium.

That’s why you see major brands on television and on the radio (and everywhere else it seems), or why you see many of the top bloggers syndicate and expand their written content with videos and podcasts too.

I wanted to do the same, and that’s why I have my YouTube Channel, and most recently, my Podcast.

So is it worth all the effort? Click to continue…

how to setup a niche siteThere are hundreds of different ways to setup a niche website – you know this, but I’ll outline my process for you below because it’s easy to follow and it doesn’t require much know-how. If you have anything to add, I’m sure the people here who are unfamiliar with this process will appreciate your insight in the comment section.

1. Setting Up The Blog

For my niche site challenge, I’ll be using a WordPress blog with a domain and hosting from Bluehost.com.

In the past, niche sites were almost always static sites, and blogs were just a way to keep your friends informed about the shenanigans from last weekend’s party. They weren’t given much in terms of priority and ranking in Google’s search engine algorithm.

Now, as I’m sure you’ll know, blogs can rank high – really high.

little blue book of advertisingAs I was cleaning the house today, I found a book that I had purchased a couple of years ago, called The Little Blue Book of Advertising: 52 Small Ideas That Can Make a Big Difference.

I don’t really know why I had purchased it. I was still working my 9 to 5 job, and it’s a book that’s mainly geared toward those in advertising.

I was in architecture.

Sadly, I never had the chance to read it, but when I was flipping through the pages today, I randomly opened up to page 205, which was a chapter entitled: 43. Blogs – Still Lots of Learning to be Done.

Since I have a blog, I was interested and read on. Click to continue…
