Another Benefit of Passive Income – Muscles?

I remember the good ol’ days, back when I was in high school when I could eat cajun french fries with meat and cheese, and never gain a pound. I was playing soccer, a black belt in karate, in the marching band, and I was out playing flag football with my friends. I was in decent shape.

You can say I’ve thrown all of that out the window. It was pretty bad when I was working 9 to 5 because I never felt like I had time to go to the gym or “play” any more. Plus, it’s difficult to eat a good lunch when there are 10 fast food places right by your office. Now, it’s even worse.

Now that I’m working from home, I find that my eating habits are terrible, and I don’t even leave my desk most of the day because I’m working on new projects. This is not the passive income lifestyle I wanted.

A Realization

The other day, my friends called me up to throw the football around. They were telling me how I should get up from my desk every once and a while and hang out. It’s true that I’ve been glued to my computer screen and you could almost consider me a hermit this past month. So, I decided to join them.

After 5 minutes of running. I was dead. I couldn’t believe it! I, who was so used to running circles around my friends and opponents, felt dizzy and my arms and legs weren’t working like they used to. Unbelievable.

Then, I came to a realization: Why the heck am I sitting in front of the computer all day when I have the ability to do whatever it is that I want – because I’ve created Passive Income for myself.

I’ve been so engulfed in my work that I didn’t even realize what I could do for myself. I could spend more time with my fiancee and my friends. I could start to work out again. I could go fishing. These are all things I love to do, and I’ve been holding myself back from doing them.

Yes, I am working on more projects, so I could hopefully earn enough Passive Income for both my fiancee and I in the future. And, I can always improve on the Passive Income methods I currently have to maximize my income – true. But why not enjoy life while doing it? So that’s when I made a bold decision, to help me use my passive income to aid and design the kind of lifestyle I want.

My Bold Decision

I’ve decided to start a workout program. And not just any workout program, but a program that involves a personal trainer! (I’m so excited!)

Part of the lifestyle I want is to be able to be fit and strong, and hopefully look and feel better too. This decision to start this kind of workout program is made possible through the extra time and money that I’ve earned through my Passive Income Methods.

The best part is, I get to work with one of the the best trainers, since I can go in at any time during the day, again, because of my Passive Income.

The kicker is, I plan to keep this a secret from my fiancee. I don’t think she reads this blog often enough to notice that I started a workout plan. I’m hoping that she’ll notice the change for herself. Surprise!

My First Day

I signed up yesterday and had my first session today with my personal trainer, David.

He took my measurements and told me we’re going to keep track of the numbers each week. As you all probably know, this got me really excited – I love to keep track of numbers. Anyways, then we got right into it.

I thought it was going to be easy, but let me just say – after the 50 minute session, the rest of the gym’s staff was laughing at me because I couldn’t walk down the stairs without holding on to the handrail for dear life. That’s exactly how I wanted it (except for the laughing part, but that’s ok).

Since I know you love looking at numbers too, I’ll keep track of my stats here for you (and for me too):

  • Body Weight: 154.9 lbs.
  • Body Fat: 14%
  • Daily calorie intake: about 1500 calories (he recommends I intake 3000 good calories a day, yikes!)

I don’t know quite enough yet as to what else to keep track of. I’m learning a lot along the way, so just for fun, I’ll keep you posted.

He also gave me a nice list of foods I should be eating, and foods I should stay away from. Again, I’m in this for my strength and endurance and stuff like that, but I’m also in this to learn and be educated. David is doing an excellent job.

The Main Point

Step back from where you are and what you’re doing – and look at yourself. Are you doing what you want to do? Are you living how you want to live? Do you have the ability to do the things you want to do, and if so, why aren’t you doing those things? If you don’t have the ability to do the things you want, are you doing the things now to eventually get to that point?

I know that’s a lot to figure out, and you may not have an answer for yourself just yet. I’ll leave you with a quote, from me:

“You can do whatever it is you want to do. You just have to first, know what you want, and secondly, know how to get it. If you don’t know how to get it, find out how by doing research, reading, asking questions, taking initiative, asking more questions, and learning as much as you can.”

On your journey toward your desired lifestyle, many things will try and hold you back. Don’t let yourself be one of them.

I would love a personal trainer! But seriously, you have a good point here…earning passive income should indeed allow us more time and access to things like bettering our health. I have another point to add: I think that exercising and being more fit and healthy in general can lead to increased ability to earn passive income. I recently started running on a treadmill daily at 7 a.m. every morning. I’m not a big fan of running, but so far the benefits have extended beyond my health–while I’m running, I come up with lots of my ideas for my blog and other passive income projects. Also, the few hours after I exercise are the my most productive of the day. So I want to continue because the benefits are real. Good luck with your own goals!

    @ Sarah,

Very good point! I just started today, so I have yet to notice the overall effectiveness of my work as a result of my training. Now I’m even more excited! Keep running, because your work is excellent =)

I agree, you have the world in your hand and due to your passive income you can make the most of your time (the one resource you can’t actually get more of).

In September I started on a 4-day work week and it was a revelation. Time to prepare good food, exercise more and enjoy myself. Work asked if I could temporarily go back to 5 days a week and in the past two weeks I have eaten rubbish, not exercised as much and feel like I have no time whatsoever. I know which I’d rather have.

Thank you for your posts Pat. I can relate big time to the “ghost of fitness past” visiting me in the mirror every morning. And yet it is in the present that my gifts and inspirations always live. I can’t believe I am saying this, but I am beginning to finally own up to the fact that any resistance I have in any process is all my own “junk”, 99.9999% of it. It’s been a month since I worked on my blog. I’ve got to get out of my head and back to my passions.

Thanks again Pat. Your blog is inspiring me into action!

    @ Andy,

I totally feel for you. Isn’t it weird how just 1 “extra” or “free” day a week can make a huge difference in our lives? Even if the days were 25 hours instead of 24, I think life would be so much different, and easier. At least it’s not 23.

    @ Eric,

I’m glad I’m inspiring you to get into action! That is really what this blog is all about. I commend you on taking the first real big step in changing how you live your life and admitting that you have “junk” that shouldn’t be there (or you shouldn’t spend as much time on). Some people can’t even get past that step. Awesome, keep us updated on how your blog is doing and let us know when you’ve got some new posts!

Hi Pat! Just stopping in to say I’ve read your last five or six articles and I’ve really enjoyed them. Found you through a link at my network partner, The Digerati Life.

Sorry to hear about your layoff–well, not really, as it sounds like it was just the jump start you needed! No doubt this will end up being a positive for you, because as you put it, you’ve broke the chains. Look forward to your future posts.

I really enjoyed this post as I enjoy trying to maintain my fitness despite the demands of a 9 to 5. For me the best part of the post was the following line: “If you don’t have the ability to do the things you want, are you doing the things now to eventually get to that point?” If you are not putting in the effort to achieve what it is that you want, it will never happen. Very few people luck into doing what they want, except for those who discover luck through hard work.

I think I should look into getting a personal trainer…

I know what I need to do in order to stay in shape, it’s the kick in the butt I need on a daily basis to get me out there doing it!
