passive incomeMy security guard training niche site from the Niche Site Duel has been sitting at number one in Google for a little over 2 months now. As January comes to an end, I’ve already passed the $400 mark in revenue for the month (from Google Adsense) – a 275% increase from December, and there are still 5 days left to go.

This drastic increase in earnings actually caught me by surprise – so I decided to do a little investigating to see where this extra income was coming from.

What I found out surprised me even more. Click to continue…

How to Create a Facebook PageOne of the most popular blog posts I’ve ever written was THE Blogger’s Guide to Facebook. It has been viewed over 20,000 times and the videos within that post have accumulated over 120,000 views.

Unfortunately, those videos are now outdated. Facebook, as many of you know, loves to update and change things around – so my walkthroughs for creating a Facebook page and creating a Facebook landing page are a bit off.

Several people have requested that I reshoot these videos and publish updated versions.

I just finished, and here they are! Click to continue…

Autoresponder SeriesIt might seem like a weird time of the year to write about autoresponder email messages, especially with everyone else talking about their goals for 2011 and what they hope to accomplish come the new year. But in my case, I feel it’s appropriate because it’s been exactly one year since I introduced my own newsletter and autoresponder series for the Smart Passive Income Blog. One year since I began building an email list.

As many of you know, at the same time I also introduced my free eBook, eBooks the Smart Way, as a “lead magnet” (that’s what the pros call it) to hopefully entice people to sign up, and as I usually do with everything else I’ve got my hands in, I’m happy to share my results with you. Missing IngredientI can’t believe the Holiday went by so fast and 2011 is just around the corner! I’m still settling back into the routine of things (and digesting) before I come back from “break” on Wednesday, but I wanted to share this short but powerful guest post by someone who I’m very fortunate enough to call a friend in the Blogging World, someone successful who I really look up to – David Risely of DavidRisley.com. We recently met at Blog World Expo and I am confident when I say he’s one of the nicest and smartest guys in this business.

Here, David talks about a missing ingredient that most bloggers (including myself at times) miss or forget when trying to build our lists and grow our email subscriber count.

Enjoy!

I’ve talked many times about the importance of list building (and so has pretty much everybody else). The most common way to entice people to get onto the list is to give something away. Usually a free e-book.

However, there is a vital element in offering that free ebook that most bloggers just miss entirely, and it is costing them subscribers like crazy. Not doing this one thing will lead these unfortunate bloggers to think nobody wants their free e-book, when that isn’t always true. Click to continue…

Become Remarkable“The key to getting started down the right path of being remarkable in anything is to simply act with the intention of being remarkable.”

This is a quote by Chad Fowler, CTO of InfoEther, in Tim Ferriss’s new book, The 4-Hour Body. Tim highlights Chad because after being obese for over a decade, he lost 70 pounds in less than a year, which is truly remarkable.

Although the parts of the book I’ve read so far are mainly about achieving extraordinary and amazing results with our bodies (like rapid weight loss, superhuman strength, holding our breath for 5 minutes, etc.) there are a lot of wonderful gems, like the quote above, which can be applied to other things in our lives, like our businesses and blogs. How to Love Your Readers to DeathWhen I was at Blog World Expo a couple of months ago, I was lucky enough to sit in on a presentation by Darren Rowse of Problogger.net. During the session he explained that one of the vital keys of successful blogging is to “love your readers to death”.

I thought this was a fantastic way to summarize the ideal relationship between a blogger and his or her audience because if you take care of your people, your people will take care of you.

I think we all have an idea of what it means to love your readers to death, but really how does one do so?

Here’s my quick take. Click to continue…

When I first started learning how to drive, my Dad gave me a piece of advice to help me stay safe on the road and become a good driver:

“Drive like everyone else on the road is crazy”, he said.

Drive Like They're Crazy. Blog Like They're Lazy.Although I know there are mostly safe drivers on the road (unlike this guy), by adopting this mindset I learned how to stay alert and be aware of other vehicles on the road next to me.

Thanks Dad!

Now, here’s a piece of advice I’m going to give you to help you think about how to become a better blogger:

“Blog like everyone else is lazy.” Click to continue…

In the past month, I’ve experienced some record traffic numbers for The Smart Passive Income Blog, as you can see below:

SPI Traffic Report - Overall

There are two notable differences from the previous month that I’d like to point out:

  • Visits and Pageviews are up 24%
  • Avg. Time on Site has increased by 30 seconds

Most of the other metrics are the same, but the two highlighted above are huge differences.

So what accounted for this explosive growth and stickiness?

In my last traffic report I also showed record numbers, but I credited that growth mainly to my Podcast and YouTube Videos.

This time, however, the majority of growth wasn’t a result of something I did outside of the blog – it was from something that came from within: a single blog post. Click to continue…

I get asked a lot of the same exact questions over and over again: how do I setup a blog, how do I setup a newsletter, where did I get my blog theme (it was custom built), and what wordpress plugins do I use.

Hmm…maybe I should setup my own blogging course or something.

Anyways, I’ve never really listed the WordPress plugins that I use, so here it is. 25 of my favorite WordPress plugins – some you probably know, and some you probably don’t.

The Essentials

Here is a list of WordPress plugins that all WordPress blogs should have, no matter what the topic of discussion is: Click to continue…

How I Built My Business With No Money to SpendThis is a guest post by Paul Cunningham of BloggingTeacher.com.

In 2008 I was standing at a cross roads in my journey as an online entrepreneur. My wife and I had one child already and a second one on the way. We were also getting ready to sell our apartment and move into the new family home that we were building.

To say money was tight would be an understatement. We were literally counting our money to the last dollar and starting to make a list of people we could stay with if the new house wasn’t ready in time.

Meanwhile, I was working on my blogs outside of my day job hours and trying to build them into a viable online business. I knew I needed to do it without spending a single dollar of our savings, but my blogs weren’t making any money yet. Click to continue…
