Part of my responsibility here on SPI is to not only give you the best information possible, but to nudge you to take action as well.
One of the ways I love to do that is through my reader challenges, where I challenge you to do something specific that I know will help you and your online business.
Here’s a list of all of the previous reader challenge results posts:
- The Pillar Article Reader Challenge
- The List Post Reader Challenge
- The YouTube Video Reader Challenge
- The Mini-Product Reader Challenge
- The Tell-a-Story Reader Challenge
In the last challenge, I asked you to conduct a case study, which involved two major tasks:
- Try something new.
- Report your findings.
Case studies have been the backbone of content here on the Smart Passive Income Blog (and are typically the most traffic-heavy and sharable posts), and each time I try something new, whether the outcome is a win or a loss – the findings are always helpful to the readers.
The most popular case study I’ve published was the Niche Site Duel series, an experiment that included publicly building a website from scratch, climbing it to #1 in Google for my target keyword and earning a couple thousand dollars per month. This case study was made up of about 20 posts, each one comprising of its own little case study (one little part in the overall process), and has driven a ton of traffic to blog.
Of course, it helped that the site did really well, but the series has become so popular that the [exact match] term “niche site duel” is searched for globally hundreds of times per month.
I knew this reader challenge would be a little more difficult for people since it takes a little more work than just simply crafting a blog post, so I’m not surprised that there are less submissions than usual. That said, I’m a little disappointed there weren’t more submissions.
During the next challenge (which is mentioned at the bottom of this post) I’ll do a better job of highlighting the challenge and reminding you before the deadline.
For those that did take the challenge and opportunity, I’m really excited to share their results below.

The Next Reader Challenge: An Interview
Interviews are an extremely powerful form of content – not only for you as the interviewer, but for those who will be watching, listening or reading the interview as well.
As I mentioned in a post last week, Top 10 Tips for Conducting an Exceptional Interview:
- You can generate unique and refreshing content for your audience. You don’t need to be the expert to deliver expert advice.
- It can raise your level of authority simply because of the public association that you have with the interviewee.
- You build a relationship with the person you are interviewing which could possibly lead to other growth opportunities for you and your brand down the road.
Your next challenge (and I really hope you take it) is to conduct an interview with someone related to your niche or industry. Someone whose knowledge would benefit you and your audience.
The interview can be conducted in any medium you choose – audio, video or text – but I encourage you to expand beyond text and try an audio or video interview, if possible.
And make sure to read Top 10 Tips for Conducting an Exceptional Interview for some quick tips.
If you’re scared about asking someone for an interview – don’t be! What’s the worse that can happen?
They say no.
No biggie – not everyone will say yes, but don’t worry about it. Plus, you’ll never know until you ask.
So that’s it! All you have to do is conduct an interview and share it with your audience.
I’m giving you until the end of May 2012 to complete this challenge.
Bookmark this post, and send me an email with a link to your case study through my Contact Page and make sure you write READER CHALLENGE in the SUBJECT so that I can catch it and include it in the next roundup post.
As always, I’ll randomly select 3 participants who will each receive a $50.00 Amazon.com gift card.
Thanks again to all of the participants in all of the reader challenges so far, and I hope there will be even more this next time around.
So who is in? Let me know below and hold yourself accountable for it.
Cheers, and please feel free to share this post and help out all of the participants!

I am up for the challenge Pat!
me too Pat,
I was thinking to post an interview post on my most popular software testing blog but didn’t took it seriously.
Now I have some inspiration and surely this will help me to ask some expert in my niche for the interview..
Thanks,
Vijay
I’m in like Flynn!
Okay, I’m in! I wanna do interviews since a long time…
I’ll do it! Sounds like fun
Thanks Pat!
Ok Pat you got me I’m in. I was actually thinking of a series so this will be a good start.
Thanks for creating this challenge.
Dan
I’m in too. Just because i can’t let Dan do this competition alone. Someone has to hold his had so i volunteer.
I’m in for the challenge. I mailed some people few days ago for interview only 1 person agreed to do it but its going to be a text interview. I don’t have the resources to cater for an audio or video interview now – I love quality
Sheyi
I know I’m late to the party, but I’m with you. Mine is also going to be a text interview since I can’t do audio (no idea how…) or video (webcam quality is lousy!!!) I actually have 5 interviews lined up though.
Sheyi – don’t give up. I find that making connections with them first lets you have a higher chance of being accepted. I guest posted on one of theirs, emailed 3 of them, and one of them I am active on her blog.
