Steven is right here, there is a benefit in knowing a lot about it. I have a background in motor mechanics, steel fabrication and blacksmithing. Each time I have learnt something, I started knowing as much as possible of the basics then at a point I could oversee others doing the job. By building the websites by yourself, your observation changes perspective and you begin to know instinctively what is required. It is not all about money. You need to do your “ten thousand hours” so to speak.

I think there is a some benefit to doing some of the work yourself especially at the beginning because it helps understand the core of the business but ultimately finding someone to help you with other things is great because it allows you to concentrate in what we’re good and like doing in our day to day business.

Having people work for us or with us also helps keep everything organized and working smoothly. At times things can get busy and it may because hard to do a task but if someone else is getting paid for it and getting paid for it that’s one less thing to think about.

Hi Pat, I’m totally guilty of trying to do everything myself. However, I recently outsourced the more time consuming stuff like creating social media accounts for tools like onlywire. Would have taken me 3-4 hours but I was able to use that time more wisely. Worked out well and I would use elance.com again

I agree wholeheartedly with the post. I’m a graphic designer and photographer, so it’s hard to not do it all myself. In addition, the reality is that right now I can’t afford to hire anyone. I mean, really can not! (Quitting job and moving to france just before market crunch was tough, but it’s turning around.)

So, I have to do it all for now until I start making more money off my blog. I don’t really regret that I’m doing it this way as I enjoy it and I’ve learned a lot, but as an example, I just redesigned my site. Actually I chose a very well-designed theme, but it’s still a lot of work to switch. I’ve spent all week working on my site instead of posting or getting products to market, so I can really see how this isn’t a working model.

If you can afford it, get help! Although, words of wisdom. A friend of mine DID hire people to do the work through elance and she had nightmares of the work not getting done, the work not being very good – so in some ways, I ended up being ahead of her by doing the work myself. Be sure you are very clear what you want done and your time frame and look at their previous work. As a designer, I can warn you – just because someone can code, doesn’t make them a designer. If you need design, ask to see sites that they DESIGNED – not just coded.

Hey Pat,
definitely late in the game but I’m reading all posts (relevant to my endeavors) from the beginning and wanted to share an experience I just had. I’m like you (or the old you) and had to be in control of everything. However, yesterday, I let that go and hired a freelancer from elance to design a tutorial intro for me. I could have spent the 8 – 10 hours learning how to do a sub-bar version but for $80 I got, what I think, is a kick ass video intro. Should be up on my post in my most recent video tutorials in a day or two.

Hey Pat,

I beg to differ. Right now, I have no money to give anyone. At the same time I am drained, but I do know how to do everything. Writer/photog, layout.

Also, I have read traditional business owners had to pound the pavement themselves and do everything Then when success hits, they get people to do all the jobs they did as one person. You were not stupid to do everything yourself. It doesn’t matter that you lost $1800 initially. You got your money back triple!, Right!

When you start out, unless you have money to spare, getting someone to do the work, just ain’t gonna happen. Its all success to me!
