I was never a big fan of TV so I’ll keep it like that. Once in a while I’ll watch some TV when I have a few minutes between a thing or two or while I’m going something else that doesn’t require me to think a lot (like folding clothes).

I also closed my Facebook account a few weeks ago and I’m so glad I did that because it gave me a lot of time back.

I’m so much more productive now!

Yes! Pat, you are spot on with both of those points. Haven’t had cable television in the last 3-4 years and don’t miss it one bit. News today is largely negative press with extremely little positive content. Plus most of the content you would get on your tv already available online…without the commercials!

For me it’s the second monitor. I usually have it reserved for social media (of which I only use it for work so not an issue), but even just having a browser open makes me less productive, and can quickly find me “researching” something I’m writing. I read that you can write a post in about 20 minutes, but for me it is closer to an hour. (Ok it actually IS an hour) I can’t afford to get distracted!

Hi Pat,

Great blog btw.

I had the same addiction to news myself – reddit and drudgereport were my two biggest offenders.

One thing I found that reduces the need for self discipline in this area my friend wrote about on our blog here: http://www.becomeawesome.com/2009/10/26/how-to-increase-your-productivity-by-blocking-time-wasting-websites/

I did the above and cut it out of my life 6 months ago or so and I have no complaints about it anymore.

TV is definitely my addiction. With DVR though I can at least watch it when I want to and with no commercials. Although with pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training right around the corner, I’m sure I will be watching plenty of baseball. The good news is that I can be very productive while baseball is on in the background.

If you really don’t want to worsen a TV addiction then I recommend never watching 24. Jack Bauer is outstanding.