I do interviews with very busy experts for an industry specific authority site I run, and I get a much better response rate by requesting an audio interview first(obviously), but I also include the questions in the same email and offer them the option to just write in their responses if they don’t have time or don’t want to do an audio interview.
That might help some people out- Awesome challenge Pat I’m excited to see the results.
Awesome. I am thankful that my Adsense Case Study is featured here. I gonna focus on the execution in March and have a series of posts about my process and progress.
I love “Best Email Marketing Newsletter Design To Optimize Click Through Rate” a lot too as Personalized Note is what I do. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
I am in for the interview Challenge and gonna have a killing one too. Thanks!
That’s for hosting this reader challenger, and I’m definitely in for the next one!
Hey Pat, this is very relevant for me as this is exactly the model I have just started to use as a way to generate content,
I sent about 10 request out by email outlining what I’m doing, the problem being no body is responding to me? can you believe it!
It seems everyone is either shy, or think its some kind of sham, more especially as its in the wedding industry, which is massive… though being a male in a female world may also be a challenge
Hi Pat,
I am happy that you find my submission on the mistakes I made and why I failed my first Kickstarter project informative =)
Since my site is already built around interviewing successful Kickstarter project creators in video, so to step it up a notch and also something that I’ve been meaning to do but never got around to, I will set up my first ever podcast! (Will just convert my video interview into mp3).
One suggestion, may be there is too much time in between these challenges so there is no urgency for people. Would it be possible to make the time in between shorter?
I love your challenges and I want to take on more challenges from you! =)
Brian
Sounds like a great challenge. I accept and thanks for posting some great articles to read up on.
I”m doing a case study about work for my Monday and Wednesday post, so I’m in. I had sent out questions yesterday and got some great response.
Here’s my first case study: http://talesofwork.com/blog/2012/03/a-case-study-on-work-part-1/
Pat,
I’m on board for this challenge. In fact, your buddy, @DavidSitemanGarland, is about to launch an Interview Course. I plan on participating in that. So the challenge will be awesome practice.
This challenge was very enjoyable — and so was having mine starred and winning the gift card
I’m definitely in on the next one too. I actually really enjoy interviewing people and haven’t done much of it lately so this will be the kick I needed!
SWEET! I already invited another blogger in my niche who has a book coming out later this month to do an interview on my site. what an awesome coincidence! Looking forward to participating in my first challenge.
This is a great idea, I am on board!
Thanks for including my post in your roundup Pat and thank you for continuing to host such action provoking challenges.
Also thanks for taking time to interview me earlier today about my online businesses. I am looking forward to listening to our chat on the SPI podcast
Great stuff as always Pat – I think this one will be way easier for people to jump in on. Heck, I’ll jump in too
Interesting, Fridays is my day to work on expanding my business rather then in it, and look what I come across!
I’ve been wanting to interview people for a number of projects, but doing it ‘with the crowd’ sounds like a much better idea. I’ll gain tons of tips, gain ideas and perhaps even half my learning curve. I have the distinct advantage of having some high powered Marketing friends but I have almost zero Interviewing practice, so it’s all a level playing field.
Cool idea and I’m in it to win it!
Nice idea. I’m currently working on your previous challenge though. I have commissioned somebody to build a niche website for me, rather than build it myself.
I felt needed to put my money where my mouth was and show folk that a website can earn ~300% return on investment over 5 years whereas leaving the money on deposit can earn ~20% (or less).
I’ll blog about my experiences, with nice Excel charts showing the site’s income (should it actually earn some income!)…
You had me at hello.
I’ve been thinking about adding audio as a next step (though I hate the sound of my voice on audio) and thought an interview would be easier as at having another person to talk to will make it easier to get started.
So for me, perfect timing and I’m up for it!
cheers Pat & keep up the great work,
Alan
Hi Pat!
Thanks for the opportunity to participate in the CASE STUDY challenge. It was my first challenge here and a lot of fun to do.
Suppose I should go ahead and make myself accountable for this next challenge although I’m not sure if it’ll be audio, video or text. Would like all 3 as choices for my readers, but we’ll see.
Thanks for all of the helpful how-to’s to get this done!
Didn’t have time to create a good case study for this challenge. But I am up for the interviews – it actually goes along with my plans for this spring
Should we submit only one interview?
Hey Pat!,
I’m up for the interview challenge, I’ll send you the link in April… ;]
Nice one mate!…
Hi Pat – Somehow I missed getting in on the beginning of this challenge, but I’m in now. I will back track and catch up.
I am going to commit to doing a video series for my blog. I have chosen the topic and have started lining folks up.
I’ve done plenty of email-interviews but never an audio or video one. This is the first challenge that makes me slightly nervous. Pushing the boundaries of my comfort zone! I’m in!!!!
These case studies are great! Looks like my weekend reading is all filled up now. I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on these and start participating. What a great way to share information and inspired readers to take action.
I sent you an email Pat! I’m done!
Great challenge Pat, I am in. One of my goals for 2012 is to create a podcast and this is just the kick I needed to get moving on it.
You got it Pat. I’m in!
Woot for random selections! Thanks for the opportunity Pat! Lord willing, you can count me in on the next challenge as well. I haven’t ever done an interview before! I am so super stoked about this challenge!
Can’t wait to get started pat! One of my resolutions this year was to start a podcast. So far I’ve up to 5 episodes, and this challenge will help me reach out more to my community and bring them in for some interviews.
Love the Blog soo much Pat and I really hope I can participate in this challenge, so far I’ve only read your challenges and haven’t acted on them yet. I’m making it a goal of mine to put as much time as I can in to this one:)
Thanks!!
Pat, first off, love your site. Have been following for quite some time now. You mentioned being a little disappointed with the number of submissions. I have to tell you though several of the ones you posted interested me and I did click thru to them. Most of ‘em, I signed up for their newsletters. Please keep up the quality content (and thanks).
I’m in pat!
I’m am totally down for the challenge Pat! Count me in
I’ve never done any type of interview before, so this will be an excellent learning experience for me.
Hi Pat! Can I join the reader challenge now? Not quite sure if I need to start somewhere. I find your challenges interesting as it is very transparent and you see everybody doing it. Very encouraging!
I did not participate in the last challenge, but I think I will on this next one.
I just started a podcast and have been a little apprehensive about securing a guest and the technical challenges that may present.
Looking forward to seeing other people’s results too.
-Austin
I’ve never done an audio interview so I’m so in!
Wow so many people are in, looking forward to seeing the results!
I think this will be a great way to not only get some good content, but foster some realtionships within my niche as well.
Pat,
Some great reading links, some sites I read already but many I did not, so I will have some reading catching up to do. Thanks for the share.
I have so far joined and cheered others through this case studies, problem with small blog is many people do not want to interview you or do interview by you. I guess some of may wait and see how “content is king” route.
I really like this encouraging posts and reminder. Thanks for still keeping it real.
Would love to join the challenge! I’ve had some great success over the past month, so i’m keen to join in on this one!
very nice collection pat . thanks for the share
Okay I feel like I should get in on this. Looks like fun!
Pat,
I am a silent reader for quite sometime now. I have decided to take a plunge now and this sounds like a perfect opportunity.
I have a regd domain but yet to start writing full time. I am gonna do 10 posts and then post a interview with an expert that I will find before May.
Challenges always push me since I am proving a point ( atleast to myself ) and hold me accountable.
Thanks Pat for the reader challenge.
-Vickram.
I’ve been slacking. I haven’t done ANY of the challenges at all. HOWEVER, I am totally going to do this one. I have a podcast, so I do this often, but I think you’ve encouraged me to go bigger this time and try to interview someone that I’ve been wanting to reach out to for a while but is VERY famous.
Thanks for the nudge, Pat! We’ll see how it goes!
Are you sure all of those project listed above are worth mentioning
Thanks for the feature or my case study in this post Pat. It is much appreciated!
The idea of interviewing anyone terrifies me so I should probably do it. Yikes. Well, hopefully you’ll see me in the round up if my nerves don’t fail me.
My blog is in Portuguese, how can I participate?
Pat, with this reader challenge and the timing of it, you are converting me from lurker to participant. Thanks for the nudge. Now, back to work…..
I am in for the challenge. Sent my link in via the contact form.
I’m in.
Hi there, just became alert to your blog thru Google, and located that it is truly informative.
I’m gonna be careful for brussels. I’ll be grateful if you continue this in future. Numerous folks will probably be benefited from your writing. Cheers!
Oh, yes, I am in! Thanks for hosting this challenge and providing resources to help us hold a better interview. This is just what I needed right now!
My wife and I are in for our new site.
I’m looking forward to reading the entries from people who have websites that ARE NOT RELATED to WEB MARKETING! I want to read about the woman’s knitting success – not EVERYONE can have a “Internet Secrets” site… Just in general, I hate it when marketers interview other marketers, they’re just going in a circle. I also like the Niche Duel, because Pat uses a very real, everyday website that has an audience of real people, not just OTHER internet marketers. Happy Day!
I am up for the challenge Pat!
